Re: SOLVED Brother MFC-8860DN Scanning (Mint 19)

Damn. Suddenly last week the damned scanner stopped working again, and so far nothing seems to fix it. Maybe it's time to just do a fresh install of Mint.

Re: Recurring Mint 19 Issues?

One more thing driving me mad: periodically, for no obvious reason, the whole system will slow to a halt, with the hard drive LED burning non-stop. I think it's connected to Firefox, but System Monitor doesn't show any unusual CPU, Memory, or hard drive use. Again, just something weird that I haven'...

Recurring Mint 19 Issues?

Hi all, this probably overly broad, but am I alone in finding that Mint 19 Cinnamon (AMD64) seems to have more than few odd-ball issues? I've been running Mint for several years (Since Mint 12 back in 2011), and this is the first time that I have had anything but a flawless experience. On my desktop...

Re: Brother MFC-8860DN Scanning (Mint 19)

Hurrah! In my case what finally worked was this (from your link.): I cannot find the Brother Machine. Related Distribution : Ubuntu, LinuxMint, Debian Related Scanner Driver : brscan, brscan2, brscan3 Check if the following directory exist. For 64bit Users: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane For 32bit...

SOLVED Brother MFC-8860DN Scanning (Mint 19)

I'm running the Mint Cinnamon 19 beta. This printer and scanner worked great in Mint 18, but I did fresh install this week and now can't get it to scan. I've downloaded fresh driver/install packages from Brother, and followed the instructions here: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/...

Re: DE or Distro with REAL scrollbars

OK smartasses who apparently don't see the problem in making significant changes to fundamental UI elements, two questions. 1) Again... what problem is solved by disappearing scroll bars ? What do they offer that's so valuable? Still haven't found anyone to answer that question. 2) Are you part of t...

Re: DE or Distro with REAL scrollbars

It's expected behavior because that's how scroll bars worked for a couple of decades until some clever people decided that they would "improve" them. In my use case I spend a lot of time navigating within and editing documents, and moving my hand back and forth from the mouse to the keyboard breaks ...

Re: DE or Distro with REAL scrollbars

Cinnamon-settings->Effects turn of "Overlay scrollbars" and log out and back in. Ok, that does seem to make scroll bars stay put. I'm still faced with the problem that my expected behavior is: Click above or below the slider, and move one page up or down. Instead (at least with a long document in X...

Re: DE or Distro with REAL scrollbars

To date I've had something like a dozen "just do this" suggestions, none of which are "change one setting.". I'll look at it when I'm back at my desktop machine later.

Before I do though, will this restore fully functioning scrollbars across all applications on the system?

Thanks

Barry

Re: DE or Distro with REAL scrollbars

Just expand on last night's post, here's what I wrote over on the POP! OS forums a while back: "I have for the most part found POP to be exactly what I want for a work environment, and have been happy to try and help with bug reports and repeated installs to track down issues. I have promoted the OS...

DE or Distro with REAL scrollbars

I've been using Mint Cinnamon for several years, and mostly have no reason to change, except that I have grown to really despise the stupid gnome disappearing scrollbars. They disrupt my workflow and just plain drive me mad. QUESTION: Just what problem were these things supposed to solve? Can someon...

Re: Installing GIMP 2.10.0 using Flatpak

Over on the POP_OS reddit I was given this, and it worked just dandy.

Just follow those steps: https://flatpak.org/setup/Ubuntu/
Then: flatpak install https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org. ... flatpakref

Worked flawlessly on my POP machine.

[SOLVED] Installing GIMP 2.10.0 using Flatpak

Can someone tell me how to actually install GIMP is 2.10.0? I've managed to get by just fine for years with Synaptic and APTbut GIMP is determined that I use flatpak. I understand WHY someone invented Flatpak, but I can't for the life of me make it work either my Mint box or this POP_OS laptop. GIMP...

Re: [SOLVED] Freeze on Sleep

The whole freeze issue seemed to keep coming back. Ultimately what seems to have fixed it (few weeks, fingers crossed) was removing the Logitech wireless mouse and replacing it with a corded one. Strange thing is that the wireless keyboard, using the same dongle, is just fine. Will update if anythin...

Re: Disappearing Scrollbars. sigh.

Thanks all. "Overlay Scroll Bars" is one of those things that's not particularly clear until after you know about it. YMMV but I rely a lot on the scroll bars when navigating large documents or pages. They are a fast way to see where you are in the overall document (where is the slider bar?) , and r...

Disappearing Scrollbars. sigh.

I've spent a couple of hours searching for a solution with no luck. Just did a fresh install of Cinnamon 18.1 on an older Dell laptop. It works great except for one thing: the infamous disappearing scroll bars and up/down arrows. Nemo being the case in point. Can someone confirm that there really is...

Re: [SOLVED] I HAVE HAD IT! Linux/Podcasts/Android...

Just to close this out, I'll agree that Podcast Addict is pretty impressive. Lord knows it has about 500 more options and settings than any person will ever need. If you need to fine tune, REALLY fine tune every aspect of your pod listening experience, and if you appreciate a superb set of tools for...

Partition mounted multiple times

(This may stem from a series of forced reboots in recent weeks while figuring out another issue.) Somehow I seem to have multiple mounts for a single partition (see screen grab) The folder "PICTURES" also appears as "PICTURES1" and "PICTURES2" and items that download to one may not be accessible if ...

Re: [SOLVED] I HAVE HAD IT! Linux/Podcasts/Android...

I have it working now, but wow, the interface is downright crazy. Two hamburger menus - one on the left, and one on the right - WAY too many settings and choices. I thought that I had it set up the way I wanted it, and thought that it had downloaded the podcasts, jumped in the car hit "Play" and was...

Re: Freeze on Sleep

I'm prepared to call this one "Closed." I've been back with the original mouse and keyboard (Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard Model K330/M215) for week with no problems. I'm assuming that the kernel upgrade fixed the problem. For newbies, go to: Update Manager View | Linux Kernels Scroll down an...
