Boy am I glad you had me run those commanss for your trecords. I compared the two and they are both different. In the first command both the hostname, the port, and address are different, while in the second command only the address and port differ ( I only checked those three lines for differences....

simple-scan now reports "unable to connect to scanner". It was working!
I did try to install the independent backend but xsane and simple scan still do not work.

it's cool.... we (you) got it scanning and I am quite happy using simpe-scan. Strange, it would not print if I just typed simple-scan but rather I had to enter the line you gave me.

yes.... simple scan works (thank you so much) but xsane does not. I investigated further and couldn't find airscan and my printer so I don't know what to do.

yeah? xsane doesn't report back the same thing. YOurs said Xsane reports "Failed to open device `brother4:bus2;dev5' Invalid argument", while mine says failed to start scanner:invalid argument
