Cool, thanks for that.

Expect the new one was the Ubuntu default or something similar.

Default for 50unattended-upgrades in mint 18?

Hi Upgraded from 17.3 to 18 today using the instructions here: https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2316 One thing though, got prompted about a new /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades file. Difference between the old and new one is just one line. The new one has: // Automatically upgr...

Re: Update 7 broke my installation - best way to recover?

Thanks for the replies. In the end, faced with a reinstall, I downloaded OpenSUSE 12.3 KDE and am now using that. Fine for my limited needs and seems to work out of the box with my laptop, an HP 6730b. Maybe not so lightning fast but really not noticeable for what I do. I'm sure many other distros w...

Update 7 broke my installation - best way to recover?

Tried to install update 7 last night and it broke my installation. Can't start gnome. Essentially at command prompt. Networking fails to load - no network connection via cable let alone wireless. My laptop has 3 OSs - Windows Vista, LMDE and Scientific Linux 6 - so I have managed to backup my person...

Performance improvements after Update 5?

Does anyone else share my opinion that performance seems a bit better after Update 5? I do nothing cpu intensive but applications seem to be loading faster, whole interface seems snappier.

Using vanilla gnome 3 - no cinnamon.

Re: Fonts after upgrade

Just made a little script that makes all the missing symlinks (I hope I didn't miss any of them myself) and ran it as root. #!/bin/sh WHOAMI=`whoami` if [ x$WHOAMI != xroot ]; then echo Please run me as root. exit 1 fi cd /etc/fonts/conf.d ln -s ../conf.avail/10-antialias.conf 10-antialias.conf ln ...

Re: Fonts and terminal issues after update 5

Monsta's post here and the link in it might be useful. regarding the broken terminal, this is afaik the 2nd or 3rd post reporting that. can you please provide us the output of inxi -FGx Thanks, zerozero. Monsta's script to create the symlinks did the trick. For anyone else with the terminal issue, ...

Fonts and terminal issues after update 5

Hi Upgraded to Update 5 today and should have read the Update pack info but I guess I only got that after updating! What I failed to do was: Always choose "keep file" (as opposed to "install new version"). Anyhow, the font in Chromium is now awful and when I start a Terminal session it's black on bl...

Re: What does the lack of topics tell us?

If you want to see how these environments function beforehand you can always download the most recent LMDE ISO image (Cinnamon/MATE version) to see if you like them (Live CD or Virtual Machine). If you decide to stay with Gnome 3, you might check out some of the shell extensions that are available ...

What is on your laptop now??

Yes, I take your point. I am of course using a desktop manager now, Gnome 3. What I meant was that I just went with what came with Update Pack 4.

What does the lack of topics tell us?

I just applied Update Pack 4 and after removing compiz.desktop from ~/.config/autostart got Gnome 3 working. Have to say I haven't had time to keep up with all the changes, though I knew Gnome 3 was on its way. I then spotted the poll on the forum about desktops being used and saw that Gnome Shell &...

Re: Updated from pack 3 to 4, can only load Gnome fallback!

i would check 2 things: 1- were you using compiz before (in the gnome2 era) and was it in startup apps? if so, remove it from there, if you want cinnamon or gnome-shell you can't have compiz, that simple. 2- is your video card capable of handling 3D acceleration and are the drivers installed? witho...

Re: LMDE,Gnome 3 and other distros

the number of options available does tend to emphasize its enthusiasts' nature just as in the beginning of the micro revolution: S100 (original hobbyist micros), Apple, Commodore, Microsoft etc, when everyone was an enthusiast I guess what disappoints me is that the beginning of the micro revolutio...

Re: LMDE,Gnome 3 and other distros

Yup, I have no desire to distro-hop either, hence the attractions with a rolling release like LMDE or at least one that allows version updates without a total reinstall. A bit off-topic but I find the multitude of distros and desktop managers rather depressing. Just strikes me as making it less like...

LMDE,Gnome 3 and other distros

I've spent far too long over the last few days trying to decide which distro to install on my recently acquired but secondhand desktop as a dual boot with Windows 7. I use LMDE on my laptop and that was the first obvious choice for the desktop. I'd like a distro that can be updated without a complet...
