Re: What desktop wireless card should I buy?

Thank you, that sounds good. But, I am having a hard time figuring out which cards have the intel wifi chips on them.

A reviewer said that this one works in Ubuntu right out of the box though.

What desktop wireless card should I buy?

I just installed Linux Mint 18 on a Dell desktop, and I'm wondering if I should get an internal PCI card or a USB one? Does Linux Mint work great with one brand of wireless card over another? I use my cell phone hot spot to connect to the internet with my other computer, so I will need to use the sa...

Re: New EFI boot manager available: rEFInd

I recently updated my MacBook Pro to 10.9.1, and had to reinstall rEFInd. But when I did, it has a problem where it can still see that the Linux Mint partition is there, but displays the error. http://forums.linuxmint.com/download/file.php?id=16185&t=1 I can boot from the Live CD, and I can find the...

Re: rEFInd and Macbook Air

I updated my Macbook Pro 2010 to 10.9.1 and it did the same thing. But, while it didn't delete the Linux Mint partition doing the upgrade and re-install of rEFInd, it erased the link that it needs to boot Linux Mint and couldn't find the linux bootloader...

Re: Linux Mint 14 hangs for a few seconds

I just tried Fedora 18 live CD, and it did the same thing. Did something change in the kernel from Linux Mint 9 to 14? Maybe it is my arch nemisis X.org. Did the default graphics drivers change or how they interact with nVidia cards with no nVidia driver insalled?

Re: Linux Mint 14 hangs for a few seconds

I used the Ubuntu Live CD yesterday and it does the same thing. I don't know what is going on with it. But I will be able to search for more information now.

Re: Linux Mint 14 hangs for a few seconds

I tried the LiveDVD of the KDE version last night and the same thing happens. It also happens on a different HDTV that I have hooked up.

I will try out Ubuntu next to see if it does the same thing.

Re: Linux Mint 14 hangs for a few seconds

I tried doing a few things I read from other people on-line, and can say that making an xorg.conf file doesn't work (had to boot up the DVD to delete the file). It does have a problem with the external monitor when I use the Live DVD too. I would have thought that Linux Mint would have come with the...

Re: Linux Mint 14 hangs for a few seconds

I have updated everything and installed Bumblebee nVidia drivers, and while it doesn't do the main problem anymore... I am only able to get a 1600x1200 resolution and no external monitor is showing up at all.

Aren't external monitors and 1920x1080 resolution pretty standard now?

Re: Linux Mint 14 hangs for a few seconds

After testing some more, this only does it when the HDMI cable is attached to the Macbook. Even if the external monitor is off, the pausing happens. Although the laptop screen does not turn to black. It didn't matter if I booted with the HDMI cable unplugged and then waited until I was logged in bef...

Linux Mint 14 hangs for a few seconds

I just installed Linux Mint 14 64 bit Cinnamon on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro. I also have it connected to an external 1080p 37" HDTV over DVI. When I log in, everything works fine, then the external screen goes off, CPU core #3 goes to 100%, and the mouse moves very slow for 5 seconds or so. Then every...

Upgrading/reinstalling Linux Mint

I currently run Linux Mint 9 on my Macbook Pro in it's own partition with rEFit as a bootloader, it has no data on it now after a few months of backing up everything. Can I download Linux Mint 14 on DVD and upgrade it from within Linux Mint 9? Do I need to boot from DVD and overwrite the Linux parti...

What desktop environment would you pick for non-techies?

There are 4 different choices on the Download page, and I am trying to figure out which one would be best for my parents to use. It has to be simple and stable. They will be running Firefox, Open Office, Google Earth, and music/movies. I won't get into my personal beliefs on the issue here, but let'...

Re: No sound in Linux Mint 9 on Macbook Pro 2010 (6.1)

Code: Select all

apt-get install linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic
This will get the sound to work, but it will kill the wireless driver. And since I don't have wired internet access until I go to work on Monday, I won't know if it is just a simple fix to re-install the wireless driver.

No sound in Linux Mint 9 on Macbook Pro 2010 (6.1)

I am having problems getting my soundcard to work on my new Macbook Pro (mid-2010, 6.1, 17") with the 64-bit version of Linux Mint 9. I have tried turning up the sound in alsamixer, adding a line to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf options snd_hda_intel model=mbp61 (although I'm not sure if...

Linux Mint on my new Macbook Pro

It appears I have three choices (the Live CD method does not work very well for me) to use Linux on my Mac. I have not determined which one is the right one yet. I would basically like to have a Live CD experience (no settings are saved, and it is a fresh install each time you boot up, but usb drive...

Re: Another screen resolution mess

I'm not sure if I gave the correct answers or not, but it didn't work. Well, actually there is a list of possible resolutions that goes up to 1920x1200. But, 1920x1080 isn't there. Should I focus my efforts on preparing my system (Linux Mint 4) to upgrade to Linux Mint 7 instead of fixing this? It d...

Re: Another screen resolution mess

It still has the problem where 1920x1080 isn't an option. It has 1920x1440 and 1920x1200 (I picked 1920x1200). I am running 1280x1024 right now, but my monitor says it is 1360x1024.

I'm a little busy right now, but I'll restart it in a few hours to see if it fixes things.

Thanks

Another screen resolution mess

I'll save the ranting about having screen resolution issues/graphics driver issues for the past 15 years in Linux... But, it has happened again, and I'm not sure what is going on. Everything was fine for months and months running on my 37" LCD at 1920x1080. Now, it looks like the intel graphics driv...
