Re: Kernel 5.15.0-87 also scrambles AMD screen

If I choose the recovery option when booting for 0-87 kernel, then immediately choose the top option to continue booting normally, the system comes up fine with the latest kernel. I've done this several times, and it always works. Any ideas? If you are booting in Recovery mode, that adds the nomode...

Re: Kernel 5.15.0-87 also scrambles AMD screen

I began having this problem after upgrading from 5.15.0-84. Even tried it on a completely new install. I did come across a strange twist that might have some bearing on this; if anyone might know, I'd love some input. If I choose the recovery option when booting for 0-87 kernel, then immediately cho...

Boot problems with latest kernels (5.15.0-86 / 5.15.0-87)

I have an old ThinkPad E575 laptop with Mint 21.2, Cinnamon 5.84, 16G RAM, 500GB disk, no Windows. It has an AMD Pro CPU, and AMD Wani (Radeon) built-in graphics It's been running fine until the last two kernel updates. Now, after the login, it starts to run and the screen suddenly goes blank with i...

Re: What is Ubuntu Expanded Security maintenance?

Strange; I've never seen that message ever, neither for VT or ssh. I'm running Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon (5.6.7) now, but never saw it previously either.

Re: What happened to Cinnamenu?

Sorry, I just found this topic, and I'm confused. I don't remember ever using Cinnamenu in the past. I have Mint 19.3 (upgraded from 19.2), and I opened the applets and see cinnamenu right on top. I added it, and it seems to work fine. For right now, I have it assigned to Super-R, and the regular me...

Re: Downloading in browsers - open instead of download

I did touch a.epub then drag/dropped the file into FF (Edit: v45.3) and got the menu below: I never figured out how to make this happen, but I've now come close enough, I guess. After trying both Cinnamon and Mate direct from the live usb drive to determine that it's not automatic, I tried one more...

Re: Downloading in browsers - open instead of download

I booted up a LiveCD (Cinnamon) and got the same behavior. So perhaps it is something to do with Cinnamon vs Gnome, or the way Nautilus interacts with Gnome. EDIT: Tried live Mate, same results both native and after installing Calibre. No choice to open, just save. I can only conclude that Mint does...

I did touch a.epub then drag/dropped the file into FF (Edit: v45.3) and got the menu below: I tried the download with a new profile, and got the same results, saying something like "you have chosen to open ..." Cancel Save I'll try it from a liveCD without installing Calibre. But this use...

I did touch a.epub then drag/dropped the file into FF (Edit: v45.3) and got the menu below: Thanks a lot for doing that; actually, I'm surprised by your result. Why would Firefox want to save a file that is already on your computer? But it does give me a hint about what to try. If I drag an ebook f...

Re: Downloading in browsers - open instead of download

Click on the file link to download it. Select how you want Firefox to handle the file: Open with: Saves the file to a temporary folder and opens it in the default application for that file type. To select an application, click Browse.... Thanks, but I saw that article. If you look closely, you'll n...

Downloading in browsers - open instead of download

I recently switched from Ubuntu to Mint Cinnamon. In Firefox, when I click on certain files, I got a dialog asking me whether I wanted to open or save the file. It defaults to the correct app to use in this case (I may have once told it what to use). For other files, the only choice is to save the f...

Re: Does ATI hate Linux? Issue with Gnome 3 and Catalyst

Well, I have an AMD Radeon 5450 which works fine with both the standard and the AMD proprietary drivers for Gnome 3 itself. It does have problems with the proprietary driver in some Gnome shells, though. But the reason I ended up with this card is because I first tried a similar price/features card ...

Re: Ubuntu catching up to Windows

I don't really understand why you would want to even use Ubuntu (or Mint) when there are many nice distros that are very small. And since Ubuntu is using Unity with no recourse to gnome, it seems, why even try it with a small system? I'd say the disk size doesn't matter considering how cheap hard dr...

Re: Grub2 information & Links.

The same story here. ... I'm all for progress, and I once looked forward to Gnome 3, but so far, it's not there for me. Forget Unity, I don't like it at all. To me, Linux is all about choices, and Unity took away most of them for me. It might be good for beginners, but everyone needs a path for pro...

Re: Why Google Isn't Google Using Mint?

I might not mind using the custom search if it were easy to use, but why doesn't it have arrows for next and previous pages like the standard search page? Is this a limitation of this method, or did someone think it was a good idea to need to click the page number from the list?

Re: Grub2 information & Links.

When I first started using Linux regularly a few years ago(Ubuntu), and learned the basics of grub, I loved the fact that I understood grub well, and could easily install, configure, or fix it. I have a couple of drives in my system, with a lot of partitions, and I often like to try out new distros....

Re: Ubuntu catching up to Windows

In terms of speed, Windows will always have an advantage for GUI, since it writes directly to the hardware layer, and doesn't need to support other window managers, etc, like X-windows. X-windows has a disadvantage of being a client/server system, too. But then, after adding anti-virus, etc, to Wind...
