Networking n00b, goal for home printer server

I am still a bit of a green horn when it comes to configuring networks and such, but here is what I would like to set up: First, connected directly via LAN cable to my wireless router (to avoid any wireless issues) will be an old(er) pentium box running mint. Connected to this computer will be the p...

Not to be mean, but this thread is long since dead, and you are trying to hijack it at that. Please start a new one. People will help you.

Re: Remote desktop, not sure where/how to begin.

That is exactly what I was looking for, thank you very much. This is more of an experiment (read: for sh!ts and giggles). With that in mind, will the fact that the PC I wish to connect to remotely is connected wirelessly to a router affect the instructions on the link provided? And one final questio...

Remote desktop, not sure where/how to begin.

Here is what I would like to do: I have a PC at home that contains all my music, photos, documents et cetera and I would like to be able to access these remotely from my laptop away at school. The PC at home is a Linux Mint box (5.0) and is connected to a router. My laptop at school is a Windows Vis...

Re: Pen drive problem in mint

Best of luck to you! To avoid anything like this, I save every important document in 5 separate places. My main HDD, usb drive, I upload it via mint upload and email the link to myself with the file itself attached as well and then upload it to my FTP account. This way it is saved in two physical lo...

Re: MintUpdate DOwnload Hangs...

The plot thickens.... The ubuntu forum website is completely unavailable. See for yourself. Try to install a small program you don't currently have installed, perhaps hddtemp sudo apt-get install hddtemp You'll see it hangs and your download will not even begin. This leads me to believe Ubuntu is ha...

Re: MintUpdate DOwnload Hangs...

I've rebooted several times, and it still hangs on me. Is it a problem with the repositories? Mintupdate?

Any help would be appreciated.

MintUpdate DOwnload Hangs...

When I open MintUpdate to run in root mode, it takes a ridiculously long time to retrieve the list of updates, like on the order of 15 to 20 minutes. Then when I click install for the list of updates it hangs on the second file and says Download Rate: Unknown. It did this for half and hour last nigh...

Re: Help - Need a good mint/linux compatible MP3 player

Look into the Sansa Fuze by Sandisk. Mine is 8GB, sharp looking and works fine with Linux. Creating playlists was tricky to figure out, but the official sansa forums are very helpful and there are plenty of tutorials. On top of this, the firmware update for the fuse now has FLAC and OGG audio suppor...

Re: Multiple Issues - going back to xp

I tried installing the Ati drivers for my card, but it failed to recognize the card after rebooting. But it doesn't matter now that I'm going back to XP. If you are not going to even accept help, and are going back to Windows regardless of the help any one offers, why did you bother to post? Good d...

Re: HDD issues, what to do in future?

There is a long thread just for laptop harddrive, I suggest you read it, it covers many useful information. For each different laptop, the number might be different, you will need to try a few different setting. This is very complex issue, I don't believe it is easy to push a "general fix". Look at...

Re: HDD issues, what to do in future?

But yes - the "ugly fix" is ok (if you mean changing some parameters with hdparm) Ya, that what I was referring to, passing values of 254 and 128 et cetera. So if I implement this fix from the the moment I install my drive, I should hope to get more life out of my drive? On the other end of the spe...

HDD issues, what to do in future?

My laptop was affected by the load cycle issue that was a common problem with a lot of Ubuntu/Mint installs. I implemented the unofficial ugly fix, but I must not have acted in time as my HDD is near death and I'll be replacing it within a few days. I don't want to have the same problems again becau...

Re: Laptop Hard Drive

As a result of this load cycle issue, my HDD is at the point of imminent failure. It has failed the BIOS HDD self test and HP has instructed me to purchase a new disk. Funny that the warranty ran out a month ago  If I buy a new drive and install Mint, how likely is my drive will fail a year fo...

Re: How concerned should I be?

My laptop suffers from the load cycle count issue that has been gone over a thousand times with ubuntu. Was this issue with my HDD brought upon by me using Linux Mint? Would I be experiencing the same problems right now had I stuck with Windows? I don't want to point fingers yet, but if Linux Mint k...

All joking aside,
Mintupdate is a great tool and if you are not computer savy or would like to keep a stable system, as the others have said, avoid apt-update.

How concerned should I be? HDD Dying!

Lately the HDD on my HP dv2550se laptop has been making strange noises, so I know I should be worried, the question is, how much? Below is the output from sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda smartctl version 5.37 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforg...
