Re: "File Open" dialogues and file delete seem to be getting instructions twice
Thanks for the reply! I don't know if it is the same thing, I tend to prefer keyboard shortcuts, and saw these duplications in response to keyboard instructions rather than mouse. In some programs there is no problem -- which I put down to different programs having different File Open dialogs (I rea...

"File Open" dialogues and file delete seem to be getting instructions twice
Originally posted as "xreader File Open dialog, how to type in path?" If I try to open a file in xreader or LibreOffice, and do ctrl-L so I could paste in a path, the path at the top of the dialogue flickers instead of changing to an edit box control. I have another PC, which has Cinnamon ...

Re: How to verify Linux Mint 20 ISO
Thanks Joe & zcot for replying. Delays did not resolve the issue, I tried again a few times since last posting, always with the same results, "gpg: keyserver receive failed: Server indicated a failure". So I don't think it's a temporary outage at the server end. The computer is using a...

How to verify Linux Mint 20 ISO
Hi all Trying to follow the lm instructions for downloading and verifying the ISO, hitting a problem with the verification. I've downloaded linuxmint-20-mate-64bit.iso from https://linuxmint.com/download.php and then followed the "Read the documentation" link and then the "Installatio...

several applications doing things twice [was: Re: xreader File Open dialog, how to type in path?]
Thanks. Doesn't work, but it looks like it's not an xreader problem. The same thing happens in LibreOffice. Also, if I delete some files in Caja, two instances of the confirm dialog appear. I'm not using this PC very much, I use a couple of bash scripts and do a few bits and pieces with Geany, which...

xreader File Open dialog, how to type in path?
Hi I open xreader (through menu -> Accessories -> Document Viewer, or by typing xreader in a terminal) and want to open a file. So I use File|Open, or maybe ctrl-O to get the File Open or Open Document dialog. Now I would want to paste in the name of the file, or to type in the path. It's easier tha...

Re: TiMidity++ 2.15.0
Good luck! Even 2.14 would be an improvement. The version in Mint 19.1 is 2.13.2-41, which has a nasty bug where the generated sound has crackles at the start. According to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=693011 there are also clicks all the way through the generated sound, but you...

[SOLVED] Re: LM19.1, Intel i915; 2nd monitor output (VGA) very slow
Found the problem. It was software, but it wasn't the Intel driver. On the old machine, Menu | Control Centre | Desktop Settings -> Windows Manager was Marco + Compositing. On the new one, it was Marco + Compton. I switched the new one to Marco + Compositing and I can show slide presentations again....

Re: LM19.1, Intel i915; 2nd monitor output (VGA) very slow
Some more information - I dug out the old hard drive from before the upgrade. Put it in and this problem is gone, but obviously at the expense of going back a good bit with everything else, so that's not a solution. I was wrong about the pre-upgrade Mint version, it's actually Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa a...

[SOLVED] LM19.1, Intel i915; 2nd monitor output (VGA) very slow
Hi I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 (a decade old or so), fresh install of LM 19.1, with Mate. I was happy with LM18 but when I got a new SSD I put a fresh install on. Of the several issues I have, the most serious is that if I plug in a VGA monitor (projector) it's very slow. This was not the case befor...

Re: What is the best strategy to preserve a laptop accumulator?
From my google searches about how to improve my battery life: for longest life, Lithium-Ion batteries like to be kept half-charged in the fridge. So as gm10 says, charge it but don't overcharge, and remove it when you don't need it. Try not to completely discharge it too often. Early rechargeable ba...

Re: [Solved] Best way to upgrade PHP on Mint 17.3?
Well, I noticed a PHP update in the update manager a couple of days ago, allowed it to install, and everything is still working. So as far as I'm concerned the PPA is the way to go, so I have marked this question [Solved]. I did have to install php5.6-mysql but that's no big deal (or at least it was...

Re: Best way to upgrade PHP on Mint 17.3?
Thank you, both of you. I tried AscLinux's link for searching for php. It was the same as lmuserx4849's suggestion but as a link - search for site:forums.linuxmint.com "php" on duckduckgo. The "site:" thing is worth learning, thanks. It found some pages about php, and some with l...

[Solved] Best way to upgrade PHP on Mint 17.3?
What is the best way to upgrade PHP on Mint 17.3? I just upgraded to 17.3 from 17.1 because I had PHP 5.5.9. I want to use the hash_equals() function, it's supposed to protect against attacks on my website. But the function is only available from PHP 5.6. The live server that I rent has 5.6.26, so i...

Re: Firefox update breaks Mate theme
So, Monsta solved most of my problem - basically, go to Package Manager and install clearlooks-phenix-theme - but that still left the broken vertical scrollbar. Well, I found a post on another forum, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2323003&p=13481874#post13481874 There, vasa1 said: What...

Re: Firefox update breaks Mate theme
@bobsmith Hi Bob I tried following Monsta's suggestion too. Here's how I did it - Menu -> Package Manager - Type clearlooks into the search box - The first two options that were found were: clearlooks-phenix-theme and gtk-clearlooks-gperfection2-theme - I selected both (in case there are also some g...

<SOLVED> Firefox update breaks Mate theme
Yesterday I allowed an update of Firefox to be installed via the Update Manager. Since then the menus and slide bars in Firefox look like something out of X instead of Mate. Bare rectangles instead of the proper clearlooks sliders. Also, when I click on the vertical slider, Firefox doesn't go down b...

Re: Mouse Sensitivity in control center, not working
Hi Richyrich Thanks for the reply. It was worth a try[1] - unfortunately, lomoco -i just says 005.002: 046d:c52f Unsupported Logitech device: Unknown so it doesn't look like it's going to help in my case. I suppose the question I should be asking is: how do I report this bug? Because the fact that t...

Mouse Sensitivity in control center, not working
Am running Mate 17.1, upgraded from a clean install of 17, with Mate. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop, and a Logitech M185 wireless USB mouse. Being a laptop, my laptop also has a touchpad. So there are two input devices. I suspect that is the source of the problem. Is there any tweak that will m...

Re: How do I get launch feedback for slow programs in Mate?
Might try that. But... I'm curious. Where does the launch feed back come from? Is it from Mate or from the application? Because if I double-click Thunderbird, it definitely changes the mouse cursor to a spinning disc thing, which is perfect. Is there a setting in Mate that does that, or is Thunderbi...
