Re: System Monitor launches minimised to the Panel

Seems it's a problem with encrypted disks and LVM. Mint 18.2 XFCE – Encrypted disk using LVM – Secure Boot off and UEFI off. System Monitor and Synaptic Packet Manager work fine, as expected. Mint 18.2 Mate – Secure Boot and UEFI on – disk encrypted as above - System Monitor and Synaptic Packet Mana...

Re: System Monitor launches minimised to the Panel

I already tried that. No error messages and both applications just open to a un-maximisable icon in the panel... Update - it now seems thare are error messages. (Strange!) gordon@gordon-ThinkPad-X230 ~ $ synaptic-pkexec (synaptic:9718): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_hide: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (wid...

System Monitor launches minimised to the Panel

Running Linux Mint 18.2 with Mate.
When I double-click on the System Monitor application, all it does is put an icon in the Panel - I can't actually get it to open so I can use it.
How do I fix this?

Update - Synaptic is doing the same thing.

Re: General laptop hardware question

Thanks for all the responses - I've sort of done some lateral thinking and changed from Cinnamon to xfce, which seems to be far less of a memory hog. With the same apps and web tabs open (Firefox not Chromium) I'm only using 50% of RAM....

Re: General laptop hardware question

Thanks for that - the thing is, my system is usually up at around 90% RAM usage, with 11 Chromium tabs open, Thunderbird and LO running. Is this normal?
Update - I'm on Cinnamon 18.1

General laptop hardware question

Hi,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad i5 with 4GB RAM and a 320GB HDD running Mint 18.2
My question is, if you could only afford to upgrade one component, would it be RAM or HDD>SSD?

How to change frequency WiFi connects on

I have a BT Homehub 4 that provides both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wifi bands.
I'm trying to get one particular device to connect to the 5Ghz band but I can't see any way to do this in WiFi settings.
Can I do this, and if so how?

[Solved] HP printer install doesn't find HPLIP

Having trouble with my HP Photosmart 5525 that worked perfectly OK up to a couple of days ago. (The printer's fine - it's the connection that's a problem). On trying to re-install, it doesn't give the option of HPLIP as the connection - only IPP which doesn't work. The HPLIP module is installed. LM ...
