keyboard layout for login prompt

Help I set up Canada French Keyboard (CA) as the only Keyboard layout. In terminal mode, it is respected, and after a successful cinnamon/mate, it is respected. but when I try the GUI login, the layout presented is US. It matters because characters like # ! are in the wrong location, and characters ...

Re: Need a script to replace characters in filenames recursi

I figured it out after some research. FAT partitions don't allow certain characters. I was copying to a FAT32 partition. Caja wouldn't let me paste to Ext4 partitions without root access, and doing a paste from root with Caja often corresponded with a memory leak in either the plugin manager in Fir...

console keyboard layout is not correct layout

Doing the English installation for Cinnamon 16 x 64 bit, the installation starts with English USA keyboard layout. Subsequently I eliminate the USA Keyboard layout and select the Canadian French layout. In Graphical mode, the French layout is correct. The graphic terminal mode is correct, but the tt...

Would like to be able to reorder three Cinnamon buttons

Lowest to highest, logout, switch lockscreen, poweroff. Currently it is shutdown, logout and lock screen I like increasing order of importance. I would even accept lockscreen, logout and shutdown. The rearrangement could be put into the screen saver settins or even to Themes, (other settings)

Drop Down Termnal

This is a feature that is a MUST for cinnamon. If you use Gnome, then this extension is worth everything it is called "Drop Down Terminal" by zzrough I use it with Gnome. Re:

I know how to login as root, but without being in root how would one do something like adding XMMS skins to usr/share/xmms/skins? Or easily delete a bunch of unwanted wallpapers in usr/share/backgrounds (can only do 1 at a time in Desktop Background menu)? When you deal with many files, that you re...

Installation process must ask for boot drive

I spent a long time recovering my system after Mint15 installation. Fortunately, nothing was lost. Here is the situation. I have 4 disks, and /dev/sdd is the one I reserved for Mint15 KDE version. During the installation, I selected /dev/sdd. Mint recognized it, but the installation program did not ...

Mint needs to allow root access from GUI interface

Someone, without thinking things through, decided that root access should only be available via command line or from a regular user account and perrmissions in sudo. Wake up people, Other distributions recognized that moving and managing files via a GUI interface is safer than using the command line...

Re: Installation Instructions Are Incomplete

I have other operating systems on my /dev/sda , /dev/sdb and /sdc. My /dev/sdd was emptied and had only an empty partition. I took the liveCD for Mint15, and pointed it to /dev/sdd (an empty disk of 250gigs) Even though I pointed the installer to /dev/sdd and Mint15 was installed on /dev/sdd, for so...

logon greeter screen

Can you please tell me how to configure the logon screen so that the names of the users are visible? It is not necessarily more secure to only have a single name. Can we have the type of greeter where I click on the name, and then enter the password. As it is in Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Suse? Please ...

What us migration procedure Mint 13 to Mint 14?

I have Mint 13 64bit. I know I can download Mint 14, wipe out Mint 13, but I would really like a application in Mint 13, that would move me to Mint 14.

Does such an application exist?

Re: Fedora Capitulates To MS

Matthew Garrett has made a correction in his statement that might make this more palatable: The last option wasn't hugely attractive, but is probably the least worst. Microsoft will be offering signing services through their sysdev portal. It's not entirely free (there's a one-off $99 fee to gain a...

Can grub do mbr backup before replacement

I have a two hard disk system. /dev/hda has xp, and /dev/hdb has our favorite. I entered the bios, switched the boot drive to /dev/sdb, and proceeded to do the installation. At some point grub asked about installing the mbr to replace or create an mbr, and I did not pay close attention, and said yes...
