Re: How to "dist-upgrade" the kernel in LM18?

the traditional . . . very simple "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" brings historically the relevant upgrades . . . including basic kernel updates . . . and also generally in LM it all goes well . . . . If you're lucky. If not, you get regressions from level 4 and 5 updates. Do what you prefer,...

Re: Screen Dim in Mate: Blank the screen, without dimming

@hyper-nova: Interesting question, might be addressed by tweaking the power management settings so that "sleep" happens before "dimming" . . . there does need to be a modicum of patience when dealing with OS. But, this may relate to a similar issue that I'm still experiencing in ...

Re: from mac to linuxmint

@e.e.p. With the "more or less" i mean that any activity in the laptop makes the ventilators work at very high speed the same as if i was rendering video. Only sometimes the issue doesn't happen and I can open the browser without that annoying thing (so it's unnecesary the speed of the fa...

Re: from mac to linuxmint

@este.el.paz Thank you for your answer. Yes, i have os 10.6.8 installed and "more or less" running. I'm trying to install the LM17 cinnamon, but I tried also the kde version without luck too. As I launch gparted to see the partitions he can't recognize the location of some partitions. (un...

Re: from mac to linuxmint

@juergen: **Sometimes** these erros are due to md5sum errors . . . did you check that number before burning the DVD? And, then did you use the slowest burn speed possible? Also, could you boot the DVD and test the system before you tried to install it? Did everything work OK then? Are you using rEF...

Re: from mac to linuxmint

Hi. I'm new in linux OS, and actually I would like to install the Linux 17. I'm trying to install it on a intel-based mac (macbook 1.1). I don't know why, but the install menu stops between the steps 3 and 4, (before the menu that asks If I want to keep the MacOs and install linuxmint alongside), a...

Re: Why does cursor move erratically & erase data?

I2k4, et al: Appreciate the thoughts on the "syndaemon" options . . . might be worth it for the recent postee . . . for myself, I switched over to Xubuntu 14.04 hoping to get around the problem--which didn't work. But so far unchecking "tap to click" has been the simplest "s...

Re: White dropshadows around windows? Cinnamon or Intel bug

Thanks for responding. Since the shadows are all wrong, I decided to go and install LM17 MATE on the laptop. If a fix is ever made available, I will install the Cinnamon version next time. @elytron: Good choice . . . the MATE DE is very good . . . and lately it even has the GNOME floating feet scre...

Re: White dropshadows around windows? Cinnamon or Intel bug

I was going to install LM17 CInnamon, but then noticed that all the shadows are white. I am on a dv1000 series laptop, with the same Intel graphics. Seeking a fix for this issue. Please Note: I also had to add "forcepae" before it would even boot into the live USB. Homefry: Don't know if ...

Re: ways to re-install grub after osx upgrade?

It appears that you have a drive which has GPT partitioning. Is Mint installed in UEFI mode? If so, the rEFind program could help http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/ Recover from a failed Linux boot http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-GRUB2-features/index.html @austin.texas: Appreciate the rep...

ways to re-install grub after osx upgrade? [fixed]

Folks: Did a recent upgrade of osx partition and that seemed to "disconnect" GRUB boot from the LM16 partitions, tried to follow the LM community tutorial on re-installing grub . . . tried several ways, so far no luck. I can boot LM from the SuperGrub2 CD, and I tried to use LM boot recove...

Re: Why does cursor move erratically & erase data?

This has been bugging me for a while, too. The idea that it might be caused by palming the touchpad makes sense. Have to say I had been blaming Mint/Ubuntu for this problem, but it may be it's really more a problem of hand and laptop positioning that can't be fully anticipated by the OS. @12k4: Tha...

Re: MATE 16 on MBPro seems to run warmer?

Hmm... A shot in the dark, if you can test it, does running straight Ubuntu Saucy have the same problem? clfarron4(of9): Thanks for stopping back by again, much appreciated. So, perhaps that is what you were hinting the first time you posted, and now you've spelled it out in terms of the comparo to...

Re: MATE 16 on MBPro seems to run warmer?

Still have yet to get some kind of insight on whether it is possible to adjust something to actually fix something, or find out whether this will be fixed in LM17 . . . considering that only a couple of apps are open and getting this warm . . . seems like should be running cooler??

Re: Why does cursor move erratically & erase data?

I also encountered this problem running Linux Mint 16 and Cinnamon. I share your frustration - it is particularly annoying to have some of your text wiped out at random. I think I may have found a solution! Turning off all the keyboard shortcuts on the Typing tab (and possibly a few others) seems t...

Re: Why does cursor move erratically & erase data?

Damn... all this reading and no one hase figure it out yet. Well, for all it matters, I've been having (is this construction correct?) the same problem both in a Sony Vayo notebook and at my PC. In the notebook, it was worst: mouse would freeze completely. There, the solution was to disabilitate th...

Re: MATE 16 on MBPro seems to run warmer?

clfarron4: Right, could be kernel related . . . someone responded to another thread that was discussing this "warmer running" issue by saying that "Cinnamon uses more resources" . . . . I don't use Cinnamon . . . seems too "sid-like" for my MBPro . . . but I did use MAT...

Change from what? I'm surprised you have Linux working on a MB TBH. Re: Dual Boot/GRUB Issues

@este.el.paz When you ask about the "bios_grub" partition do you mean a partition for /boot? If so, then yes. If not, then that may be where I went wrong. I also believe that I did flag the "/" partition as well, if I remember correctly. Will running the install again and choosi...
