Re: Upgrade 15 to 16 partial failure

The problem most likely stems from the fact that you were using a OpenGL 3D login screen prior to upgrading. Once the upgrade took place, your machine downstepped to the FOSS drivers for your graphics display (which may have buggy or no support yet). Since you can get to a terminal or SSH in, you're...

Re: LM 14 to 15 in place upgrade - reads Ubuntu

Followed the same thread to do an in-place upgrade. It went smoothly as well ... but I've some left over cruft that's proving to be problematic to annoying: * I have no login sound (speaker test works; "Sound Effects" panel does not) ... * Menu is a mess - had 3 "bluetooth" icons, 3 "sound" icons, 2...

Re: BIOS doesn't recognize FAT32 USB Drive

I have Gigabyte P35C-DS3R motherboard and in its BIOS settings I have no options to set to USB in boot device priority, I can only boot from USB by hitting F12 or in Advanced bios settings to prioritize USB over HDD for one session - but that's it, now I can't, whereas I could before. Tried making ...

Re: MATE vs CINNAMON vs KDE

Just to give you an idea of my fossil here ... :D nForce4 mainboard, Athlon64 3200+, Radeon x1300, 1GB RAM Been dual booting between WinXP, and Mint Cinnamon across 12, 13, and now 14 and it was smooth going until 14. With 14 and 1.6, Cinnamon seems to be more sluggish, but it's probably because I h...

Re: Mint 14 no splash screen instead lots of text

The original OP has a wall of text?!? I consider that an improvement ... :) With Mint 14, my LCD always auto-configures itself on the Grub2 menu (Mint 13 always showed the menu in native 1440x900 60hz without my LCD doing that). Then upon hitting enter to boot to Mint, one of two things happen. I'll...

Re: Sizzling sound coming from PSU

Here's what I would recommend ... (1) If you're using any power-strips, replace them if possible. They wear out eventually. (2) Before turning on the computer, turn on some lights in the same room and go over to the breaker box. If your breakers aren't labled, you'll have to go reset them one by one...

[SOLVED] Re: Mint 11 LiveUSB Freezes Like Clockwork

Currently typing from a LiveUSB made from the Linux Mint 10 32-bit gnome iso with "hpet=force" added at boot time, and it's not freezing. In fact, the first time it booted, I botched the "radeon.nomodeset=0" command, and the display kept flickering. Rebooted, and botched it again. Just before the gn...

Re: Mint 11 LiveUSB Freezes Like Clockwork

No problem. I don't give up easily but I was pretty close to doing just that when Fedora froze on the powernow-k8 module and its CPU throttling governors. That's what led me to assume either Linux is using a governor that overclocks and throttles my system too much under load at boot up, and in thos...

Re: Mint 11 LiveUSB Freezes Like Clockwork

Currently typing this from Debian Squeeze LXDE LiveUSB ... but it isn't pretty ... This also kept freezing at detecting K8/Powernow and implementing automatic CPU throttling. To get around that freeze, I had to go into BIOS and manually configure my freakin' CPU (i.e. basically changing all "Auto" s...

Re: Mint 11 LiveUSB Freezes Like Clockwork

Minor update here -- on my dead Asus A8R-MVP, kernels 2.6.32.45 thru 2.6.39.4 worked fine and booted my hardware safely without issue (though I omit the 3.0 kernels as the board died before I had a chance to really test it thoroughly). Since the swap to this nForce4 board, I've been slowly letting i...

Re: Mint 11 LiveUSB Freezes Like Clockwork

I suspect serious regression. Tried my Kubuntu 11.10 LiveUSB on a nephew's nForce4 system based on a BioStar board, 2.4Ghz AMD Opteron, 1GB of DDR, and a Geforce 7800. Froze on the blue dotted Kubuntu screen. Swapped out the video card for a different Geforce 7800. Locked up at the same spot. Gonna ...

Re: Mint 11 LiveUSB Freezes Like Clockwork

Yeah, there's no way for me to provide any detailed information from dmesg or logs etc., unless I turn my USB stick into a no-frills Debian Squeeze LiveUSB that boots straight to terminal mode, but I think my freezing issue is related to other freezing issues that other people who get farther than m...

Re: Mint 11 LiveUSB Freezes Like Clockwork

Unplugged the USB controller - no change. Purged Mint off the LiveUSB. Used pendrivelinux to replace it with Kubuntu 11.10 LiveUSB. Within 20 seconds of clicking "Try Kubuntu" is looks like its gonna load the Live session desktop. Mouse icon is spinning, the USB led on the pendrive is flickering ......

Re: Unable to boot using Phoenix AwardBios

Hate to break it to you, but MSI was found in Taiwan way back in 1985 or so ... Then again - what do I know?!? I've only been building and fixing computers for a couple of decades ... :P Quick perusal through MSI's global site shows that the MS-7037 comes in three flavors ... (1) The 856GVM2-LS mode...

Re: Mint 11 LiveUSB Freezes Like Clockwork

The Ubuntu Natty LiveCD is a wash -- get the same "can't mount /dev/loop" error and kick to BusyBox. I actually let it idle at the (initramfs) prompt and used the head. Came back with another error on the screen regarding a read error on "virtual" something or other that seems to imply a sector erro...

Re: Mint 11 LiveUSB Freezes Like Clockwork

I've got plenty of space on that USB flash drive, and my issue with larger ones is depending on the machine used. It takes my fatty Playstation 2 and its 1.1 USB ports over 40 seconds to address that same 1GB flash drive while a lowly 128MB one is addressed instantly. Guess which one I use to transf...

Re: Unable to boot using Phoenix AwardBios

Before risking the BIOS to an unnecessary flash, make sure the USB stick is formatted using FAT/FAT16 instead of FAT32 prior to using either unetbootin or pendrivelinux. Machines with AwardBIOS 6.00PG have a bug that makes them choke on syslinux/isolinux on FAT32 formatted USB sticks, but usually bo...
