Do you still have win 8 and planning on using it?. If you do, then you need the EFI, but if you have clean hdd and planning on using Mint only then you will have to reformat your hdd with MBR and just run install. At the end of install, grub will be installed.

I had that problem and solved in radical way - reformated with MBR. I am not suggesting that this is the right way, as you will loose everything on hdd. If you have win7 or win 8 then you have GPT partition that Mint can not handle ( at this time). Just wait for improved version.

Yep, it work. Formatting to MBR did the trick. I am happy man now. To some other guys - do not follow me. I do not mind do some experiment. I had that problem too and, after 4 days of "fighting with", I give up. It does have problems with raid drives. Too bad as I like the debian mint.
