Re: sudo: unable to resolve host charlie-ThinkPa

Hi, WharfRat.

How did you know that
a) we are on Mint 18.x, not 19.x?
b) that gksudo would work where sudo fails?

Cheers,
Karl

Re: sudo: unable to resolve host charlie-ThinkPa

gksudo xed /etc/hosts should work. Only if the Mint version is 18.x. On 19.x gksudo no longer exists. sudo fails, pkexec fails, why should gksudo not fail? I think we should give recovery mode -> root shell a try, because we will have the root privileges, which we need. Editor nano will be availabl...

Re: Linux Mint starts/boots very slowly

Even if Mate should really be faster than Cinnamon, all the delays seem to occur during startup phases, when the OS does not know, yet, which desktop environment it is going to launch. Cf. above

Re: Need to make room in my root folder

Hi, guys. It would have been smart to mention at the beginning of this new thread that the problem started here: [SOLVED] Cannot login anymore to Mint 19.1 In that thread some cleaning up had already been done. But it was only sufficient to permit logging in again. The root cause seems to be a USB-C...

Re: Linux Mint starts/boots very slowly

Hi, Anna. Just to be quite sure that my understanding of the given timespans during startup is correct: This happens before the Grub menu appears: 6 seconds black screen 17 seconds "Press F2" screen This is the Grub menu, displaying and closing automatically 2 seconds boot menu This is the time betw...

Re: Linux Mint starts/boots very slowly

Hello, Anna. I guess I have got a hypothesis why booting Linux Mint from the SSD is as slow as it is. Your machine has got an old BIOS from 2010. This BIOS seems to support SSD devices. Else the machine would not boot from the SSD at all. Yet, it is not totally unlikely that the old 2010 BIOS forces...

Re: Cannot upgrade to Mint 19.1

Hi, HAWR. What should be set to "unlimited" is the number of textlines, which the terminal buffer will keep in memory, as long as you do not close the terminal window. The reason for instructing to set the buffer size to "unlimited" is that during the mintupgrade process a very large number of outpu...

Re: NEMO deletes without asking

Three months later, I would like to share a piece of information by smurphos in a thread about the same topic : It's already been requested and added for Nemo next version... https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/pull/2020 Don't see the point personally for a confirmation for the inherently non permanen...

Re: Linux Mint starts/boots very slowly

Hi, Anna

Thanks for mentioning that it is possible to put an SSD into the old EasyNote LJ75. Had never occurred to me.

Cheers,

Re: Different startups?

Mint 17.3, based on Ubuntu 14.04, still used upstart at boot time in order to startup kernel and userspace. Starting with Mint 18.x, based on Ubuntu 16.04, upstart has been replaced by systemd. I.e. Mint 19.x, based on Ubuntu 18.04, also uses systemd. So trying to compare Mint 17.3 and Mint 19.1 dir...

Hi, smurphos.

Thanks for providing the new Github issue address and number:
https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/issues/2020
https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/pull/2020
The old issue, which I had found in a thread, https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/issues/1135, had been closed by now.

Re: Installing program under WIne

Hi, pantr. Congratulations on solving the issues caused by having Wine 4.0.1 for xenial, instead of Wine.4.0.1 for bionic. :D Too bad that the Windows setup programme still does not work under Wine 4.0.1 for bionic. :( It is a known fact, however, that at no point in its history, Wine has been able ...

Hello, Anna. I assume I ...

Re: Linux Mint starts/boots very slowly

Hello, Anna. Although it had been mentioned before, let me repeat so: The following 2 steps happen before the Bios startup hands over control to Grub on the harddisk. 6 seconds black screen, 17 seconds "Press F2" screen, There is nothing which you could do in Linux Mint, which will speed up the thin...

Hi, cmtuck.

Could you, please, try
pkexec xed /etc/hostname
pkexec xed /etc/hosts
instead.

Regards,

Re: sudo: unable to resolve host charlie-ThinkPa

Hello, cmtuck. As can be seen the file /etc/hostname defines your hostname as charlie-ThinkPa . In the file /etc/hosts line 2, however, the hostname is given as charlie-ThinkPad-SL500.home . Quite obviously, the 2 names are not identical. I wonder a bit where the suffixed pseudo domain .home comes f...
