To completely remove every trace of nasty MATE from Linux Mint 13 Maya RC issue this command at terminal:

$ sudo apt-get purge $(dpkg -l|grep mate|cut -d " " -f3)

Cinnamon rulez!

While I'm running KDE/Dwm these days, I would love to see Cinnamon mature to install it on my Arch box

Since this is a specific KDE SC-related post you should try posting it in KDE SC forums as is sure you will get a lot of aid there in a snap ;)

Never stumbled-by this error but it seems a repo update isn't complete. On Debian-based distros you can try this to resolve packages problems (allways as r00t):
# dpkg --configure -a
# apt-get install -f
# apt-get update

(optional)
# apt-get upgrade
