Re: Now I am stuck

Now I just need to figure out what I can do to make things run a little smoother and faster. We both know about how bad this machine is. Might there be significant improvement with xfce 32 bit? or at this point do I just have to put up with it? It is what it is, I just need to explore my options.

[SOLVED] Re: Now I am stuck

I just found something in Bios related to CSM that I had overlooked all along. I couldn't figure out how to change it but finally did. When I reinserted my USB stick it read it right off the bat. Here's hoping this new install will work. I again went into Gparted and erased all the partitions. :oops...

Re: Now I am stuck

I did everything that you suggested in the last post. I went out and got a new USB stick. I used the software that you told me to, to create usb stick. The machine booted up the first time after I installed MATE. :) When I shut it down and tried to restart  the machine it said Reboot and Selec...

Re: Now I am stuck

On the install, I just chose to erase the disc and install. It never asked me where to point the boot. To create the USB drive I used this. http://www.linuxliveusb.com/ It will only boot up a live session. And Yes, I did accept the default installation. There is no DVD in my drive at all. I am unabl...

Re: Now I am stuck

I worked all last night to no avail. I made a USB stick of 64 bit MATE, I installed it, I thought that it was going to work but once I shut the computer down it will not reboot. My computer says : Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in the selected device press a key. I also up...

Re: Now I am stuck

You've never told us if you used a 32 or 64 bit version of Mint. I'm assuming you bought the computer with the windows 8 on it which means it would have been 64 bit install on a GPT partitioned scheme drive. When you installed, did you point the installation to the device sda instead of sda1 for wh...

Re: Now I am stuck

I ran the install with all the defaults. It will not start up without the USB key in the drive and it still goes to the 'Live' session not to my installation.

Did you create the partition table as I've asked you to do? and then recreate the partition?
Windows is gone but there shouldn't be 7.5 GB used?

Yes that is what I did, I have 7.5 GB used.

Re: Now I am stuck

I apologize for being very technology challenged these days. I am 63 years old and have forgotten most everything that I knew about comuters. What I mean by live version is what I am in at the moment. I used LinuxLive USB creator and I made a USB stick with Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon. I can boot from th...

Re: Now I am stuck

I went into BIOS and tried to disable UEFI. It would not let me. I assume that is on the same page as SECURE BOOT. Anyway I could not highlight anything other than SECURE BOOT and the item underneath it. I wanted Linux to hopefully speed up this computer. I really dislike it but I needed a computer ...

Re: Now I am stuck

I'm not so much worried about the HP printer as I managed to get a test page printed out. But I cannot seem to boot the installation of Mint or Ubuntu (no longer on my machine. I reinstalled Mint). When I hit F-12 to get the boot device I still get Windows Boot Manager and on the second line UEFI: S...

Now I am stuck

Well, depending upon who you ask whether this is a good thing or not. I am now stuck with Linux, no way to go back to windows. Restore partition is gone. Ok, I have installed Linux Mint (latest version, cinnamon) with a jump drive created with LinuxLive usb creator. Problem is that I can't boot linu...

Re: Will Mint speed up my computer

I haven't been on line in a while and decided to revisit this. No matter what I try, I cannot get anything other than Fedora to boot and I can't even install it because it doesn't see available space on my hard drives. So here I am, back to Mint what I always liked before. Anyway, this machine is su...

Re: Will Mint speed up my computer

I disabled all of that stuff and I still can't get any flavor of Linux to boot except Fedora, but when I go to install it, it won't recognize the necessary space on my hard discs. I figure if I can get Fedora installed I might be able to switch to Mint somehow,.

Re: Will Mint speed up my computer

Computer came with windows 8. It is a Gateway SX2185-UB37, AMD E1-2500 APU with Radeon HD 8240 graphics. I can't get anywhere even being able to look at Mint much less attempt to configure it.
