Re: Please provide Thunderbird 52.9.1 Update

Yes, it's just arrived.  The simple way, by retiring TB from the Mint repos, thus freeing the Debian repos. A little problem is that the binary has now moved:  from /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird to /usr/bin/thunderbird → /usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird.  So user–modified scripts and links may need t...

Re: Please provide Thunderbird 52.9.1 Update

Thank you!
I understand most work is going into LMDE3 right now (and I'm eagerly awaiting that).
But this also affects security updates for all normal LMDE2 installations…

Re: Please provide Thunderbird 52.9.1 Update

That was clear:  the Mint team set a higher priority on its own packages (branding, sponsoring) which is alright so far. The proper fix is also obvious:  Mint should then provide the current version, hence my request. Some workarounds come to mind, but they are not the proper fix and require manual ...

Re: AMD RX550 UHD on LMDE?

Wow.  19 steps including compiling a newer kernel… respect! Thank you, but I think I'll stay with my current Nvidia.
Mind you, only the RX550 seems to need Mesa >= 17.1 because of an oversight in the Radeon driver…

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

I've seen in the blog that LMDE3 is now expected in June (2018?) — I really hope that Clem & the team will achieve this: I do like LMDE (Mate!) and I do appreciate the effort put into it, I'm not at all thrilled at the thought to switch to another dist.  It is just that ever more problems come up wi...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

The critical part of that quote is the and you do not have a distribution supporting you bit. ;) The Debian oldstable team still supports the 3.16 kernel, so fixes should be pushed out to Debian 8, and LMDE 2, soon. Well, the 3.16 kernel patches have arrived; but I still don*t see the patched intel...

Re: Atril/Xreader does not display www.geos.ed.ac.uk/homes/thompson/envmag/Envmag_4_5.pdf

Well, that's nice to hear that newer versions work.  Unfortunately LMDE is still stuck at Debian Jessie and Mate 1.18, no simple way to get updates. Another example with very similar behaviour, also a scanned book (9 MB / 395 pages):  http://mirror.thelifeofkenneth.com/lib/electronics_archive/Siemen...

See https://github.com/mate-desktop/atril/issues/291 , the Mate people sent me back to Mint since it seems a distro problem: wget www.geos.ed.ac.uk/homes/thompson/envmag/Envmag_4_5.pdf atril Envmag_4_5.pdf xreader Envmag_4_5.pdf Tested on several LMDE2 Mate installations, old updated and brand new o...

Re: [SOLVED] My Sierra Wireless EM7345 4G LTE drives me crazy!

Well, that's a funny thing:  Looking at several LMDE machines of different installation ages (from first LMDE upgraded to LMDE2, to recent bare installations from 2017-01 iso), I find machines with symlinks /etc/resolv.conf → /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf and also ones with no /run/resolvconf/resolv.c...

Re: Cant add mobile broadband connection

A bit late, but nevertheless:  With quite some effort I got my Sierra EM7345 to work. From https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=239&t=262003&p=1416825#p1416825 : The EM7345 seems to be infamous for buggy firmware, one should install the latest, V1.2 seems essential.  Unfortunately this needs...

Re: My Sierra Wireless EM7345 4G LTE drives me crazy!

Just connected this machine to another wired LAN — also connected with no access. Some digging and comparing to an older machine showed that here /etc/resolv.conf was a regular file, dating from the day of installation and containing static data from that first connection. (That was wired LAN, with ...

[SOLVED] My Sierra Wireless EM7345 4G LTE drives me crazy!

I've got a nice Lenovo T450s Thinkpad with an internal Sierra Wireless EM7345 4G LTE modem.  I've installed LMDE2 Mate and set everything up, Kernel and some graphics stuff from jessie-backports.  As a last step I wanted to set up Mobile Broadband (with AldiTalk/Medion Mobile) and I just can't get i...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

From http://kroah.com/log/blog/2018/01/06/meltdown-status/ : If you rely on any other kernel tree other than 4.4, 4.9, or 4.14 right now, and you do not have a distribution supporting you, you are out of luck. The lack of patches to resolve the Meltdown problem is so minor compared to the hundreds o...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

xenopeek, LMDE2 Mate is a quite stable system and I do like it. Kudos to all those who made it!  I have it installed and am thus (partially) responsible for it on about thirteen machines. My main problem is that it is now rather outdated, being still based on oldstable Jessie, and this really does c...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

The “rolling release approach” based on a fairly pure Debian Testing as a good compromise between stability and cutting edge was the main incentive for me to start using LMDE.  And I don't quite like Ubuntu, but I do like the plain productivity Mate desktop.  Over the years I have noticed LMDE being...
