Thanks to all those who tried to help.Unfortunately none of the drivers worked. I changed my webcam at the shop for the Trust WB-6250X, and it works out-of-the-box with Mint.
Now Cheese doesn't work, but I'll let it go for the meantime

I've got a new webcam and i can't get it to work under Mint (Elyssa). The manufacturer is "Silverline" and the Model is I CAM 830. It came with an installation disk that had drivers for Windows XP and for Linux. Under XP it works fine.Under Mint, nothing works - the LED doesn't light, Skype doesn't ...

(and you were right, I am using an on-board grphic card, and as far as I know it's an "intel extreme graphics" chipset

Now that Husse helped me get back to Mint after Mandriva's hostile taqkeover of the grub, I can continue trying to solve some problems.
