how to unlock install media screensaver

I just booted Linux mint cinnamon (latest - just downloaded linuxmint-18-cinnamon-64bit.iso. not the beta.) I started a long job - backing up existing drives 'just in case.' The screen saver kicked in and I can't figure out how to unlock it. Wiggling the mouse and banging on the keyboard brings up a...

Re: Frequency control on battery?

Hi Pierre, It's been a while since I installed Windows - that was back when Win10 was an evaluation. This PC came with so much crapware on it (Superfish) that I just wiped and started from a blank disk. I think I had to install some drivers but I think that was touchpad and video and not much more. ...

Frequency control on battery?

Lenovo Y50-70 running Mint (Cinnamon) installed this afternoon. (Previous install was Mint too.) Processor is an I7-4710HQ I cannot see how to increase the CPU frequency while on battery. It runs at about 800 MHz regardless of load. I looked in power settings and find nothing to favor processing spe...

Re: Install Linux Mint 17 to mdadm RAID array

Many thanks for the useful information. I ran into another difficulty with this. My situation was that I wanted to migrate an existing installation (/ and /home partitions) to a pair of RAID0 SSDs. In this regard the situation was a little different because mdadm was already installed on the destina...

Re: install (or copy) to mdadm RAID

Thanks all for the replies. Apologies for the delay but this has not been a top priority. "grub-install.real: error: disk `md3' not found." Says it all. The kernel and initramfs must be in a simple partition where GRUB can find them using the BIOS...not in a /dev/mdm device (which won't even exist u...

install (or copy) to mdadm RAID

Hi folks, I'm trying to get Mint 17.3 installed to a pair of mdadm RAIDed drives. My preference is actually to migrate my existing install to the RAID pair but I have not had any luck with that. I did find a video showing an installation to RAID0 and thought that might be an easier route. I booted a...

Re: 17.2 live CD mint password?

Hi folks, Many thanks for the help. I tried 'mint', '' (no password), 'Mint', 'Rafaela' and a few other things I could think of. I made sure caps lock was not on. In retrospect I should have switched to a text console and killed the screen saver. I did try to restart X ('sudo /etc/init.d/mdm restart...

17.2 live CD mint password?

In case I get into the situation where I need it (again) what is it? I started a long job after booting the 17.2 live Mate USB and when I came back, the desktop was locked. I tried hitting <return> and entering mint and Mint and none worked. Thanks! PS: It would be cool to either not have a password...

Can't connect to another WiFi AP

Hi folks, Situation: Connected to one AP and there is another better one. Both are encrypted with WPA2. I click on the second one and it never completes the connection. If I hover over the applet in the panel, it informs me that it needs a password. I am ready to enter the password. but never get a ...

Cinnamon and various mouse/touchpad (and a crash) issues

Hi folks, I'm having several likely unrelated mouse/pointer issues and hoping I can get some help resolving these. H/W is a Lenovo Y-50 with a Synaptics touchpad and a USB Logitech "Anywhere" mouse. Running 17.2/Cinnamon+Compiz. It all looks very nice when working. :D 1) Pointer freeze - When it fre...

WiFi, SMP but not both

Hi folks,x I've installed 32 bit LMDE 2 Mate on an 2011 Macbook (Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P7350), Since it has 4GB RAM I went with a 32 bit install. I found that the default kernel does not support SMP. I installed the 686-pae kernel which shows both cores in /proc/cpuinfo but WiFi does not work. The WiFi ...

wl module missing for 686 kernel

Hi folks, I have recently installed Betsy on a Macbook running on a Core 2 Duo. The default 586 kernel works fine with WiFi apparently using the wl kernel module: hbarta@baldwin ~ $ uname -a Linux baldwin 3.16.0-4-586 #1 Debian 3.16.7-ckt9-3~deb8u1 (2015-04-24) i686 GNU/Linux hbarta@baldwin ~ $ lsmo...

Re: Edimax EW-7811Un working - almost!

I was happy to read out how easy the drivers would be to install. Unfortunately it turns out to be not so easy any more. I just downloaded EW-7811UTC_Linux_driver_1.0.1.6.zip and unzipped it. I found no install.sh. There is a tarball and a directory with some files including a Makefile. No README or...

Re: [solved] How to add a PPA given the URL

Thanks for the prompt and informative reply. I knew it was old but somehow hoped it was still available. It might be but seems hard to find. Just in case anyone is looking for a simple solution, I found this: http://tuxmatters.com/2013/08/30/how-to-simply-view-weather-in-conky-2/ and implemented it....

[solved] How to add a PPA given the URL

Sorry, cannot search for this because the terms are "too common." <sigh> A Google search has not been helpful either as it just shows the syntax for app-add-repository. The PPA I wish to add is http://ppa.launchpad.net/m-buck/ubuntu (from http://www.maketecheasier.com/how-to-create-a-minimal-and-bea...

Re: Another "no sound" problem .. Mint 16

I solved my problem by getting a plug in audio card. ($10US for a used SB Audigy2 ZS) I do not know if I sidestepped a configuration problem or worked around non-functioning H/W, though I suspect the latter. I also went into BIOS settings and disabled the on board audio controller. This leaves my sy...

Re: Another "no sound" problem .. Mint 16

I cannot rule out tee possibility that the sound H/W built into my motherboard is no longer functioning. Years ago I overclocked this system and it was rock solid (crunching SETI, Rosetta, Folding@Home and so on on both CPU and GPU.) After about a year the sound quit but returned to normal operation...

Re: Another "no sound" problem .. Mint 16

No combination of 0/1 for those two settings seemed to make any difference. I found instructions here for reinstalling drivers and config files and did so. I've been thrashing at this and may have messed something up. At least I should be back where I started and still have no sound. I did some sear...

Re: Another "no sound" problem .. Mint 16

In System Settings-->Sound, what tabs do you see? Is there a tab for "hardware"? Did you try the /etc/pulse/default.pa fix? Tabs are Input, Output, Sound Effects, Applications. hbarta@olive ~ $ tail /etc/pulse/default.pa #.endif load-module module-switch-on-port-available ### Make some devices defa...
