Re: What is Ubuntu Expanded Security maintenance?
I'm using 20.3 and I get the ESM messages upon ssh login. I think they just started within the last week.

Building a home server
I have an aging computer running Mint that has gradually morphed from a desktop to a headless server over the past 12 years. I'm thinking it may be time to upgrade to something newer. What I use it for: [*]SMB file server [*]Maintaining a local backup for Dropbox [*]Plex server: so I can watch my vi...

Re: Errors from new external hard drive. [solved]
I formatted to ext4 with no change. I was reading this thread and maybe it's a problem with the disk powering up. The power is from a power brick plugged into a power strip, not from the USB bus in the thread. Maybe the disk takes a couple of minutes to initialize. In any case, I'm not planning on p...

Re: Errors from new external hard drive.
It's a USB 3.0 device plugged into a USB 3.0 PCI expansion card. I didn't mention I have another older USB 3.0 hard drive plugged into that card. It's ext4 and works without problems. Also plugged into the card is a Logitech headset and a wireless mouse dongle. In fstab, the 2 USB drives have the sa...

Errors from new external hard drive. [solved]
fstab.txt I just plugged in a brand new 4 TB USB Western Digital Mybook external hard drive. It came formatted in exfat and seems to work fine. I can read and write to it, at least. But when I boot it produces these error messages and adds 2 minutes to the boot time. Again, it seems to work fine so...

Fun command line tools you may not know about!
Let's face it, the basic Unix/Linux commands are what 40, 50 years old? Surely there are some more modern replacements. I've been mucking about with the Linux command line for 20+ years and have picked up a few fun tools that aren't installed by default: tldr - alternative to man. In case you don't ...

display locks up after screen blank
I am using LM20 Cinnamon, upgraded recently from 19.3 by mintupgrade. Sometimes, when the monitor turns off, I can not get it to turn back on. I had my screensaver set to lock the screen after 5 minutes and the power settings to turn off the monitor after 15 minutes. Most of the time, I move the mou...

Re: Can't log in to Chromium LM20
Thanks for the suggestions folks. Unfortunately installing it via snapd gives me the same 404 error when I try to sign into sync. Trying to install it from the Ubuntu repo breaks the x2go functionality. I've tried chromium --display :50 and chromium --display 50 It gives me the error No protocol spe...

Good Job Linux Mint Team!
I would just like to say thank you for your great job on Mint 20. I have had this computer for almost 10 years and have been using Mint for 9. I don't know how you do it, but this thing seems faster with every upgrade. The mintupgrade process went off without a hitch (except a small Chromium-related...

Can't log in to Chromium LM20 [SOLVED by switching to Chrome]
I'm posting this as a new thread, because I couldn't find it addressed on the other Chromium thread. I use x2go to run remote applications from my workplace's windows machine. Chromium works with this setup, Chrome does not. I have tried installing chromium using the zipfile from appspot and the sai...

Re: Boot LM by default on MacBook
I'm not sure why I kept the recovery partition either. I guess I was afraid of bricking the machine. I think I'll just start from scratch and wipe the whole disk, like you suggest.

Boot LM by default on MacBook
I just installed LM20 on my early-2008 MacBook and it's working great. But I want it to boot LM by default on power-up. I left the boot and recovery partitions in place and added a swap and 2 EXT4 partitions. I added two because the Mac recovery partition was in the middle of the disk for some reaso...

[SOLVED] Re: Best distro for a 2008 Macbook
I'm proudly running LM20 XFCE from my 12-year-old MacBook! It's no speed demon, but it's comparable to the native MacOS and a lot quicker than Windows 10. The function buttons work, the trackpad took a little configuration, but nothing unusual. The power management applet works as expected. I'm quit...

Re: Best distro for a 2008 Macbook
Thanks for the info folks!
Pulegium, that's interesting, putting another SSD in the optical bay. I may look into that.
Thanks for letting me know LMDE is more resource intensive. I will probably install LM 20 when it comes out.

[SOLVED] Best distro for a 2008 Macbook [LM20 XFCE]
I have an early 2008 Macbook that I'm thinking of installing Linux on. Currently it has a malware-infested unsupported version of MacOS X and Windows 10 using Bootcamp. I don't need Windows on it anymore, plus that ran really slowly. I know this isn't helpful, but I don't know what I would use the M...

Re: Add a disk with Windows 10 to a preexisting Mint install
Thanks folks! I'm marking this solved. Unplugging and replugging the drives was more hassle than I would have liked, but it did seem like the safest option. :D I ended up going with Windows 7 32 bit for now. It seems to make a bootable USB on BIOS, you need FAT32. But Windows 10 has a file that's ov...

[SOLVED] Add a disk with Windows 10 to a preexisting Mint install
I have Mint 19.2 installed on an SSD and it is the only OS I have currently installed. There is also an HDD with documents and a USB drive with videos. I'm going to install Windows 10 because I need it for a scanner app and a voice recognition program for work. I have a new SSD that I'm going to add...
