Re: default kernel version on Linux Mint 18.2 Mate (Beta)

michael louwe, is it so hard to understand that Canonical/Ubuntu have decided that ⋅ on Ubuntu 14.04 their kernel 3.13.0 will be maintained for 5 years by them and that kernel 3.13.0 is a long-term kernel on Ubuntu 14.04? They apply all necessary bugfixes and security fixes for full 5 year...

Re: How to change my kernel

Hello, Michael82. The kernel series 4.8.0-xx is a higher version than the default kernel series on Mint 18.x, kernel series 4.4.0-xx. Grub will always try to put the highest kernel number on top of the list and use it as the default kernel to boot, unless the user enters the Grub menu during startup...

Re: default kernel version on Linux Mint 18.2 Mate (Beta)

Hello, Michael Louwe. Linux Mint 17.x and 18.x are based on Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 respectively. Hence the kernel support times defined by Ubuntu for their LTS releases apply. So do the kernel version strings which Ubuntu uses. Please, have a look here: 14.04.x Ubuntu Kernel Support The graph clearl...

Re: Remote desktop

Hello, chameau.

In order to connect from Linux Mint/Ubuntu (client side) to Windows servers (server side), I have been using Remmina for the past years, because Remmina works best for me. Remmina is available from the official software repositories.

Re: Locked file

Hello, LamphunLumyai. Checking with lsof is the general correct approach. In this specific case of freshclam , however, you can be almost sure that it is another freshclam instance which is already trying to do the update that keeps the file locked. Check the process list for instances of freshclam....

Re: default kernel version on Linux Mint 18.2 Mate (Beta)

Only certain Linux kernels have LTS or long term security support of a few years. Eg LM 17.3's default kernel 3.19 is no longer supported = need to downgrade to 3.16 for LTS. Please refer to ... https://www.kernel.org/category/releases.html Note: kernel series 3.19.0 and 3.16.0 were both short term...

Re: Kernel panic - NOT syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Just found out that you had already opened a thread reporting the problem end of 2016: System Update Crash
That thread had only 1 reply and no follow up from your side.

Old and new threads will be merged.

Re: No startup music on 18.1

Hello, riki. The answer to your question depends on the desktop environment which you use on Mint 18.1. I.e. are you using Mint 18.1 Cinnamon / Mate / xfce or KDE? In order to let us know, you could execute the terminal command inxi -Sx and post the screen output which this command displays. Regards...

Re: Command line needed

Hi, Pjotr.

It is pretty unreliable to try and guess the rule for what "some parts of the current names" may be, if only 1 example has been given. You agree?
You should give us a few more examples which permit to deduce the renaming rule from them.

Karl

Re: A Question About rm -rf (Don't use -rf, unless it is required)

Hello, FFFFx. A serious warning about the command rm -rf in advance: Be extremely careful when using rm -rf . The option -r makes rm try to delete recursively in sub-directories as well. This may not be what you intend to do. The option -f makes rm try to delete forcefully without asking for any con...
