I had the same problem with freshly installed Linux Mint 17.1 mate and nvidia drivers 331. The steps to fix the problem: 1) Install dconf-tools package to get the dconf-editor. 2) Run dconf-editor. 3) Find two entries for xrandr - one under gnome, other under mate and disable them. 4) Restart. I have Linux Mint 13 64-bit Mate both on desktop and laptop. Wine is working well on both computers. The only problem is the wine short-cuts in menu "Other" - no separate menu with subfolders for wine. Thought about reinstalling wine, but after reading this thread decided to keep it as is....
