Re: LMDE 3 and Buster

You could just load Debian Buster to see what you think of vanilla Debian.

Re: Difficulties with booting from CD and USB

Is the real question "Difficulties with booting from CD and USB" or difficulty booting LMDE from disk? The answer to the first problem would be found within your BIOS settings - provided that the USB/DVD's you are using have been written to be bootable. Have you tested booting the USB/DVD's in a sec...

Re: Difficulties with booting from CD and USB

If you can boot via GRUB, you should certainly be able to boot from DVD/USB, assuming your boot order is listed correctly in your BIOS.
Once you can do this, you could boot from any convenient Linux distro and run gparted to resize any partitions that are the wrong size.

Re: Are all these upgrading issues related to partitionsize?

I'm almost certain that your problems are down to timeshift taking up considerable space on your / partition. You can check this with sudo timeshift --list This will show something like ~ $ sudo timeshift --list Device : /dev/sda? [...] 8 snapshots, 24.3 GB free If you create a separate partition fo...

Re: [SOLVED] Failing upgrade from LMDE2 due to Gnome-media

Glad it's fixed! You have to read Clem's upgrade instructions carefully - they are well written and designed to catch all possible problems. They give a lot of feedback and require you to take the ultimate decision to proceed with the upgrade. Personally, I downloaded LMDE3 onto a USB stick and ran ...

Re: Failing upgrade from LMDE2 due to Gnome-media

Deleting the files instead of the package is the wrong thing to do. Removal of the package via apt or apt-get is the proper way. Translating that last bit (using Google) into English gives:- 1956 to upgrade, 515 to reinstall, 109 to remove and 1 not to upgrade. Need to download 1,546 MB archive. Aft...

Re: Failing upgrade from LMDE2 due to Gnome-media

Does locate -i gnome-media return any results?

Did you remove gnome-media using either apt or apt-get?
Does dpkg-query -L gnome-media produce any output?

If the above doesn't produce any output and provided you have a data backup I'd be inclined to ignore the error and proceed.

Remember to repeat the download & compile every time a security fix or substantial update occurs.

Re: unable to read system logs (or any logs in logs app)

LMDE works out of the box for me. Most logs in /var/log can be read with the default text editor ( xed ) as read-only files by any user, but any editor would do. A few logs require root authority for access. Because LMDE is based around Debian, it means that I don't have to put up with Canonical's l...

Re: How to install NVIDIA drivers in LMDE 3

I tried this - text seems a bit misleading. Running inxi -Gx says that my current driver for my not especially new card is nvidia v: 390.116 However when I run nvidia-detect it says:- Detected NVIDIA GPUs: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GK208 [GeForce GT 730] [10de:1287...

1. Handbrake is a real beast - it will run all cores of your CPU flat-out! I've written a rather poor script that monitors the CPU temperature and suspends Handbrake until the temperature becomes more sensible. 2. The lm-sensors package (which includes the sensors-detect program works for me)... 3. ...

Re: cannot print or add printers

It's not recommended that you add any Ubuntu packages into LMDE3, since LMDE is directly based upon Debian. Also, you should not be trying to install any PPA's... LMDE3 does have a program - system-config-printer - normally launched as a GUI option. It's probably worth trying to install the package ...

Have you tried creating a directory, say /media/oc/storage that you can mount sda6 on?
It's a bit confusing mounting a vfat filesystem onto a subdirectory of a ext4 filesystem.

If the present setup worked then /home/oc/storage is simultaneously an ext4 and a vfat file system.

Re: LMDE 4

I've noticed that Mint gets priority & new Mint's come out every 2 years.

So expect the next Mint some time after April 2020,
and LMDE4 not until about 6 months after that.

Re: LMDE3 /etc/debian_version

What does Stretch version 9.3 (or 9.7) actually mean? Debian is made up of lots of different packages, each with its own version number. Each time Debian decide they have enough updates/fixes to warrant a new number, they increase it by 0.1 I've had LMDE3 for a few months now and I get a few updates...
