Re: Could be a threat to Linux (?)

Tip: Boot a liveCD/liveDVD/liveUSB then even if he messes the OS, it does nothing to the installed OS.

Re: Application (etc.) Icons Changed Recently!

Did you recently update your system? If so, it is possible that the settings changed. Go to

Settings -> Destop
Settings -> Appearance

and configure to your liking.

Re: mouse right-click-menu does not appear after suspend

I don't know how to fix your problem, but here're some ideas... If you know the command line to set the mouse/touchpad as default, you can put it into autostart file. For copy, I use ctrl-c. For paste, ctrl-p. For cut, ctrl-x. When you right-click, look at the menu and note the shortcut commands. Sh...

Re: standalone videophone

I'll answer my own question. I asked in the microsoft skype forum. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/skype/forum/skype_newsms/standalone-videophone/938f4318-c3e7-43b1-9317-bcd2cd224ad6 There is no recent skype-only videophone (don't want old technology and screen is too small). ---- note to my sib...

I would do a fresh install if you want to use XFCE. Overlaying desktops can be problematic.

Re: startxfce4.log.1 a huge file!!!

Can you do on a console

head startxfce4.log.1
tail startxfce4.log.1

for some clue(s)?

You can even use the -n option with head or tail. See the manpage, i.e.,

man head
man tail

Use SPM to add this library file.

menu
-> settings
-> synaptic package manager

enter your password.
wait for search bar to show up. (My slow computer takes 1/2 min)
enter libjavascriptcore
check one
click apply

standalone videophone [SOLVED: answer = no]

I am looking for standalone videophone for my Mom. The requirements are: - much be useable for computer illiterate. I.e., press one button to answer and one button to hang up. Even the address book is too complicated (no kidding: she is 93+ years old) - we kids will do the calling. Speed dial is a p...

Re: Linux Mint 18.2 Do not shut down

Get more clues. Open a terminal and type

sudo shutdown

and look at the output. If you want to save the output, redirect it.

sudo shutdown > shutdownoutput.txt

Post the output if you do not understand it.

Re: XFCE Menu Pop-Up / Random opening driving me NUTS

Boot from a live cd of the mint xfce. If its a hardware problem it will still be present. Agree. The other way is to use a different keyboard + mouse. You need to narrow the problem to whether you have a software or hardware problem. If you think LM is the problem, then try a liveCD of another dist...

Consider MXLinux. User-friendly but geeks are on their forums.

Re: Asus mini laptop

When I was using an eeePC 701 4G, I used MiniMe, crunchbang, and other lightweight distros. Right now it has wattOS (openbox version), but I do not use day-to-day. LM is too heavy for eeePC. Plus it needs too much disk space. If you insist on LM, use an antique version (and risk security problems - ...

Re: Synpatic Package Manager Won't launch after Update Manager repair

My experience, but don't know if it will work ... Whenever I redo something (reinstall, fix, update, etc), I may have to redo the panel icon. In other words, delete the panel application icons. And then, re-assign new panel applications icons via launcher. I.e., start -> ... wiggle to application .....

Re: why does the xfce desktop use 1.2 gb of memory?

On firefox, take a look at preference -> advanced -> network. You should be able to reduce FF footprint (it'll run slower) and clear offline web content. Also in preference -> privacy -> custom setting for history, you should be able to clear history and cookies. I agree w/ others - FF is a memory h...
