computer won't boot after update. (SOLVED)
{Apologies to anyone about to read this. No need. I just realised that I did something incredibly stupid, and the problem is solved. It had nothing to do with the update. I wish I could delete posts in this forum, so I've marked it as SOLVED instead. Sorry!!!!! --------------------------------------...

Re: [SOLVED] Dell Inspiron 3671 will not boot after kernel update.
MANY thanks for the help, everyone. As suggested, I managed to get into the GRUB menu and booted from the previous kernel. Mint fired up as normal. Then I used update manager to remove that latest kernel. Now all is working well again, and none of the trauma of a reinstall or data loss. I am SERIOUS...

Re: Dell Inspiron 3671 will not boot after kernel update.
Thanks for the reply, which contained no sarcasm or nastiness and therefore makes the you he NOT-gittiest person on the forum (If we're using 'git' in the same sense!) Unplugging, taking out the power cable, unplugging the (many) USB drives was the first (Ok, only) thing I've tried. Cos it's the onl...

[SOLVED] Dell Inspiron 3671 will not boot after kernel update.
About an hour ago, update manager flagged up a kernel update. All seemed to go well, and there was the usual 'restart as soon as possible message.' I restarted, and now my (Dell) PC won't go any further than the initial Dell logo that always appears when the machine is first turned on. I've tried se...

Re: Setting a default keyboard language?
I'm grateful for the replies, but I think they might be answering a different question to the one I asked. Perhaps I wasn't clear, so I'll try again. In my panel at the bottom of the screen, I have a keyboard icon - on booting up, it shows the UK flag. By clicking on it, I can then switch it to my o...

Setting a default keyboard language?
Hi - this isn't a big issue, but I was wondering if there was an easy solution. I have Mint 20.3 Cinnamon set up with English as the default language, and two keyboard layouts - English and Irish. Generally if I'm typing, I want the Irish keyboard, but I don't want to change the interface language t...

I've followed your helpful instructions - I'll give it a week or so and if the problem doesn't recur, I'll come back and mark this as solved.

Mint has started randomly freezing [SOLVED]
Hi - I'd appreciate any help on how to fix this (or even how to diagnose what might be happening. I've been running Linux Mint 20.2 very happily ever since it was released (fresh install, I THINK). Anyway, no problems until recently. I'm not aware of having installed anything or made any changes tha...

Re: Installing on new Dell XPS 8940
After a futile day spent on this, I'm honestly starting to think that this machine has been specifically designed to prevent people from installing another operating system! I've found a few web tutorials by people who seem to have managed to get Ubuntu or Mint on an XPS 8940, but all the processes ...

Installing on new Dell XPS 8940
Hi. I'd really appreciate any help with this. So far I've only installed Mint on old or home-made machines, but now I've got this new Dell. Ideally, I'd like dual-boot with the existing Windows, but if that's not feasible, I'm happy to go for a Linux-only installation. I managed to turn off EFI and ...

Re: Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition
If you tried to get Mint on the machine, I'd love to hear how it went. I'm about to try the same thing myself!
(Later edit, for anyone who's interested - I've just installed Mint 20 on the machine, and everything went perfectly with no issues.)

Re: How to get Irish accents on letters?
Thanks, Pjotr. The problem is that I'd already tried that, but instead of é I was getting a euro symbol. I've just found the solution in a REALLY old post on another site. It suggested that instead of those keyboards, I should use 'English(UK, extended, with WIN keys), and that seems to be working -...

How to get Irish accents on letters? (SOLVED)
I know this will sound like a tiny thing, but it's driving me crazy. I need to do a lot of typing in Irish. But I CANNOT find an easy way to get the accented lower-case e (é). I've tried reading other threads and watched a few vids, and I seem to be doing what they say - I can type á í ó ú with no p...

Thanks for trying to help, but internet connection is not the problem. I can use email, web browser, and software updates. It's only when I try to download applets or desklets that I get this problem.

Mint 19.1 - can't download applets or desklets
Hi, I'm completely out of my depth trying to solve this, and can't find any other posts related to the same problem. Any help would be appreciated. So, I go to applets or desklets settings and click 'download'. A box appears "Your cache is out of date. Would you like to update it now?" I c...

Re: Computer crash, no sound on reboot.
I've managed to get my sound back by adding the following lines to etc/pulse/default.pa set-card-profile 0 output:analog-stereo set-default-sink 1 set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-stereo set-default-sink 0 This gives me back my sound, which is great, but now I've lost the sound applet from my panel, a...
