Re: How to play Plants vs Zombies in Mint?

if its a graphics card problem, you could try using a different (probably proprietary) drive...
just a thought.

Re: I lose my internet connection when I resume from sleep m

actually... come to think of it, there is something you could try:

Code: Select all

sudo service network restart
If you're lucky this might entail wpa_supplicant too.

Re: I lose my internet connection when I resume from sleep m

well put it this way... i could get no connection at all using the nm-applet (the nice icon in the bottom) while wpa_supplicant was dead... so i dunno.

still haven't figured out how to restart it - its not a service as far as i can tell.

Re: I lose my internet connection when I resume from sleep m

that means, it is dead... now you just need a way to restart it.

Sorry, I can't help there... but I'm sure someone knows how to restart wpa-supplicant

To make it run at startup: Create a bash script: #!/bin/bash xset -dpms;xset s off and save it to your desktop, as anti-phantom-screensaver.sh Give it executable permissions: chmod +x ~/Desktop/anti-phantom-screensaver.sh Move it to /etc/init.d/ mv ~/Desktop/anti-phantom-screensaver.sh /etc/init.d I...

Re: I lose my internet connection when I resume from sleep m

Could you somehow kill wpa-supplicant when you do that? I remember behavior similar to what you were describing after I manually killed it - it would not show any networks until after a reboot. Can't remember how to restart it (or for that matter what the actual process is) I *think* this code shoul...

Re: ventrilo for linux

@ katyanewb, you can check the 'man' file of any of these commands. Open a terminal and then type man command_name Oh, and the reason you can't find it in 'installed packages' is you built it from source - the package manager never got its hands on this, so doesn't even know it exists. To stick it i...

perhaps ubuntu is the most 'mac like' in terms of the amount it 'hides' from the user... could try that.

Personally - i prefer mint, because it offers more freedom and I find is easier to use... but thats just me.

Re: Finding sneaky fonts

If its not there and you're running a version of mint based on ubuntu, then:

check /etc/fonts/fonts.conf

it points to possible locations

Re: System crashes often, how do I find out why?

Seeing as the only errors you find pertain to nm-applet (its the front end for the network-manager) perhaps try disabling it for a session, then seeing if you can replicate your error. Note: This will remove the wifi icon in the bottom right. I'm not sure if it stops you connecting to the web sudo k...

IIRC you should get a window like this somewhere in the install:

Select the 'mount point' as / from the drop down menu for the correct partition.

Re: Password, default key etc. - Questions by Legionista

Assuming the user you are on is an admin root password is (according to my install, but not some others) to your admins password (assuming it su root)

However, you can just use "sudo" (without the quotes) before EVERY command instead if that is easier (again assuming you are on an admin account)

Re: do you surf the web anonymously?

I'm in a tangenty (another new word :D ) mood too. @ Point 1: yes to an extent, BUT you can use protocols like ssh that are *meant* to be safe - end to end encryption that can mask what you are doing in theory... @ Point 2: Too true - easiest way to keep safe: Don't browse :D On a more serious note....

Re: do you surf the web anonymously?

Hmm... I'm afraid of crossing over into actual 'hacking' if we continue down this path. One method would be to see which networks your neighbours are connected to... and if its yours then worry. The reason I mentioned the disconnect is if someone is trying to (but has not yet succeeded) in hacking i...

Re: do you surf the web anonymously?

Yeah - wireless can equal lag spikes, especially if you are sharing the connection with other people. Interesting side note: My mac manages to snag about 60% of the speed in a three way set up if all my computers are downloading, despite the fact one of the other computers is wired... it just seems ...

Re: Firefox 7 in Mint 9 xfce???

There's no harm in trying to... as far as I can see it *should* work...

All you are doing is adding a PPA, which should work across the different versions.

Re: Not able to open password protected word files

Just wondering, can you save it as a .doc instead of a .docx, and then see if it works? Also, can you open it in LibreOffice ? As for your second problem, it could be .doc files vs .docx files. See if the files that you can't open by default are actually set to open in word by default (right click t...

Re: Why do I have 5 partitions?

Well... at a guess, one would be for OSX, one (that you might not be able to see) is the hidden efi partition for OSX, one would be swap for linux, one would be linux, one might be a /home partition, and it is possible, that one could also be the original FAT-32 partition, as you could have chosen t...
