Re: Splash screen question
All good info thank you all. I can install direct to a USB, but I need portability. That's how I set up my users, as it leaves their machines largely untouched. They are rather nervous about anyone making substantial changes to their new machines. If they wish to dispose of their machines, it's then...

Re: Splash screen question
I'll ignore your first paragraph, as it's facetious. I DO see the dots and the Mint logo on boot which indicates the system IS doing something. I just don't want to view all the background info on startup, as I'm giving this stick to another party and it only invites concern, Thanks anyway for your ...

Splash screen question
I run Mint 17.1 xfce from a 32GB Sandisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 flash drive. Has a fat32 2GB primary system partition and a casper-rw utilising the remainder of the stick. Used Gparted to partition the disk & create a new casper-rw partition after deleting the original one. This configuration runs li...

Re: Clone drive using DD
Thanks buzzsaw, Will use bs=1M as you suggest. (and sudo, which I omitted from my post). Can you clarify this:- Is it better to boot from a Mint13 DVD, then insert the Mint13 USB stick and DD to the blank. (or even possible). Or Boot from the Mint13 stick and DD to the blank. That is, does the sourc...

Clone drive using DD
Hi, I have Mint13 running as my main OS on a live 32Gb USB stick and have installed all my regular programs on the stick. I wish to clone this stick. As there are only 2 usb ports on my machine and Mint 13 is using one, leaving one spare, is it safe to use the DD command to clone this live install a...

Re: skype can't connect
Am I the only one having problems with 4.3 Skype. Ver 4.2 worked perfectly with video calls between my machine and an Apple Mac and/or a Windows machine. Since I upgraded to 4.3, the video is poor, picture freezes and sound is lousy. Turning off the receivers camera improves the sound, but the video...

Re: skype can't connect
Yep, except Hangouts is very messy to use. Lots of unnecessary stuff to wade thru just to get to make a connection. It's confusing and also both parties need to be signed in to use. Once setup is better than Skype IMHO. My problems have not resolved. Gone from a perfect working 4.2 Skype in Mint 13 ...

Re: skype can't connect
Been using Skype 4.2 in Mint13 for ages. No problems at all until updated to 4.3 yesterday. Now Video at the receiving end stutters and freezes and audio is missing every second word. If I switch my camera off, audio at the receiving end is then fine and clear. I can see the other party clearly. As ...

Re: Bluetooth and Mate17
Have you tried to trust the device in blueman? Yep! Tried that. I get "success" connecting via headset and the panel icon indicates green which is normal, but no sound from speaker. Audio sync fails everytime. In Mint 13 in sound preferences output, there is an entry for "built-in au...

Desktop shortcuts
In Mint13, all my created desktop shortcuts display the same icon, even though I choose the appropriate one for each shortcut. As well, if I select a folder containing jpegs and alter them in any way, eg just by opening them to view, the jpg pic in the folder is overwritten with the same icon that i...

Re: Re: Bluetooth and Mate17
Have Mint17 booting from a USB stick. Installed Blueman, but can't get my Logitech mobile boombox to connect. Works fine in Mint 13, after a bit of trial and error fiddling. Package manager shows "libmatebluetooth" is installed in 13, but is missing in 17. Also libgnome-bluetooth8 is in 1...

Desktop shortcut mystery
Hi, In Mint13 Mate, desktop shortcuts to Web pages from Firefox have always worked fine. Create a new one and add the icon for the particular page. No problems! However, now every new shortcut defaults the icon to the first one created, so now I have many shortcuts to different pages all with the sa...

Re: Linux Mint 17 "Qiana" MATE RC is out!
Just tried Mint17 Mate RC-64bit. Copied to DVD, booted and testing from there. Initial observations:- Slow to boot from drive .. 3min 45secs to a workable desktop. (I3-4GB ram) First boot showed 10 instances of caja opened on the desktop and all closed OK. Subsequent boots OK. From mate menu all app...

Re: XP Wireless connection in Virtualbox
Thanks Kalyk, :D Yep, 512 is better. BTW, XP runs like a charm in Virtualbox. I did mess up though, by installing AVG free antivirus. Unfortunately I picked the wrong one to install. It came with a lot of advertising and in typical win fashion has installed a lot of files, which are almost impossibl...

Re: XP Wireless connection in Virtualbox
When XP is running inside Virtualbox it won't have a wireless connection. Because of the virtualization XP will see the connection as just wired. It then shares whatever connection the computer running Virtualbox has. Another question if I may! When memory is allocated to the guest OS in the virtua...
