Re: LMDE main focus?

You can install the 5.6 kernel on LMDE through Debian Backports.

Re: Help me find <$600 laptop with these features

Reddit SuggestALaptop is going to give a lot more feedback.
As for me, I'd avoid AMD and stick to intel with onboard graphics, no Nvidia. Go for a used laptop 2-3 years old with best specs, ram, larger ssd. Lenovo Thinkpads are generally good.

Re: Trying To Install Xiphos on LMDE 4

I just installed Xiphos and some modules and it is working here on LMDE4. It scrolls fine.
I'm wondering if you have a video driver issue or perhaps are using a small screen that is interfering with scrolling.

Re: Trying To Install Xiphos on LMDE 4

I think I had to install Bible Time and Xiphos together for awhile there. Seems like I needed both to get Xiphos working properly, they share some software libraries or something. Can't hurt to try installing Bible Time and see if that fixes Xiphos for you. Edit: also, you probably already know it, ...

Re: Clem Lefebvre interview

I agree, for the same reasons and potential scenarios but you'll always get the minority of folk moaning about LMDE being out of date all the time because they didn't read what it really is before using it. I also like the lack of PPA support but it won't sit well with some. So it's probably best t...

Re: Clem Lefebvre interview

Good interview. I wish Clem did not play down LMDE so much though. Too often LMDE is made to sound both difficult to use and not as stable as Main Mint. I allow it takes a tiny bit more to install and set up, but not much. And once that is done you are not going to have to worry about it breaking un...

Re: Can't trust the cloud.

If you don't use the cloud for back up, you better have an off-site back up somewhere. God forbid, a fire or some natural catastrophe hits your home and you lose all your data. I use several online back up sources for redundancy, plus keep a hard drive with my content on it as a portable drive. Fina...

Re: LMDE main focus?

Yep, reason I went with 5.4 on my machines is because I won't need to change them again in the lifetime of my machines. They are both already over 5 years old (desktop is coming up for 6) but may last a few more if not all 5 years of kernel 5.4 LTS lifespan with the usual care and maintenance. I do...

Re: LMDE main focus?

Just to add, I'm using a 5.6 kernel on LMDE 4 because it better suits my hardware. Backports are an often overlooked option when using a Debian Stable base when it comes to needing a newer kernel or updated apps. New Mint 20 is only running a 5.4 Linux kernel.

Re: LMDE 3 is no longer supported

Unfortunate. Will probably start over with a clean install of Mint 20 when I have the time for it, bye LMDE. :-( I did the mintupgrade stuff from LMDE2 -which was supported for quite a long time- to LMDE3, but I don't want to do this in a ~2-year cycle. Debian 10 EOL is planned for 01/2022, so prob...

Re: MATE on LMDE4

Now the Ubuntu based Mint versions will only be released as 64 bit, it would be great if the team would consider to bring back LMDE MATE and make a LMDE Xfce edition too. :) Maybe if/when Mint goes full Debian down the road it will offer the three options on Debian just like it does right now with ...

MATE on LMDE4

Cinnamon is nice, but if you would like the option to log into MATE, this gave me the full MATE desktop in all its Minty goodness:

sudo apt install mate-desktop-environment-extras

Just choose MATE from the little icon at the top of your login menu in the drop down choices.

Re: How is Mint 20 Compared to Mint 19?

I spent the most time trying out Mint Cinnamon 20 beta. I like it much better than Mint 19. Was faster, and booted quicker for me than 19. It will be a nice upgrade from Mint 19.

Re: LMDE main focus?

I think the time will come when Ubuntu becomes so difficult to build upon without an endless amount of work that Mint will go full Debian. I once thought it would be some huge, dumb move on Ubuntu's part that would force the change, but now I suspect it will be a "thousand small cuts" that...

Re: LibreOffice 7.0

LibreOffice really needs to get a version history for Writer, and automatically setup back up of files instead of depending upon users to find the setting. LO could be awesome with some common sense default settings and options.
