Re: Selecting Kernel Issues (stuck on 6.1.0-18 even though I want 6.5)

You need to download both the 6.5 Headers and 6.5 Image if you are installing from Synaptic in the Kernel and Modules section. I've done this several times and it installs correctly. @Nuts2u: Thanks for stopping by . . . I did do that, syanaptic included the "dependency" for the 6.5 . . ....

Re: Selecting Kernel Issues (stuck on 6.1.0-18 even though I want 6.5)

Latest update: Faye failed to boot making the "8 of 9" choice from advanced options . . . and then the top hit in grub . . . having to shut down two times this morning in the effort to boot to Faye . . . went on to Trixie for my daily driver. Then, as I have been contemplating "erasur...

Re: Selecting Kernel Issues (stuck on 6.1.0-18 even though I want 6.5)

Wow . . . that's all I can say . . . . I ran the suggested command to pull in the backport kernel . . . a little voice said, "Noooooo . . . don't do it, you are limping along on 6.1, it's kind of working . . . ." The other voice said, "6.1 is old man kernel, move it on up." So I ...

Re: Selecting Kernel Issues (stuck on 6.1.0-18 even though I want 6.5)

Thanks for the follow up on the question. I didn't know the 6.5 kernel was even offered in Synaptic on LMDE. But, others have gotten it with the command I posted. Hmm . . . it was in there in the "kernel and modules" category . . . . To put it in a simplistic way linux-image-amd64 is the m...

Re: Selecting Kernel Issues (stuck on 6.1.0-18 even though I want 6.5)

See if this gets you the higher kernel: sudo apt install -t bookworm-backports linux-image-amd64 Reboot @sleeper12: Thanks for that data, I'll test it out. Question on why Synaptic would show "6.5" and select the other needed packages, but then have it not show up after "apply" ...

Selecting Kernel Issues (stuck on 6.1.0-18 even though I want 6.5)

If you suspect a kernel issue reboot, and at the grub screen choose 'Advanced options' drop down to choose the previous working kernel. If that helps use Update Manager to remove the newer offending kernel. Grub will always choose the latest installed kernel. et al: I'm having a similar issue with ...

Re: After a few package upgrades LMDE boots to ER shell???

Think I figured out one of the problems . . . /etc/fstab data seems to show /efi/boot as "sdc1" . . . rather than sda5 where I had pointed it on install . . . . Going to try to edit the data there to see if that provides the fix?? I thought I had checked /etc/fstab previously in the thread...

Re: After a few package upgrades LMDE boots to ER shell???

It would be worth installing LMDE6 as a VM, possibly on a working LMDE6 system. You could then try new kinds of things, such as BTRFS on the VM version in a non-destructive way. The default install for LMDE uses ext4, the normal install seems to include the btrfs-progs package This package contains...

Re: After a few package upgrades LMDE boots to ER shell???

@et al: Realizing that I might be flogging the inert horse . . . but today again was, in theory, "Faye day" . . . gave it two cold boots and each time it went to "initramfs" shell . . . in which commands are not recognized . . . . I moved on to Trixie, Trixie self-identifies and ...

Re: After a few package upgrades LMDE boots to ER shell???

I am using the 6.1.0-18 kernel with a low-end nvidia card in LMDE6 but with "standard" nouveau drivers, without any problems. @axisofevil: Good to know, so there is "hope" that someday Faye will figure her identity out and all will be well?? I too, should be using "nouveau&...

Re: LMDE 6 non-revival from suspend?? && how to edit sources?

Possibly the failing to resume from suspend and failed cold boot after is related. I don't know enough about Apple or Nvidia devices to take a further guess what to look at. IIRC issues with resuming from suspend can sometimes be worked around by reducing the maximum sleep state depth in the UEFI, ...

Re: After a few package upgrades LMDE boots to ER shell???

Maybe try updating the initramfs with sudo update-initramfs -u if you haven't tried yet. But because it sometimes boots, sometimes doesn't, that's a very wild guess. A kernel update would have done this already. @xenopeek: Thanks for the suggestion over here . . . when I get back to LMDE I'll give ...

Re: LMDE 6 non-revival from suspend?? && how to edit sources?

@xenopeek: Thanks for the follow-up . . . I **thought** I was going to be able to mark this as "solved" since grub is now booting the xx -18 kernel, because after posting the data I was able to revive from suspend. But, testing it again I was one time able to boot cleanly to LMDE, but it d...

LMDE 6 non-revival from suspend?? && how to edit sources?

Folks: Posting over here in this sub-forum for a new issue with my LMDE install . . . having had problems with Faye not being able to find itself to boot up, today, after second attempt to boot . . . Faye failed to wake up after suspend . . . . I have had this issue in my openSUSE installs over the ...

Re: After a few package upgrades LMDE boots to ER shell???

OK, thanks kindly for your assistance. Doesn't seem like any other offerings on the issue . . . I guess no point to posting updates on it . . . . If LMDE can't repair itself soon it'll prolly go the way of nuke n pave.

Re: After a few package upgrades LMDE boots to ER shell???

OK, so for kicks I got out my SuperGrub2 ext flash drive, figured out which line would be for LMDE and it booted right up. I then ran an apt dist-upgrade and the only thing it did was to remove kernel 6.1.0-17-amd64 . . . and it now wants to boot vmlinuz-6.1.0-12-amd64. I believe the latest kernel ...

Re: After a few package upgrades LMDE boots to ER shell???

Don't know if there have been any changes to the LMDE live iso since 1/6/24 that would warrant a fresh download and reinstall of / . . . haven't had time to mess with reinstalling or chrooting over into the system . . . . ISOs are frozen in time at the time they are made. They are never updated. On...
