Re: [SOLVED] Help with permissions for new /data partition
Yeah, Fred, that is what I was meaning about any suggestions. I found that the code I pasted above as a solution shared by one of the Debian guys over in that forum. I had originally set up one Debian Lenny machine with a /swap, /root, and a /data partition, but then could not do anything with that ...

Re: [SOLVED] Help with permissions for new /data partition
I have used the following with success. I am going to use your forum name in the example:
It is simple enough for me, and I have not had any problems in using the above method (as yet). I am always open to suggestions for improvements.
Code: Select all
sudo chown enchance.users /data

One short page I have found handy is The Linux Alternative Project:
http://www.linuxalt.com/
You can match up proprietary applications with their free and open source equivalents. I have seen even longer lists, so you might find one of those in your continued research.

Re: Midori Web Browser
Midori 0.1.9 in Ubuntu 9.10 always crashed with me when trying to go to the home page, and 50% with Speed Dial. Midori 0.2.1 in Mandriva 2010 did not crash at all. So, yeah, I can confirm that much. I would seriously consider Midori for the default browser in the Fluxbox edition. Not that Firefox is...

Re: Installation problem Linux Mint 8 x64
I have experienced a few hardware issues with one of my machines having some kind of allergic reaction to Mint 7 and 8 (as well as Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10) even with compatibility mode. This is not my first rodeo with Linux, and I did try every trick I could find. I was frustrated, but Debian Lenny loa...

Re: Panel (Task Bar)
Perhaps you have deleted your Notification Area. To verify, choose the spot where you want your notifications, right-click on the panel, choose Add to Panel, and then add the Notification Area. I would try that first. Good luck.

Re: is there an attention getting "BUZZ" for Pidgin?
If I remember correctly, Kopete in KDE 3.5.x has/had this feature. I have not used any KDE versions lately, but you may wish to verify for yourself.

Re: Mint Or PCLOS
Narrowing down the choices between PCLinuxOS and Linux Mint, I would have to say Mint. You and your hardware will have to eventually come to an agreement between yourselves as to which one runs best. Either way, you are in for an excellent experience.

Re: Mint Or PCLOS
The Debian Live CD is basically for testing or to have a quick environment from which to work. CD #1 will install a basic and functional GNOME desktop. From there, you can install any extras you may need. DVD #1 will install a more robust GNOME desktop, as well as give you the option of KDE, Xfce, o...

Re: Mint Or PCLOS
Welcome to the Linux Mint forum, by the way. I use Linux Mint, PCLinuxOS, Debian, and Mandriva on my machines. Each has strong and weak points depending on the hardware upon which you choose to install. If at all possible, download some Live CDs and take them for a test drive. Spend a couple of hour...

Re: LiveCD Installation Problems With Low-End PC
Welcome to the forum, FiveAlive. I have gotten Mint to install and run on machines with a slightly slower processor than yours. I found out that the trick when having only 256 MB of RAM was to create partitions and add a /swap file in advance. You can use a gParted CD, but I have been using a Linux ...

Re: Feature request! Workspace identification
T J, I believe pluraldave has noticed you may not have the Workspace Switcher in your panel. I should have started back at square one, since I assumed you already had this. Sorry. I do not use Compiz, so I was basing my advice on a standard GNOME desktop. My suggestions will work if you already have...

Re: Ubuntu 9.04 looks nice
OK, I may as well chime in with my two cents... I first started with Mint 3 Cassandra. I have never had any problems until Mint 6. On my hardware with Mint 6, the 64-bit version performs flawlessly, although the 32-bit version required "compatibility mode" to load the Live CD. Over the wee...

Re: Feature request! Workspace identification
I believe you can do what you want with the workspaces right now. See if this works for you on your end: Right-click in the Workspace Switcher. Left-click on Preferences. See where the "Workspace names" are? Try deleting everything but the number for each workspace, and then put a check in...

Re: Using KDE software under Gnome
There usually is no problem with mixing GNOME and KDE applications. In fact, Linux Mint GNOME used to have Amarok as the default music player. Chances are, you should be fine with installing the programs you need.

Have you looked at the offerings from System 76 yet? http://www.system76.com/
When I need another unit, I am seriously giving System 76 consideration.

Re: wron intallation
Since you have just started, you may want to run the Live CD again and perform a clean install. You can use the partition editor from the menu with the Live CD running to make your partitions the way you want them. Then, when you run the installer, the partitions are already established. That would ...

Re: Which edition to go for?
With your hardware specs, you can choose either edition. Though, I think you might be better served with the 64-bit version of Mint. Test everything with the Live CD first just to verify. Have fun.
