Re: Security Flaw in Guest Login

This is on Canonical's security tracking site: http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2017/CVE-2017-8900.html It seemss like they have been slowly introducing elements of SystemD since 15.10, but "session handling moved from upstart to systemd in Ubuntu 16.10", based on the above security ...

Re: Security Flaw in Ubuntu Guest Login

@Lucap, I also brought this up and it was brought to my attention that this security flaw only affects Ubuntu 16.10 and 17.04, while Mint continues to be based on Ubuntu 16.04. So, I think we are safe for now and hopefully this will be fixed upstream before Ubuntu 18.04 is released next year.

VPN using Mint 12

Greetings. I cannot connect to my VPN in Mint 12. I set it up through network manager as I normally would. Had no issues in prior releases. Does anyone have an openvpn VPN connection working in Mint 12? I was unable to resolve this issue through the IRC. Errors: ** (nm-applet:29735): WARNING **: _nm...

Re: How to install new icon theme set with mint 5

FYI, it is easy to fix an iconset that is a .tar or .zip file that will not install or is considered invalid. Just open the .tar/.zip file with Archive Manager, then click 'File' and 'Save As'. In the bottom corner where it says 'All Supported Files', click the dropdown and select 'Tar compressed wi...

Re: Unofficial Post Your Linux Mint Desktop Thread

@feed3, So, are you able to run everything in AWN like it would normally work on the default panel? If so, was there anything special you had to do to get it to work properly?

Re: Unofficial Post Your Linux Mint Desktop Thread

AWN question. I see a lot of desktops using AWN. Yesterday I gave a neighbor a computer with Mint 8. I thought I would show him how easy it was to install a dock and set it up. I installed AWN through package manager. There were no icons other than the preferences. I tried dragging Firefox down from...

Re: Mint 8 iso, Virtualbox, and Guest Additions

frank392: The machine I am using is running Ubuntu 8.10. mick: I think you may have partially answered my question, sort of. You are at least ruling out Guest Additions as a solution. I am just using the .iso file directly without an install. The problem is screen resolution. I just think there must...

Mint 8 iso, Virtualbox, and Guest Additions

I'm trying to run Mint 8 directly using the .iso in VirtualBox. To do this, I simply added the LinuxMint-8.iso to the CD/DVD Images in the Virtual Media Manager and connect to it via the CD/DVD Device Attributes under the IDE Controller under Storage in the Machine settings. I have no problem runnin...

Re: Almost 2 years no HP printer Frustrating

Did you try installing hplip-gui? It will put an HP icon in one of the menus (I forget which) and it will guide you through installing your printer.

Re: Supporting Linux Mint

@ feed3 I read in the forums that the live USB only acts as a live CD and that the extra space is only for your settings and files. She told me it said that there were 215 updates, she clicked update, let it go, and when she came back her system stopped responding. She said it did not come back afte...

Re: Supporting Linux Mint

I recently had a friend with an XP, P4, 768 MB Ram machine that was running slowly. I suggested Mint and gave her a live USB. She had it for one day before it broke. Apparently, you cannot install the software updates on a live USB, even with persistence. Now she has lost interest and would rather I...

What worked for me was installing hplip-gui and then running HPLIP Toolbox in System -> Preferences.

Re: Helena KDE ideas

@Boo

I like the way Mint Main and Fluxbox have a similar color scheme and style. I was expecting Mint KDE to have the same consistency, not blue. To me it looks more like Mandriva. I realize everything is customizable, but I really like the "Mint" grayish-green look.

Re: Problems Installing hplip to Scan with Photosmart 2710

Sweet! Still using Lubuntu 10.04, I was successful using rec9140's suggestion. I installed hplip-gui, and ran the HPLIP Toolbox, in this case under 'Preferences'. The GUI had an option to set up the device. It found my wireless printer on the network, worked its magic, and I was able to scan! I obvi...

Re: Problems Installing hplip to Scan with Photosmart 2710

Ok. Just for fun I am running the new release candidate for Lubuntu 10.04. (Linux Mint 8 Fluxbox is still downloading upstairs.) It is actually impressively responsive. GIMP takes about 4 seconds to load on a P4 3 GHz with 2 GB of RAM. Anyhow, I tried installing hplip from hplipopensource and I even...

Re: Problems Installing hplip to Scan with Photosmart 2710

@ MaddogF16 and rec9140, Thank you for the suggestions. I will try them when I return home after the weekend and, as you will see below, after I reinstall Mint 8 KDE on a larger flash drive. @ rec9140, Concerning the Live USB, I'm pretty sure I just used usb-creator from the Ubuntu repositories. It ...
