Re: Thinkpad X230, fan is always spinning CPU temp skyrocketing.

which one would you suggest? it is going up when I open some programs, like 70 load 75 celsius, 80 load 90-95 celsius. I would check out the 4.19 kernel as it is default on other distros using newer kernels. 70-75 is on the high side unless you are running seriously heavy apps. Video editing, some ...

59 C is not bad really. I do wonder if a newer kernel might be worth trying.

Re: Good fathers teach their sons DIY skills

We fixed things ourselves because we couldn't afford not to :) Today it's even easier with youtube and the Internet, so really no excuse not to fix things yourself unless it would be unsafe or simply beyond average skill levels.

Re: What printer should I get?

I have a Brother laser printer and will never go back to inkjet. I hated buying those cartridges, and my laser printer never dries out. Brother has Linux drivers.

I'm not a fan of fragmentation either, but sometimes you are just happy to have a particular app on Linux, or an updated version of it available.

Re: Has anyone played around with MX Linux?

Yeah I hear ya MX Linux is a good choice for anyone just like Linux Mint Xfce and both being Xfce are pretty much the same from my experience although MX Linux being Debian its software packages are probably older than Linux Mint software packages. Those guys keep fairly new versions of certain app...

Re: Has anyone played around with MX Linux?

MX has one of the best communities on the Internet, going back to the days of SimplyMEPIS. I use it as well as Mint.
If you like Xfce you will like MX. It's configured nicely and MX Package Installer is quite handy. The installer is not bad and will be even better with next major release.

Re: Power Management not working

Myself, I will be going with Buster once it goes stable. It is Cinnamon 3.8 but ... meh. Everything works fine for me on test platforms. Well, everything but some minor MTP errors anyway. At least it will remain consistent so long as I keep people on buster. Just did a fresh install of Buster last ...

Re: Chrome

The problem with Andriod is Google took the Linux kernel and molested it so much that it doesn't resemble Linux in anyway by turning it into Spyware/Malware. Unfortunately Linux developers rather argue than to come out with a "REAL LINUX" distro that will work on any smart phone. That's something i...

Re: Chrome

This is one of those times I'd love to be able to claim clairvoyance or precognition. Last week, before trialing Debian 10 RC, I did something I should have done years ago: clean up and properly organize my bookmarks. The reason I did this was to prepare to reconstruct them, and the new organizatio...

Re: ...time for Linux Mint to go. Huh?

I have a headache now - thanks! :P I just don't understand the attacks on Mint lately. Mint is NOT just a showcase for Cinnamon; that argument doesn't hold water. To me, Mint is a better version of Ubuntu. I run XFCE, and Mint's implementation blows away Xubuntu (and every other XFCE spin I've trie...

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad A475 and Linux Mint ....

Why not get new 'secondhand' and get a T series laptop. There are a lot of ex-corporate thinkpads around at great prices and they play well with linux. That would be my advice, with intel hardware. The X series 220/230 are nice if you want something smaller. The only Thinkpad Iv'e ever not loved is...

I would do some serious Google searches and make sure that both the AMD and the Radion video play well with Linux.

Re: Are most Linux Distros easily broken? Your advice please.

Starting with Linux friendly hardware helps to make it unbreakable. I generally avoid anything nvidia or AMD. Usually intel hardware is a good bet. Debian Stable is one of the least breakable Linux operating systems. Next to that would be Ubuntu long term support releases--which includes Mint as it ...

I don't see how you can use Windows 8, that interface is a nightmare. I upgraded my wife's Windows 8 computer to Windows 10 so she would at least have a sane interface :) Writing is not an issue on Linux, unless you absolutely must use Microsoft Office. LibreOffice is pretty good but I use Softmaker...
