Re: [MS Office] best way to run this windows suite in Linux Mint?

May be worth trying Softmaker Office. They have a free version, but to use docx and other newer Windows file formats there is a paid version for Linux. Worth looking at:

It should be opt in instead of opt out.
I suspect Ubuntu wants the user data--perhaps for a future sale?

Re: Anyone else tired of reddit?

Exactly. It's huge and parallels the net as a whole. Just because there place onlines that I'd never go and hate - I wouldn't go "oh I tried the internet and people were mean and awful" so I don't use it. You just go to the places that are ones you like. I'm very fond of reddit myself, but I go to ...

Re: Anyone else tired of reddit?

There is not just one Reddit. There is the front page which places sub-reddits you subscribe to in your feed. Some sub-reddits are decent, even useful. A few I like: r/thinkpad, r/television, r/cordcutters, r/linux. Some are support sub-reddits not much different than regular forums like this one. O...

Re: Do Lenovo ThinkPads run well with Linux Mint?

@ KBD47-- "...What kind of temps do you get running Cinnamon?..." With 8 GB in both (Cinnamon) machines, inxi reports 37C on the T420 running LM 17.3, and 42C on the T430 running LM 18.2. Have had nothing but exemplary performance from these two Thinkpads. Will buy another one (T420/T430)--or two. ...

Re: Lightweight distros for old computers

1 gig mobo limit? My netbook runs 18.1 xfce with 1.6 atom and 512 ram. 1 gig is only upgrade path for it. If i remember right alot of preconfig systems were the same back then. Adding some swap might speed it up a bit. I would max that out to 1gb ram. It will add usable life to it and make your lif...

Re: Firefox 57 - Quantum

I was very disappointed with the new AdBlock Plus (the interface, the lack of control, etc.). And, the "Element Hiding Helper", which I use heavily, is now (apparently) incorporated inside AdBlock Plus, and, I believe, much more difficult to use. I went on the AdBlock forums to express my amazement...

Re: Firefox 57 - Quantum

Finally got to try Firefox 57 on Linux Mint Xfce 18.2 tonight and no issues whatsoever. Ublock Origin, Https Everywhere, Privacy Badger extensions all work and needed no action on my part. In Windows 10 I had to re-add Https Everywhere extension to FF57 and did not in Linux. Firefox is much faster, ...

Re: Firefox 57 - Quantum

2 x faster and 30% less memory, Sounds like an impressive update. Haven't tried it on Linux yet, but on Windows 10 it is excellent. Faster and I think it looks better, more like older Firefox to me which I like. Ublock Origin and Privacy Badger add ons were no problem, carried right over. I did hav...

Re: Upgrade to 18.2 or wait until 18.3?

If you don't have any special reason to upgrade, I would just stay with 18.1. I still use it and have no plans to change it unless perhaps I'm forced to reinstall for some reason but even then I would consider still using 18.1 - not sure. Maybe the "buggy" you were referring to was referring to the...

Re: New Slax will be released next week as a Debian Base.

Years ago I would install just about any kind of Linux. But after seeing developers abandon projects, and too little support for some projects, I stick to the bigger distros for the most part now. Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, the only exception is MX Linux, but those guys have been around for...

Re: No useable alternatives to MS Office?

I downloaded the free version of Softmaker the other day and today they offered me the standard version for $9.99 so I bought it for being able to use current MS file formats like docx. I'll probably still use Libreoffice the most as I've been using it for years and it works for most of my needs, b...

Re: End of KDE

I started using Linux with a KDE desktop. These days I mostly use Xfce. The old KDE MEPIS group mostly uses Xfce now, many were previously fans of KDE and migrated to Xfce. Might be worth giving Linux Mint Xfce a shot before moving to something else.

Thing is you can do everything right and only use Linux and some dumb company like Equifax will spread your info all over the net because of lame security.
