[SOLVED (sort of)] LMDE6 mintupgrade and winehq
I’ve got some machines with LMDE5 and wine installed according to winehq’s instructions: wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key sudo mv winehq.key /usr/share/keyrings/winehq-archive.key wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/debian/dists/bullseye/winehq-bullseye.sources sudo mv wi...

Re: Some apps crash Cinnamon on Acer Aspire 5 A514-55
Thank you, SMG! I wasn’t able to find any error reports of these crashs. Anyway, just last week LMDE6 was released and I have now upgraded this machine via mintupgrade, and then — apt install -t bookworm-backports linux-headers-amd64 linux-image-amd64 apt install -t bookworm-backports firmware-misc-...

LMDE6 mintupgrade deletes some start menu items
I just began upgrading my LMDE5 machines (German locale) to LMDE6 using mintupgrade. On some I had created my own start menu folders called for instance „1 Meine“ containing mainly entries for wine applications. (The name contains a space character… hmm?) After the upgrade, that menu folder is gone ...

[Solved (by LMDE6)] Some apps crash Cinnamon on Acer Aspire 5 A514-55
I’ve got here an Acer Aspire 5 A514-55 NX.K5BEG.006 with an Intel i7-1255U and Intel graphics. (And a Dell USB-C docking hub, but that does not affect this problem here.) After installing LMDE5 Elsie and apt install -t bullseye-backports linux-headers-6.1.0-0.deb11.7-amd64 apt install -t bullseye-ba...

[Solved] Touchpad doesn’t work on Acer Aspire 5
I’m struggling with several issues (audio, graphics, wifi, USB-C Dock…) while installing LMDE5 on an brand new Acer Aspire 5, Model A514-55 NX.K5BEG.006 . Probably shouldn’t have chosen an Acer… One issue was I couldn’t get the touchpad working. I tried a lot of things until I noticed that small ico...

Re: Microphone is detected as if it were a speaker.
It is a laptop. There is only one plug which is meant for a headset with a microphone These combined plugs have a fourth ring to connect the microphone. If you plug in only a microphone, having a jack with only two or three rings, it will electrically connect to the headphone amplifier output which...

Re: Boot problem with Plymouth
Well, that’s curious… After successfully booting in recovery mode, I did — apt reinstall plymouth which demanded first due to unfinished things an — sudo dpkg --configure -a Then the repeated apt reinstall plymouth succeeded and pulled an older 4.19.0-14 kernel…? A subsequent sudo apt-get install -f...

Re: Boot problem with Plymouth
Took a while since it does not boot anymore… I had first to download and prepare a LMDE4 x32 boot stick. That one did now also show the flickering logo… huh? In recovery mode it boots fine. I also ran memtest84+ V5.31b, no errors. Here is the output of inxi -Fxz : System: Host: mint Kernel: 4.19.0-...

[SOLVED] Boot problem with Plymouth
I have a faithful old EeePC 901 I still use occasionally, running a current LMDE4 x686+PAE with Mate. After a recent update, it seemed stuck while booting, screen flickering between the green LMDE logo and lots of lines Failed to start — Show Plymouth Boot Screen. and some more warnings I do not rec...

Re: Gecko freezes permanently
Now that’s funny… Intending to follow your tip, I went back to my notebook which I had left running with no browser open for half an hour. Since I did not find this key network.http.http3.enabled in prefs.js, I started up Firefox again — and it worked normal again, without changing anything. Huh? St...

Gecko freezes permanently
This morning, on my notebook with an up-to-date LMDE installation, I was browsing heise.de when Firefox suddenly stopped responding and the fan turned up. Closing Firefox did not slow the fan; top then showed GeckoMain stuck at 100% CPU. Killed GeckoMain. Restarted Firefox — at once the same. Killed...

Lid switch is ignored after update
I have upgraded several machines from LMDE3 to 4 following the tutorial, mostly without serious issues. But on one old eeePC, since after this upgrade the lid switch is now ignored. I had set power management to Hibernate on lid close, which was working on LMDE3. Suspending or hibernating via start ...

Re: Thunderbird 79.2 - ETA ?
TB 78 introduces an (for me) important change from Enigmail / GnuPG add-on to TB-integrated OpenGPG. 78.2 was not yet quite ready and therefore not released for automatic updates. 78.3 is now deemed ready and was yesterday 2020-09-24 released for automatic updates. Any idea when it will appear in Mi...

Re: LMDE4 breaks Jitsi
Seems that Jitsi Desktop has problems with Java >8. Luckily Java8 is also installed in LMDE4, just not easily selectable (update-alternatives would change it for all apps). My kludge for the moment is to edit /usr/bin/jitsi and change the javabin variable: #javabin=`which java` javabin=/usr/lib/jvm/...

[Solved] LMDE4 breaks Jitsi
I just upgraded a machine from LMDE3 to LMDE4 following https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2475 . The upgrade process went smooth, but it left several things broken. One of them is my Jitsi Desktop application which I do need: It hangs on startup, throwing a LOT of messages, starting with...

Well... there's kind of hackish way to upgrade LMDE 2 MATE to LMDE 3 Cinnamon+MATE... https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3635#comment-145312 https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3635#comment-145378 Actually, no need to install Cinnamon before the upgrade... dealing with the mint-info + mint-user-guide combo is...
