Re: [SOLVED] Cannot Login (login loop)

Just thought I'd pipe in on this topic... because this is one of those "just-in-case" posts. My son's laptop wasn't logging in. It displayed all the symptoms of a corrupted .ICEauthority/.Xauthority that I've seen. Here's what resolved his problem. I inserted the Linux Mint start-up USB. Fired up ol...

Re: Mint 12 Tips & Tricks Guide (updated Dec 10)

 warning of any kind indicating these tips are for one Desktop Environment? Had this been my tutorial, my first response would be to place a huge warning at the head of the first post before anyone else trips over this. But that's just me. I can see now that was a major oversight and I'm sorry...

Re: Mint 12 Tips & Tricks Guide (updated Dec 10)

Always backup your system before experimenting. :) Always thoroughly test tips for system breakages before posting in a forum. Everything in the guide except the one tip where I write I haven't tested it myself has been tested by me - where do you think the images of the titlebars come from?...

Re: Mint 12 Tips & Tricks Guide (updated Dec 10)

Oh dear! Using Mint 12. But I prefer "Gnome Classic" from the log in menu. I tried this line: gconftool-2 -s -t string /desktop/gnome/shell/windows/button_layout "close, maximize, minimize:" And something went horribly wrong. All title bars have vanished, my choice of desktops went from 4 to 1, Alt-ta...

Re: Evolution Email

I installed this on MInt12 through the software manager. All OK until it came to running the program. It came up all OK but when I clicked on the create new account button it just shut the program down. From this line, my guess is you did: Menu System Tools System Settings User Accounts Would this ...

Re: [Solved] Mint 12 - Browsers make no sounds

PROBLEM : The Creative SoundBlaster card was clearly not the problem. THE HIDDEN : There was something crucial I failed to mention. My /home/bob folder has existed under Ubuntu for a number of versions. I don't put much stock into "upgrading" Ubuntu. Instead I wipe the system (while keeping my /hom...

Pleasure to help. An unusually quiet PC is a bit disconcerting when you're familiar with it speaking.

Re: How Turn on System Sounds in Mint 12?

Assuming you're using the default GNOME for your account: Slow way: Menu > System Tools > System Settings > Sound Fast way: Right click speaker icon, top right and select Sound Settings. The first tab = Sound Effects. Raise the Alert Volume to about 75%. Select your preferred alert sound. You're goo...

Re: [Solved] Mint 12 - Browsers make no sounds

I'm guessing here, but the fact that it works intermittently after reboots suggests that you have a device mapping issue. On some boots the cards are mapped as expected, but on others they may not be (this is completely random at boot). There are a couple of possible solutions to this, but I've onl...

Re: [Solved] Mint 12 - Browsers make no sounds

Upon trying other user accounts on this system, sound works in browsers.

Any suggestion as to what hidden home folder to remove in order to bring sound back?

Re: [Solved] Mint 12 - Browsers make no sounds

Upon rebooting, Firefox went silent again.

Tried something different. Booted by the Mint DVD. Opened the browser, all worked well. Re-installed Mint, logged in, opened the browser, sound failed.

Re: [Solved] Mint 12 - Browsers make no sounds

Solved my problem again. Yay. Feels good to be my own system administrator. Problem is, I'm not entirely sure which solution worked. Neither one did at the time they were performed. But upon rebooting the system, the browser speaks. These were the two system changes done. #1: Opened Synaptic Package...

Re: Messed up existing users -- need help to restore

Found the solution...

Seems that account's .Xauthority was messed up. Renamed it .Xauthority-messedup and started the account, works perfectly.

Thanks all!

[Solved] Messed up existing users -- need help to restore

Hey all, quick question: Just installed Linux Mint 12 on my PC. I've got 7 accounts under Linux. Used: System Settings > User Accounts to create each user. But one user's /home name is a bit different from her screen name. When I input hers, I took the wrong name. I deleted that account, started aga...
