Re: mint 16 cinnamon freezes

Ok. I can confirm the following: 1. It is not only YouTube. I have the same freezeup with other flash sites 2. So far, with me its only FF - never had it with Chrome, though I spend 99% of my time on FF. 3. I usually get a console via atrl+alt+F3. I tried killall firefox && sudo restart mdm but I ca...

Re: Cinnammon + G3 - please make it happen! (Clem, please!)

As of Cinnamon 2.0, more and more of the original GNOME dependencies have been circumvented. I understand that, but I would imagine that you can have two types of mutually exclusive dependencies co-existing on a single distro. After all, Mint is already bigger than a CD, so once we accept that this...

Cinnammon + G3 - please make it happen! (Clem, please!)

I have been using Linux Mint since M12 and I love it. And in the Mint community I have found a heaven of sanity like I suppose many other "Ubuntu refugees". Yet, something is really distressing me: I cannot have both Cinnamon and GNOME 3 on the same M15 machine. I realize that a lot of people hate G...

Re: Live-cd works, install has graphics issues, how do I fix

I fixed by own problem. Here is how: I forced X to create a xorg.conf file with the command "Xorg :1 -configure" which creates a /root/xorg.conf.new file. I then copied that file to /etc/X11, uninstalled the proprietary ATI driver, and rebooted. Now everything works. HTH somebody in the same situati...

Live-cd works, install has graphics issues, how do I fix it?

Hi, There is something really bizarre happening with Linux Mint 12 on two of my laptops: the live-CD works perfectly, the install goes well, but when I reboot I have problems with both the open source graphics driver and the proprietary ATI drivers. Rather than posting all the details about my hardw...

Re: More crazy stuff from Ubuntu - what will Mint do?

LOL, looks like I in the minority here. Maybe its my Debian background, go figure ;-)

anyway, thanks for the replies, though it would have been nice to know whether Mint will adopt this (seemingly popular) method.

Cheers everybody!

More crazy stuff from Ubuntu - what will Mint do?

Hi, I just came across this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/FAQ#Update_Manager_doesn.27t_prompt_for_security_updates This basically means that Ubuntu users will now have updates, shall we say, semi-automated by default. Yes, they still will have to press "install" but, no, no more sudo group p...

Re: Where can I read about how the backup tool works exactly

thanks, I saw that already, but does only address the how to make a first backup. it does not say how subsequent backups are handled.
thanks!

Where can I read about how the backup tool works exactly?

Hi, I am new to Mint and I tried the backup tool for the first time. Where can I get some details about how it works exactly? Does it do incremental backups? Does it check checksums before deciding to upgrade/replace file? Or does it use filenames only? What happens if a directory structure changes ...

Re: LM's intentions and philosophy: some questions

@tdockery97: first, thanks for your welcome. I have to tell you that while I really hate Unity, I have much less concerns about GNOME3, if only because the GNOME project, unlike Canonical, is responsive to the community as shown by the rapid pace of improvements made between GNOME3.0 and GNOME3.2. I...

LM's intentions and philosophy: some questions

Hi, Before I ask my questions, I would like to say a few short words of where I am coming from and why I ask these questions. I am one of the many Ubuntu-refugees which recently dumped Ubuntu in disgust and switched to Mint. Why? Well, the usual list of reasons. Bradely Kuhn does a superb job listin...
