Re: Linux on old laptop?
Personally I think Puppy and slitaZ work better otb than most other distros...puppy even includes two versions with every release...one more suited to old hardware and one for newer hardware. bohdi is good, but from my experience cannot detect if hardware is laptop or desktop on install and needs mo...

Re: Kernel vulnerability (LM 12 versions)
Ubuntu has recently updated all their kernels through the update manager so it might be a good idea

Plenty of instructions available in both these and ubuntu forums. And if you do choose to install new kernel, you retain the option of booting from the old one in Grub Menu

Re: TOR - running or not
I also use Privoxy, I like the option to turn TOR on and off easily in Firefox. I do occasionally use TOR desktop wide, but only rarely. There are some excellent proxy services out there, and easily set up, but they are all pay services. I find I do not have such a need for proxies that paying for o...

Re: Clam Antivirus
If you do wish to install it there should be a read me file within the download files containing instruction on how to install...just make sure you choose the Debian package not rpm. But like the others have said, anti-virus is not needed for a Linux OS as long as you have a firewall up, and probabl...

Re: Dual install with additional FAT32 data partition - how?
DEFINATELY back up and create a recovery disk of XP if you have not done so. You can then manually shrink the XP partition using a number of partitioning programs available for windows(Google is friend). Then, through the Mint installer, you can create the partitions you want. I would put the Linux ...

Re: Ubuntu 12.04
So I installed in my open HD space...aside from the install manually glitch, easily solved by booting into desktop first, it seems relatively stable, aside from refusing to recognize my Intel Integrated graphics keeping me in 2D at the moment. Of course it needs a lot of work...many packages I have ...

Try the Ubuntu forums...haven't even registered there myself, but since I am installing 12.04 on my system, however temporary or not, I will be registering over there.

Re: Ubuntu 12.04
I have tried 11.10, and while I personally did not like it, I installed it on a laptop I refurbished and sold to a friend...she absolutely LOVES it. Great thing about linux is the choice. I will def. try out 12.04 when it is released stable, and even offer to upgrade my friends comp when it is out. ...

Re: Linux Mint E17
Bodhi is a very nice distro using E17...I run it on a older desktop that has gig of ram and Athalon Dual Core...out of the box install, runs superquick, and it beautiful. All I had to do was install LibreOffice, and Firefox. I install it on friends older machines to save them money...run Linux inste...

I'm also using cairo-dock, though I believe it eats up a greater percentage of system resources than the others. I like the high level of custimization and the "eye candy".

Panel instabililty--applet icons randomly switching location
It appears that as time goes on the panel is becoming instable..in the last day, I have had panel icons randomly switching from right side to left, another update manager icons randomly appeared on the right side of the panel(had one on the left..and it is still there) so I have two update manager i...

Re: Why bother with Mint 12?
As a new Linux user myself, I have to say I am glad I chose Mint 12 to start off. The experience I am gaining by using this release, and Cinnamon(which I really like) is invaluable. Just think, even though I don't have much to contribute at this time, I and other noobs like me have joined in what I ...
