Re: SOLVED _ LM12 Standard Account - can't add search engine

Thanks for trying this out coolpup. I'd tried a dozen or so times, reinstalled firefox, removed noscript and ABP+ etc Turned out that the problem was that her FF account was in private browsing mode. Set to remember history and it worked first time! Seasons Greetings to all at Mint and Mint Forum :D

SOLVED _ LM12 Standard Account - can't add search engine

In my LM12 Administrator account it was straightforward to add Google search engine to Firefox. In my wife's Standard account it just doesn't seem to work - the 'Add Google' message doesn't appear in the drop-down after following the manage search engine instructions. Is this a known issue, or am I ...

Re: LMDE to Katya----old issues fade, new ones take place...

I had a machine that had problems with recent versions of Ubuntu, Mint (post Helena), and LMDE.

PCLinuxOS works well on it though.

Just a thought before you ditch Linux.

Re: Update Manager vs Synaptic Package Manager

Thank you for your help.

Since Mint 11 is working just fine without the level 4 and 5 upgrades I think I'll leave well alone!

[SOLVED] Update Manager vs Synaptic Package Manager

I keep Mint 11 fully up to date with Update manager, however if I go to Synaptic package manager there are a lot of things showing as 'Installed (upgradable), including some quite significant looking things such as linux kernel and xorg.

Do I need to/should I be applying those upgrades? :?:

Thanks

Re: Why can't my linux mint 11 find my wireless router?

Maybe a daft question - but is your router set up to broadcast its SSID name?

I have mine set up not to - and so I have to select 'Connect to Hidden Wireless Network' during set-up of wireless networking.

Re: Mint 11 dvd won't boot, Mint 8 dvd will

Well, I played around with a few driver updates, but the furthest I got was Mint 11 working with pnpacpi=off. I now have Mint 11 on both my systems, and it works flawlessly on my laptop (intel cards). Windows is still there, but i've not found a need to use it recently. Thanks to the Mint team for a...

LMDE needs acpi=off to boot

Hello. I've just installed LMDE (201109, gnome, 32bit) on an emachines e4062 (ATI Radeon xpress 200 video card). I can't get it to boot unless I configure grub with acpi=off. None of the other acpi debug options I know of works. The problem is that this stops one my two intel Pentium D processors fr...

Re: Mint 11 dvd won't boot, Mint 8 dvd will

Thanks very much. OK, nomodeset didn't work :( acpi=off got me logged in - but only one processor was apparently working and fan speed control wasn't working :!: pci=noacpi in grub has got both processors and fan speed control working. I'm not sure what else it might have affected, and whether it is...

Re: Mint 11 dvd won't boot, Mint 8 dvd will

Thanks for the input. Maybe I'm not following, but I think I got beyond that problem. nomodeset got my live cd running fine. I then installed to HDD. Now when I try to log in I get a screen freeze. Booting to recovery mode/low graphics is a workaround -but not a sensible one for the several users of...

Re: Mint 11 dvd won't boot, Mint 8 dvd will

Update - Mint 11 will run on the machine in recovery mode with low graphics selected - so it does appear to be a graphics problem as you thought The video card is ATI Radeon Xpress 200. I have run all the available updates in update manager - but the problem persists. Any thoughts on what I need to ...

Re: Mint 11 dvd won't boot, Mint 8 dvd will

Thanks - that has moved things along.

nomodeset acpi=off got the live dvd running fine, so after playing for a bit I installed to HDD.

Now I get to the login screen and the mouse and keyboard freeze, so I can't log in!

Further advice greatly appreciated.

Updating Firefox in Mint 8

I'm a new Linux user. I posted earlier that I can't get Mint 11 to load on this machine, but Mint 8 is fine. So, Mint 8 seems good to me, but I'm stuck with FF 3. Perhaps it's just my windows upbringing, but having an obsolete browser version worries me. I followed this guidance to try to update it....

Mint 11 dvd won't boot, Mint 8 dvd will

Hello, I am having a first play with linux. The machine I want to run it on is an emachines E4062, Intel Pentium D 805 2.66GHz twin processor. My first attempt was with the mint 11 live dvd. It starts to load, and I get the intro screen, but after the 'loading casper' messages I get a 'ready', then ...
