Thanks kato181 - point taken.
The original problem has now been solved -
- fstab cleaned up
- all original Windows partitions removed
- data moved to newer drives
- Swap moved
With some other tidying - System up in less than 50 secs

Re: Grub errors after old disks removed - solved ?
Hi
'lsblk -f' l;isting attached but I think I've found the main cause of delay.
I fixed the data partitions in /etc/fstab but forgot the 'swap partition' now moved to SSD.
A few more things to check (no longer need to cater for Windows dual-boot.
Thanks for your help

Re: Grub errors after old disks removed
Hi MiZog. Thanks for your reply. I thought I had covered this but I had missed 2 Windows-based partitions (neither used). It still takes 3+ minutes to load Mint. I had used 'gparted' to copy partitions (keeping UUIDs) from old drives. I have now found a systemd report (attachment - boot_1.png) - pos...

VirtualBox - Ubuntu or Oracle ?
Yesterday I found that I had a (non-fatal) problem using Virtualbox (VBox Guest Additions not loading correctly), and posted a query on the Oracle Forum https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=106678 the reply indicated that the Ubuntu (and therefore Mint) version was not supported and...

Thanks guys ! ajgreeny's "sudo chmod u+s /usr/sbin/hddtemp" got me user access to 'hddtemp'. However just putting hddtemp {dev) in .conkyrc now gave me full device description and temperature. (eg: / /dev/sda: WDC WD6400AAKS-22A7B2: 45°C But I can now write a simple python script to extrac...

[SOLVED] Conky and hddtemp
I have a feeling that this is an old chestnut that has come to haunt an 'old nut'. In the last week I have returned my main system to Linux Mint 20 - Xfce after 3-4 years cohabiting with Xubuntu. Most of the transfer has gone well and I'm enjoying getting back to LM. Many of the problems I've experi...

Re: New 18.3 installation not on Grub menu [solved]
Thanks that seemed to sort it out.

1. os-prober and grub-update do not list current root partition (ie sdf5)
2. I had assumed that the new install would be at the top of the list - it didn't - it came last
Anyhow all solved - thanks again

New 18.3 installation not on Grub menu [solved]
This morning I successfully upgraded to 18.3 using update-manager. However I was still having some minor problems. So I decided to create a clean installation and see if this made a difference. I downloaded and verified ISO and ran install. My current installation is on a Samsung SSD - sdf5. I insta...

Re: Dual-monitors stopped working.
[Following Morning] I switched on this morning still with 'mirrored' monitors and 'mirror' unchecked on 'Display' screen. I checked 'Mirror' , and applied' to see what happened - two blurred screens. Then unchecked and the side-by-side re-appeared. So problem 'solved' even though I don't understand ...

Re: Backintime fails with Segmentation Error
backintime-gnome doesn't work for you ? If not, you may need to install the kde-runtime libraries (for qt). (see Mint 18 Release Announcements) Can you give me a link to Mint 18 release Announcements please I'm not sure how to use backintime-gnome - it is installed (via software manager) but not in...

Backintime fails with Segmentation Error
I tried to access an archived file with Backintime today and it didn't run. ran backintime-qt4 (name from whisker menu) from console and got 'segmentation fault'. I last backed up in July just before(?) upgrading to 18.2. (attached config file dated 5/7/2017) I managed to find the file on the archiv...

Just Updated to xfce 18.1 Mintinstall still regularly falling over both from menu and command line. It loaded OK twice before starting to fail. A reboot will usually cure it for a short time. Synaptic show Mintinstall 7.7.5 - latest version gksu mintinstall Vector smash protection is enabled. add_ca...

Re: Function Keys not working in Double Commander
Problem solved !!
I've been using this keyboard for over 6 years and I've only just realised that there is a 'Function Lock' button above NumLock the numeric pad. It had been switch off.
Press it - everything OK.
Doh !!

Thanks Odyseus for formally reporting this.
This morning I realised that my Conky screen was dying at the same time as SM became inoperative.
There seems to be some connection but I'm not sure what it is !

Re: Function Keys not working in Double Commander
On further investigation it seems that the problem is with my keyboard (Microsoft Digital Media Keyboard 1.0A 1031) or with the software's interaction with it. Almost all Hotkeys that include Function keys (F1-F12) don't seem to work with all(?) applications, (exception F1 - help in LibreOffice). Af...

I don't know whether this is the same problem. I upgraded to 18 XFCE 3 days ago. I noticed that Software Manager didn't always run OK. Today it wouldn't run from any of the menu (Whisker) options. I then tried running from the terminal : gksu mintinstall Vector smash protection is enabled. add_categ...
