Re: Cannot update system or install new software

It's the Broadcom STA wireless driver that is causing the problems. I ended up reinstalling LM 13, updated software, updated kernel via Synaptic, and was able to install new programs as expected. When I tried to install the proprietary driver the machine crashed with same results as before. I will c...

Re: Cannot update system or install new software

No worky. When I open Synaptic, I get the following error message E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report. I open terminal, run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a'. The kernel shows as 3.2.0-23-generic. I get th...

New installation of LM 13, 64 bit, MATE. Previous LM and Ubuntu distros have worked fine on this machine. Installed and worked fine, updated software, etc. Tried to install proprietary driver, Broadcomm STA Wireless Driver. Got about halfway through this installation then my machine crashed to a ter...

Re: CD version LM 13

Thanks for the answer. I was just going by the information in the user guide, which says "Note: Linux Mint also provides images which fit on 700MB CDs. If you can't burn DVDs please use the CD images instead." Couldn't find the CD image on the site so I reached out to the forum. " I will update the ...

SOLVED CD version LM 13

Where can I find the CD download version of LM 13? User guide says it is available but all I can find is the DVD version. I have a bunch of 70MB blanks I'd like to use :-) and installing to an older machine that won't boot from USB.

Mate vs. Cinnamon

Hello world. I'm currently using Mint 11 Katya with the old Gnome 2.x desktop. Moving to LM 13 Maya to get on a long term support release. Call me a late adopter :) What are the advantages or disadvantages Mate vs Cinnamon. I'm not a power user. Tried OpenSuse with KDE once, didn't like the OS, DE, ...

Re: What exacty is Linux Mint KDE?

I have always been wondering what Linux mint KDE really is. I mean i know its a GUI but how come it looks so different compared to cinnamon and mate etc. The other version looked pretty much the same with a few differences but KDE looks completely different. I know you can for exmaple but Mate on a...

Re: [Solved] Uninstall Grub 2 dual boot Windows XP

So I can delete the non-Windows partitions, then expand the Windows partition to take up that space. That won't break Grub as my boot manager?

Re: Uninstall Grub 2 dual boot Windows XP

I booted into OpenSuse and set the default boot to Windows using the boot manager or whatever it's called. So instead of restoring MBR, Grub defaults to Windows now.

Re: Uninstall Grub 2 dual boot Windows XP

Umm.. why do you want to remove grub anyway? Just use grub to boot into windows. Set windows as default if you want. If someone can tell me how to set Windows as default I will mark the post solved :D Again, this is the family machine. Tried a dual boot with OpenSuse, want to default boot into Wind...

What about the Compiz desktop effects? Will it slow down my computer? Laptop is from when Vista first came out, or would be top line XP production machine at the time.

Getting more out of Mint

I am just beyond noob stage. Previously ran Unbuntu versions 8.04 - 10.04 on a dual boot with Vista. Death to Vista! I just repartitioned drive, deleted Vista partition, and added clean install of Mint 11. I like what I see so far, like Ubuntu only better. Question - how can I get more proficient wi...

Re: Uninstall Grub 2 dual boot Windows XP

Umm.. why do you want to remove grub anyway? Just use grub to boot into windows. Set windows as default if you want. But why spend time and effort replacing a good, graphical bootloader (grub) with a more limited and complex one (win's)? I want this particular machine XP only, no options to boot in...

[Solved] Uninstall Grub 2 dual boot Windows XP

In my zeal to try different Linux distros, I installed OpenSuse in a dual boot with XP. I want to delete OpenSuse and leave XP in place on this machine. It's a family computer and run fine otherwise. I've booted the machine in recovery mode and ran the FIXMBR command from the DOS prompt. I gives a m...

After all my scientific comparisons, I ended up going with Mint 11 as I really liked the background on the default desktop :D
