Re: Fan controller for Dell latitude D630?

Try pwmconfig. http://askubuntu.com/questions/22108/ho ... -fan-speed

It works here for me (but I don't have an OEM motherboard though).

Re: Mint 14 won't boot with new mainboard and CPU

Oh, that's strange...
Try uninstalling it and then reinstall it. I had the same problem as you when I switched from an OEM Asus motherboard to a Biostar mobo with the same chipset and integrated graphics.

Re: Mint 14 won't boot with new mainboard and CPU

The "nomodeset" setting is a temporary fix. You should either install the official Nvidia driver, or append nomodeset to the kernel line (Google it).

Re: Mint 14 won't boot with new mainboard and CPU

Looks like its happening due to a graphics driver conflict. Try booting with the option "nomodeset"
This shows how to do it easily: http://askubuntu.com/questions/38780/ho ... stallation

Re: How do all of you do updates - The procedure?

Easy and lazy way:
Terminal > sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Done. Don't need fancy shmancy Synaptic (mainly used by n00bs).

Re: Linux Mint user documentation

There already are tons of documents explaining how to do all those things you mentioned. A quick Google search and you'll find what you need. People need to actually put the effort to learn Linux--nobody here is paid to hold your hands throughout the journey, or wipe your butt for that matter. If pe...

Re: Faenza Style Mintupdate icons

I see these icons are in the .png format. SVG would be better because they are scalable and do not lose their quality as you resize them (bigger or smaller).
Inkscape can make SVG icons. Just a suggestion, that's all :P

p7zip is not the original http://7-zip.org/. and there'e a difference between compressing and archiving! Are you kidding me? Go do your research first before making a fool of yourself (this is the second time you've made a fool of yourself). Now, you should either not reply at all , or make an answ...

Re: Best Distro for Pentium 4 Processor

Mint Xfce is fine. Your pc can handle it. (If I were you though, I would install Debian Wheezy base, then install Xfce on top. Much more efficient than an Ubuntu based distro. With Debian, I'm getting 85MB idle RAM usage on my old Dell Optiplex GX260, 2.8GHz Pentium 4, 512MB RAM; for Ubuntu/Mint, it...

Can someone please Sticky this thread ?

That would be a big NO. You simply copy and pasted whatever was posted online and pasted it here. What is worse is you didn't even cite your sources!

Re: Please, something that just works!

Something that just works? That would be Debian Squeeze (but Wheezy is stable enough for daily use now). LMDE is not Debian--it's a mix of crap with snapshotted Debian packages resulting in a lot of breakages and issues. If you want to use Debian, use plain ol' original Debian, not LMDE. I'm a full-...

Press and hold the Shift key during bootup. You'll see the GRUB menu, then select the kernel you want to boot and press Enter.

Re: How to Install Java 7 (Script Inside)

Don't need galternatives. Go read the "update-alternatives" manual page, it's easy enough.

# update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/<program group, ex: /usr/bin/java)> <program group, ex: java> <location of executable, ex: /opt/java/...> <priority>

You wrote GRUB2 to the flashdrive instead of your harddrive.
