Re: Considerations before you install

Maybe a silly question, but I just partitioned like this on my 40 gig harddrive / -> 10000 /home -> 28000 /swap - 2000 Are there really compelling reasons to put my swap first? Apologies if this has been answered already before. I read this topic and read that partitions on the outside are faster th...

Re: Mp3 portable player problem

Using VirtualBox I can access my Creative Zen with no problems. Only problem is that, for some reason, I cannot read the preconfigured directory structure (Zen comes with folders for Music, Video, Pictures and Podcasts). I can only access the root folder. Anybody else have this problem? This is the ...

Re: creative sound blaster audigy 2 not working

Do you have an onboard soundcard or an Audigy 2, or both? ...

Re: Guide to Linux Mint

Great idea! I hope you will find the time to complete this. A practical day-to-day guide is always a good thing. Just like the people at Foresight Linux did with their distro, Clem could include it in the start menu. That approach received a lot of praise in almost all reviews of Foresight I read.

Re: Is Linux at "MS-DOS" level?

You only have to "compile from source" if you choose to do so. 95% of all software you will ever need for day-to-day use is available in the repositories (a huge pool of software). Contrary to Windows though, where you need to know what you want to download and go to that respective website to downl...

Re: Love at first site!

I feel exactly the same way. At work, I am forced to use WinXP. I think it is a good OS (except for the way it looks by default, but de coloris et gustibus non disputandum est I suppose). However, I yearn every evening (yes, my private life is pathetic  ) to boot up my home pc and do the rest ...

Re: [Poll] Envy vs Restricted Manager

I used the RDM. Envy does not correctly install my Radeon 9600 Pro for some reason. However, I think this is a false dilemma as I believe it would be good to keep both possibilities of enabling 3D in Linux Mint. Any particular reason why you would want to get rid of either Envy or the RDM?

Re: Update function in Linux Mint for updating to next version?

Ok, so I reinstalled Mint last night, with separate /home partition, and got my virtualbox running Windows XP just the way I like it (with USB support etc.) However, if I were to install the new version of mint, those settings would be deleted, right? Or does Virtualbox keep its settings in a hidden...

Re: Mint Vs Ubuntu

For me, the main reason to switch to LinuxMint (which I did only 3 weeks ago) was that I was looking for a distro where the community was still rather small so that you can actually make a difference (in helping people on the forum etc.) In the Ubuntu forums, I felt like questions just got lost beca...

Re: Update function in Linux Mint for updating to next version?

Thanks to everybody for the suggestions. I will simply go with the separate /home partition as this seems to be advocated by most people in different forums.

Thanks again! This was very informative for me!

Re: Update function in Linux Mint for updating to next version?

mintUpdate will not upgrade to the next version. A tool for that will be included in version 6 - I don't think it will be ready in time for Elyssa As it is a LTS a fresh install could be useful - and if you have home on a separate partition, which is recommended, no extra backup is needed http://ww...

Update function in Linux Mint for updating to next version?

I was wondering whether the update functionality in Linux Mint will allow me to update to the next version (so no need to back-up everything, download ISO and re-install), or does it function more like Windows Update in that it only provides security updates to software?
