Re: Positive Opinion about Linux Mint Xfce

@rickNS: Thanks for the follow-up. I went back to my VM for Linux Mint 21.1 MATE and after some toggling, I found that you are indeed correct about being able to show multiple monitors with MATE. It is also possible to select a given monitor as the primary. However, at least in the VM, I have been u...

Re: Positive Opinion about Linux Mint Xfce

I value the following: management of multiple displays, including being able to place desktop icons on any of the screens; ease of adding useful applets to the panel(s), such as monitors for per-core activity, network activity, and thermal readings; as well as ample customization options ranging fr...

Re: Positive Opinion about Linux Mint Xfce

I have used Xfce versions of many distros, far too navy to remember them all, and I'm surprised that users see so many differences between them; to me, Xfce is Xfce whether it's on Mint Xubuntu, Debian Sid, Arcolinux or any other distro. OK, the panel may be in a different place and the wallpaper w...

Positive Opinion about Linux Mint Xfce

The Linux Mint website describes their Xfce in a somewhat negative way, as follows: "Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment. It doesn’t support as many features as Cinnamon or MATE, but it’s extremely stable and very light on resource usage." My opinion of the Linux Mint implementation ...

Re: I want a really black theme for xed

Alternatively, if you like xed's Oblivion theme otherwise, just make a copy of it and edit the background color. Copy oblivion.xml from /usr/share/gtksourceview-3.0/styles go to /home folder View > Show hidden files open .config folder if xed folder is not there, create it, then open xed folder if ...

Guide: Installing DSV 2021 on Mint or Ubuntu

This is a guide for installing the free molecular viewer, Biovia Discovery Studio Viewer 2021 (Biovia DSV 2021) on a computer running Linux Mint 20.1 or Ubuntu 20.04. This procedure worked for me, but "your mileage may vary". There are no doubt improvements that could be made to this proce...

Cannot boot with Nvidia driver and USB-C or DP

Recently, I found that I could not boot with Linux Mint 20.1 64-bit Xfce and the most recent Nvidia drivers, e.g., anything newer than 460.73.02, when the computer was connected to a monitor with either USB-C or DP. If connected with HDMI, there was no problem. Other symptoms reported that involve t...

Dual-Boot Linux Mint or Ubuntu with Windows 10 Installed Last

This is a guide on how to set up a dual-boot Linux/Windows computer by installing Windows after Linux has already been installed. The usual procedure for dual-booting Linux and Windows is to install Windows first. If Linux is already installed and you then install Windows, the Linux Grub file will b...

Re: Enable locating desktop icons on any monitor

Thanks for the tip. This is useful to know, although I would also like the process to be automatic, as is now apparently the case with Xfce 4.14.

Re: Enable locating desktop icons on any monitor

Hi Hypersphere. To my surprise, 4.14 is on the roadmap for Mint 19.3. Source Wow! Thanks for pointing this out! It would be great to have Xfce 4.14 integrated into LM 19.3 so that users of this distro will not need to add a PPA. Indeed, adding the PPA to LM 19.2 Xfce has caused some problems with p...

Re: Enable locating desktop icons on any monitor

I was very glad to see the announcement of the release of Xfce 4.14. One of the new features is the ability to have the desktop icons appear on the primary monitor. Finally, it will be possible to have the desktop icons on the center or right-hand monitor in a triple-monitor setup. Unfortunately, Li...

Install DSV2019 on Mint 19.1 or Ubuntu 18.04

This is a guide on how to install Biovia Discovery Studio Visualizer 2019 on Linux Mint 19.1 64-bit (based on Ubuntu 18.04 640bit LTS). I am also using the Xfce Desktop Environment. In the following steps, replace "username" with the name of your home directory. This also assumes that you ...

I mostly use Xfce anyway. Everything in Xfce works for me. The only thing Cinnamon does better is to enable placing desktop icons on any display in a multi-monitor setup.

Re: Xfce Multiple Monitors Desktop Icons and Files

Thanks, but ARandR did not help. The issue is that Xfce sees multiple monitors as a single large display, so that the desktop icons always fly over the far left-hand monitor. I hope that the Xfce developers will solve this problem in the next release. It has been solved, at least to some extent, in ...

Re: Cinnamon over XFCE; Worth it?

I much prefer Xfce over Cinnamon. The Mint implementation of Xfce is beautiful and functional right out of the box, and I can easily add the panel applets that I need. Cinnamon still has limited choices for panel applets that actually work properly. Another thing I don't like about Cinnamon is the &...

Weather applet not working in Cinnamon Panel

The weather applet is not working in the Cinnamon panel. I think that the underlying weather service is no longer operational.

Could the Cinnamon panel developers get a different weather applet that works?

Installed MS Online Office in Linux Mint 19 Xfce

My favorite computing platform is Linux Mint 64-bit Xfce. I am currently on version 19. However, there are times when I need to run Windows applications, especially for collaborative projects. Although LibreOffice ought to suffice, some colleagues insist on using MS Office applications. Because of t...

The following steps corrected the problem: 1. sudo ln -sfr /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa* /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/s...
