Thank you anyway. Cinnamon is back to its ~40 secs delay, but I guess I can live with that too

Hi senjoz, thanks for your reply. Sorry to answer just now but I have been away for holidays. Re: Black screen and delay before logging into Cinnamon
Ouch, I really hoped there were some hints in there. I'm afraid boot.log is not going to give you any major insights, unless the absence of [OK] is a valuable clue: [ OK ] Finished Detect the availa… deal with any system changes. [ OK ] Started WPA supplicant. [ OK ] Started Thermal Daemon Service. ...

Re: Black screen and delay before logging into Cinnamon
Wow, you weren't kidding about the quantity of output! It took me a while to scroll all of it, but as you hinted I got a few places where things seem to stop for a while. The first bump (about 6 seconds) was soon after the login: ago 08 09:51:51 Wodan systemd[1054]: Starting Virtual filesystem servi...

Re: Nvidia driver not working until x restart on LM 20.0 cinnamon
Hi there, I had a similar problem in Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3: booting up in a 1024x768 screen with no graphics drivers (apparently) active and the suggestion to install them. I found out that the problem was Secure Boot, activated after installing LM 20, and that I had to create a key and sign the ...

Re: Black screen and delay before logging into Cinnamon
Can we see the output of cat ~/.xsession-errors run just after logging in? Sure thing, here you go, this is just after the log in and before I launched Firefox: dbus-update-activation-environment: setting DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:path=/run/user/1000/bus dbus-update-activation-environment: sett...

Black screen and delay before logging into Cinnamon
Hi guys, I've just installed LM 20 Cinnamon edition on a new partition and made it my main version of LM to use. So far so good, but a couple of days after using it (and installing more software) I started having problems logging in: 1. the boot process seems to be normal although a little slower th...

How to best install Steam client?
Hi all,
writing from a nice and fast Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon install now, I was wondering which is the best way to install the Steam client: via the deb package they offer on the Steam site, or through the normal LM repository?
Thank you in advance,
R

Thanks for the link. I would very much like to help, I've contributed to Linux documentation in the past (Mandrake Linux), but I'm afraid that my knowledge is quite out of date. Too many new things both in hardware and software

Re: Help! Can't boot old install, nor install LM 19.3
Hello deepakdeshp, thank you for your reply. After I tried again this morning, the USB drive with the image booted fine and I managed to install LM 19.3. So all's well and good, but I couldn't understand what happened: I guess after I fiddled with the secure boot settings booting the USB drive in no...

[SOLVED] Help! Can't boot old install, nor install LM 19.3
Hi guys, hope someone can help since it seems I managed to mess up my computer for good :( I added a new SSD to have a little more space, then when I restarted my computer I was faced by a black screen. OK, probably moving around stuff messed up the grub installation, let's try to recover it. Tried ...

Re: How to clean up shared home directory?
Thank you both jglen490 and JoeFootball :) I think I'll try it this way: - have a separate /home for each distro (LM 18.3 and 19.3, possibly Ubuntu and/or other I want to test) - have the minimum necessary in each /home - keep everything else on another partition - link from the latter to each /home...

How to clean up shared home directory?
Hi guys, being a faithful LM Cinnamon user I have at least a couple of LM installations on my main desktop. At the moment I have LM 18.3 which I consider the main working (and stable) OS, LM 19.2 which I've played with in the past (strangely not so stable, plus I miss the middle mouse button menu fo...

Re: Nemo can't open ext4 partition
Hello gittiest personITW (???), I tried your tip and it worked: root can open that partition, so it is definitely accessible. Actually, I also tried to open it as normal user and it worked! So it must have been a glitch in Nemo, which was somehow resolved after n reboots :) Thanks for your help anyw...

[SOLVED] Nemo can't open ext4 partition
Hi all, since I had some unused space on my HDD I merged free space and unused partitions into a new one, formatted it and copied stuff on it. Everything seems to work fine, except that Nemo refuses to open one of the already existing partitions! I can see its content via terminal, I can open it wit...

Re: Cinnamon suddenly very slow and jerky (18.3)
Maybe that (partitions almost full) is true for the root and home partitions? I have room there, other practically full partitions never bothered me. I don't have too many extensions in Firefox (I think :) and they've been the same for about the last six months now. Thanks for your tips in any case!...

Re: Cinnamon suddenly very slow and jerky (18.3)
Unfortunately the issue is coming back every now and then: nothing as bad as described in my original post (sloooow appearance of typed characters, erratic and unusable mouse cursor), but still there especially when using Firefox. I will try the hardware acceleration feature, switching it off in FF,...

Re: Cinnamon suddenly very slow and jerky (18.3)
Thanks for the tip! I tried all of the steps recommended by that article, let's see if it gets better. What buggers me is that this happened abruptly, my desktop was fast and smooth just a few weeks ago. Also, while I only have decent CPU and graphic adapter, I got plenty of memory and the root part...

Cinnamon suddenly very slow and jerky (18.3)
Hi guys, I don't know if it is somehow related to the latest kernel upgrades, but all of a sudden my 18.3 Cinnamon desktop has become quite slow and jerky, with the mouse moving in a really unpleasant way. Is anybody experiencing anything similar? At first I thought that it was Firefox' fault (it to...

Re: HiDpi - Some programs not scaling properly
I am having similar problems on a full HD display (13" physical dimensions): how about Java and Wine programs? I'm not sure how to increase the character size in those.
