Re: ATI Radeon -help!

I will definitely stick with the open source Radeon driver. Which desktop are you running ? I am running latest version of Cinnamon. I tried Xfce a couple of years ago because the earliest versions of Cinnamon and Mate really gave me a lot of problems. As I recall, Xfce was "zippier," but ...

Re: ATI Radeon -help!

Attention: niowluka I got it to work. Instead of pressing Ctrl+Shift+F1, I pressed Ctrl+ Alt +F1. The terminal logon came up. I followed your instructions, and everything worked. There was one error message during un-installation. It said: "Error! There are no instances of module: fglrx 8.97.10...

Re: ATI Radeon -help!

by niowluka on Sat Jan 10, 2015 11:31 am OK. This should be easy as one, two, three... When you are in logon screen, press Ctrl+Shift+F1. This will take you to a terminal. Log in just as you would normally. Went to logon screen. Pressed Ctrl+Shift+F1. Nothing happened. No terminal. Plugged in a USB...

Re: ATI Radeon -help!

Thanks for answering. I went to this site: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download Went to the section near the bottom titled "Manually Select Your Driver" In the boxes, I chose: Notebook Graphics; Radeon HD Series; Mobility Radeon 4100 Series (I know this is what is on the Toshiba); Linux x...

ATI Radeon -help!

Very happy with 17.1 Rebecca, but the graphics seemed a little sluggish using the open source driver. I am using an old Toshiba laptop with an ATI Radeon 4100 card. Like an idiot I went to their website, downloaded and installed their driver. It installed successfully, BUT when I rebooted my compute...

Re: Question on Calendar?

Vincent, Thanks for the reply. Hopefully this is "down the road." I am not a developer, nor a programmer, but I hope someone picks up on this. In Gnome 2 & 3, the panel calander can not only display Evolution appointments, but also be synced with Google Calander, something I find very ...

Question on Calendar?

In both Gnome 2 (Mint 10 & 11) and in Gnome 3 shell (Mint 12) it is possible to show Evolution appointments on the panel calendar. Is there a way to do this in Cinnamon?

Re: Cinnamon / Gnome 3 performance issues

Just to chime in, I agree with all the other posters. Gnome 3 is very sluggish. Although it works fine, the slowness makes it almost unusable as an everyday desktop. Cinnamon is noticably better, but nowhere near the snappy performance of Gnome 2 on Mint 10 or 11. Hopefully, further Cinnamon develop...

Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels

@mank_in Followed you suggestions (in order). First time I did cinnamon --replace I got all kinds of errors and warnings, mostly related to the gs-metalX-gnome3 theme. Went back into gnome shell, changed the desktop theme from gs-metalX back to default, opened a terminal and did cinnamon --replace a...

Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels

@ mank_in I checked out the page you mentioned. I had previously "uninstalled" the fglrx drivers. Following the instructions on the link I purged what was left of them. The "lspci -nn | grep VGA" command in the terminal says that I am currently using a "Mobility Radeon 4100&...

Re: Cinnamon Not Working - No Panels

Also, no panel here. When I log into Cinnamon I get the desktop icons & wallpaper and that's it. Have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to log out. Can't do anything at all in Cinnamon. Running Toshiba laptop, AMD processor, ATI M860G [Mobility Radeon 4100] graphics. Proprietary drivers (fglrx) are NOT instal...

Re: Continuing problems with Lisa

For anyone having similar problems:

I installed the new Linux kernal and headers 3.0.0-15.25 from the repositories, and it solved both the freeze-ups and panic crashes in Gnome Shell. Still no luck on the fglrx drivers.

Re: Continuing problems with Lisa

Update: For the last 3 days I have been running Mate sessions exclusively. What I have found is that, 1) the screen lock-up problems when running videos disappeared; 2) the panic attacks when unmountiung a USB drive also disappeared. So for some reason, the freeze-ups and crashes only occur under Gn...

Continuing problems with Lisa

1) When playing videos computer locks up and can only be un-frozen with Ctrl-Alt-F1 "sudo service lightdm restart" 2) Unmounting or ejecting an external USB hard drive results in a "panic attack" and crash of computer. 3) Any attempt to activate ATI/AMD fglrx drivers results in s...

Re: ...Opera high and low notes

Back in ancient times I started with Spry Mosaic, then switched to (the original) Netscape Navigator browser. When that became bloatware, I switched to Opera. This was long, long, before Firefox came on the scene. Opera is a terrific browser. One of the things that held back its "usability"...

Re: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" released!

Re: Follow-up on screen lock-up. This continues to plague me. I use the suggested "sudo service lightdm restart" to re-boot the GUI, but the lock-ups now occur several times a day. One thing I have noticed is that the lock-ups always occur when I am playing a video (I subscribe to several ...

Crash with external hard drive

I have a western digital USB external hard drive. When I am done using it and click "Safely remove drive," the computer (Toshiba Satellite) crashes, dumps me in a text screen with a message which reads "panic occurred, switching back to text console." Two things, 1) this never ha...

Re: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" released!

Been fiddling around with Lisa for a week now, and am pleased to say that I actually like it. A number of posts in this forum have been very helpful. It still lacks some functionality and custom-ability, but it is probable that future shell extensions, and improvements in Gnome 3 will resolve all of...
