Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

From http://kroah.com/log/blog/2018/01/06/meltdown-status/ : If you rely on any other kernel tree other than 4.4, 4.9, or 4.14 right now, and you do not have a distribution supporting you, you are out of luck. The lack of patches to resolve the Meltdown problem is so minor compared to the hundreds o...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

sdibaja, those are quite my feelings, too!  I also have a quite long list.  I just spent many hours during the holidays to set up a fresh machine so I feel at home again with it like before… and then it must work.  I do not want to repeat this again in April for LMDE3, so I do hope the will be an us...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

xenopeek, LMDE2 Mate is a quite stable system and I do like it. Kudos to all those who made it!  I have it installed and am thus (partially) responsible for it on about thirteen machines. My main problem is that it is now rather outdated, being still based on oldstable Jessie, and this really does c...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

The “rolling release approach” based on a fairly pure Debian Testing as a good compromise between stability and cutting edge was the main incentive for me to start using LMDE.  And I don't quite like Ubuntu, but I do like the plain productivity Mate desktop.  Over the years I have noticed LMDE being...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

This is getting urgent…  many projects seem to have dropped support of Jessie in the last few months!  For instance I cannot install qtox nor ring anymore. I have just finished setting up a new LMDE2 / Mate machine which took several days to complete my long checklist of personal additions/settings ...

[SOLVED] Re: Howto get video hardware acceleration on Intel?

YESSS!  Trytip, your last link showed me the light:  I had kernel and some drivers from backports, but then xserver-xorg-video-intel must be from backports, too!  This solved the vainfo error, now MPV ran with HW accel. (The hwdec=vaapi entry in mpv.conf is needed, too.)  For VLC libvdpau-va-gl1 fro...

trytip, thank you, I tried this mpv.conf, but it does not work. Same error, from mpv's stderr: libva info: VA-API version 0.39.4 libva info: va_getDriverName() returns -1 libva error: va_getDriverName() failed with unknown libva error,driver_name=(null) [vaapi] vaInitialize(): unknown libva error VO...

Re: Howto get VLC hardware acceleration on Intel?

Afaik, in LMDE2 there is no Driver Manager like in Ubuntu-based Mint. i965-va-drive is the GPU driver: $ apt show i965-va-driver […] Description: VAAPI driver for Intel G45 & HD Graphics family The VA-API (Video Acceleration API) enables hardware accelerated video decode/encode at various entry-...

Re: Howto get mpv hardware acceleration on Nvidia?

Huh? this is LMDE viz Debian Ed., not Ubuntu, hence rather no “PPA method”? I had installed nvidia 387.34 via sgfxi, which is in my experience very competent in fixing Nvidia driver problems. But here seems to be something wrong, I just now noticed inxi's »GLX Renderer: N/A GLX Version: N/A«. I rera...

Howto get mpv hardware acceleration on Nvidia?

Oh well… same problem other way round, now on the older i5-4570 machine I just upgraded to a 4K UHD screen with a MSI GeForce GT 1030 2G LP OC, LMDE2 Mate, proprietary drivers via sgfxi. On this machine vlc runs fine, ≈6 % CPU at FHD, ≈70% CPU at 4K UHD. But mpv / mplayer / totem do not run at all… ...

[SOLVED] Howto get video hardware acceleration on Intel?

I'm now nearly through setting up LMDE2 Mate on a Lenovo T450s 20BWS33U00 with an i7-5600U and 1920x1080 FHD screen. I have kernel and valib* from jessie-backports. One thing that doesn't work yet is hardware decoding for VLC and xplayer: playing a FHD video they stutter and need >200 % CPU. Firefox...

Re: AMD RX550 UHD on LMDE?

Well, I've given up on the RX550 and bought an MSI GeForce GT 1030 2G LP OC.
Using the proprietary Nvidia driver via sgfxi, all is fine and running now.
Wanting to avoid those proprietary drivers was my reason for choosing the RX550 in the first place… sigh.

AMD RX550 UHD on LMDE?

I've now gone and switched from my big old dual Eizo CAD screens on a NVIDIA GF119 [GeForce GT 610] to a large UHD 3840x2160 screen on an inexpensive Sapphire Radeon RX550 with Display Port. Using LMDE2 with Kernel: 4.9.0-0.bpo.2-amd64 from jessie-backports. My needs are hires CAD and office, no gam...

Re: mintUpdate pulling 4.9 kernel ??

Huh?  You're sure?  The last line in that error message reads —  W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. …old ones used instead…  At that point, I can only close the message and mintupdate lists the proposed updates. (Well, at least here I should hav...

Re: mintUpdate pulling 4.9 kernel ??

xenopeek:  Thank you for your time!  You're right, of course.  This would explain what happened. Only, I can't remember seeing such an error popup with many lines when this happened.  I see them sometimes, mostly with a single line, then postponing the update.  My sister also thinks there were no su...

Re: mintUpdate pulling 4.9 kernel ??

Now I've heard of another identical incident:  By chance at the same time and from the same ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de mirrors, my sister's notebook also upgraded everything from backports.  My Start-Date (from /var/log/apt/history.log) was 2017-09-12 10:08:44 ;  hers was 2017-09-12 10:01:43 .  There ...

Re: mintUpdate pulling 4.9 kernel ??

Comparing to other LMDE machines, /etc/apt/preferences.d/official-package-repositories.pref is missing here. Digging in the backups I see that it never was there — this one is an LMDE installation from 2012, upgraded to Betsy in 2015, updated continually. Should I copy official-package-repositories....

Re: mintUpdate pulling 4.9 kernel ??

What is in the files in the /etc/apt/preferences.d/ directory? And for example what is the output for this command on one of the upgraded package you shared: apt policy gnome-commander-data Looks quite normal so far: root@cad1:/etc/apt/preferences.d# ls -l total 4 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 61 Nov 25 2...
