Re: Firefox - Changing Hidden Mozilla Folder Name

Hi, Questions1010. No need to relink any Firefox executable in order to instruct Firefox to use a different directory instead of .mozilla. Check out the firefox commandline options. The solution is there. :) Did exactly this while running the normal release version which comes from the official soft...

Re: window tearing on intel machine with intel microcode

Hello, Arashka. On Ubuntu 18.04 Mate, I have got rid of display problems by switching the windows manager from Marco (Compositing) to Marco (Compton) in the Mate Tweak tool. Not only did this resolve the display problems, which I had experienced in particular when using Firefox with hardware acceler...

Re: Laptop Dell Latitude doesn't recognize Ethernet Adapter Linux Mint 18.3

@jsal01 I don't think karlchen saw all of the pics from the link you provided, just the first one of inxi -Fxz I admit that you are correct. I had missed the Bios photographs. A screen size of 1024x600 only (Acer netbook) does have its downsides. Now that I have seen it, I can tell: t...

Re: Laptop Dell Latitude doesn't recognize Ethernet Adapter Linux Mint 18.3

Hi, jsal01. As you took the photograph of "inxi -Fxz" while you used a Mint live system, the inxi photograph does hold a new piece of information, contrary to what I had said in my previous post. The inxi report does not list an ethernet adapter. Means that the live system does not see the adapter, ...

Hello, jsal01. You had already posted your "inxi -Fxz" report as pure text and nicely readable in a post above. :) Posting the same inxi report as a photograph https://imgur.com/gallery/jTYvCcO does not add any new piece of information. In particular, it does not tell whether you did as JerryF had s...

Maybe---check if the Ethernet adapter is enabled in BIOS.
Oops, yes, of course. - Has never occurred to me to switch off my ethernet card, because my notebook is firmly seated in its docking station while I am firmly seated in my office chair all day long.

Re: sudo vs. gksudo

Flemur, on Ubuntu 18.04 / Mint 19, the terminal commands are still invoked with root permissions by prefixing sudo . Hence your rm commandline will still be sudo rm a . Only the graphical applications now make use of pkexec (policykit) more consistently than they did in the past. Though, in case you...

Correct and weird, no ethernet adapter listed, only the wifi adapter. Re: sudo vs. gksudo

Hello, GS3. Linux Mint and Windows are different operating systems. They sometimes use different approaches to accomplish the same task. Windows has got its UAC dialogue. Linux Mint still has sudo/gksudo. This is true up to and including Mint 18.3. The rule when to use sudo and when to use gksudo is...

Re: How to install sort plugin in xed?

Hi, rebelxt.

Have you inspected the list of available xed plugins inside xed? If I remember correctly the "sort" plugin is present, but not enabled by default. If my memory serves me right, then enabling it inside xed would be sufficient.

Karl

Re: upgrade and dist-upgrade caused terminal to stop working and Wifi to drop

<side issue> never use apt-get upgrade or apt-get dist-upgrade in Mint. [...] You'll end up pulling in things at some point from the Ubuntu repos that shouldn't be on a Mint system. You have posted this statement on several occasions. Yet, the fact is that this statement is simply not correct. Plea...

The same issue has been discussed before. I just will have to look up the old threads ... (no time to do so at the moment) ... Re: Security Breach! - Home directories readable to other users

Guys, the issue is not caused by group membership, but by the default permissions which are granted to owner-group-others inside the /home directory. A simple ls -al /home might help reveal whether I am right. (Yes, you can do the same check in your graphical file-manager as well, provided you have ...

Hello, teosebastian. I am afraid, but I have the next disappointing piece of news. On dual boot systems like yours (and mine), where there is Windows and a Linux system, the Linux installer is not smart enough to suggest replacing the existing Linux system by a newer Linux Mint system. You will have...
