Execute this commandline: sudo dpkg --configure -a Note: sudo will prompt you to enter your password. While you type the password there will be no visual feedback, no *** will be di...

Re: Linux mint 18.3 terminal problem(हिन्दी)

Hello, Umesh. As I do not read Hindi at all, I may not be the best person to offer help on making a terminal window display Hindi characters correctly. But maybe achieving your goal is as simple as installing the konsole X terminal emulator. Cf. here, please: The terminal does not display Devanagri ...

Re: Kernel upgrade from 4.4.0-119 to 4.4.0-121 => grub prompt

Hello, littlehuman. Kernel 4.4.0-121(145) has just been installed here. The automatic "update-grub" operation has been executed at the end of the kernel installation, as designed. The system has been rebooted. The Grub menu here holds all installed kernel entries, 4.4.0-121 on top of the list and th...

Re: Can anyone recommend software for removing metadata?

I assume the question is related to this previous thread: MAT (Metadata Anonymisation Toolkit) installs but fails to launch: Is it broken? MAT 0.6.1-2 is available in the Ubuntu 16.04 software repository e.g. Yet the other thread suggested that the package may be broken in terms of dependencies. Met...

Re: Password

If I enter the wrong password say 10 or 20 times without success, will the system lock me out permanently? I am pretty sure that I can get it given enough attempts. There is a way of instructing Ubuntu/Mint to limit failed login attempts to a given number and to lock the account for a given period ...

BTW, 'Yarn' is not in Linux Mint Software Manager , nor is it available. in Synaptic .
Not really amazing that Synaptic and Software Manager agree: they both query the same software repositories. So it would be more amazing if they disagreed.

Re: Cannot elevate to root in GUI/desktop

Hello, jelabarre59. I just checked here on my Ubuntu 16.04.4. The application menu item "GParted" launches the command gparted-pkexec . I.e. the user id switch to root is not done by gksudo, but by pkexec. What you could try in order to find out whether it is this pkexec which causes the problem to ...

Hello, kaosports.

Welcome to the Linux Mint forum. :)
You will have to explain in more detail what the symptoms of your shutdown problems are. Else no-one will be able to give any helpful answers.

Re: VBoxClient notification , but virtualbox uninstalled

Hello, gg22M.

This might point to the files which will be read by /bin/bash, not matter which terminal application you use. Inspect the content of the file
+ $HOME/.bashrc, provided it exists.
+ $HOME/.bash_profile, provided it exists.

Re: xubuntu desktop installation error

The sentence from the forum rule which Moem might have quoted is this one: Do not resurrect support topics older than 6 months, outdated information can cause issues with newer releases. Yet, in this particular case, no outdated information is involved. So the quoted rule does not really apply to th...

Hi, JBrock. Not quite sure why a thread had to be resurrected which had been resting in peace for 2 years. Anyway. We all know Ubuntu and Linux Mint are closely related, because Linux Mint 17.x and 18.x are based on Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 respectively. As a consequence Xubuntu and Linux Mint xfce ar...

No. You are absolutely free to decide not to do so.
To cling to Total Commander running on Wine under Linux Mint and Ubuntu, this is my personal decision.

Hi, gg22LM.

In order to check the presence or absence of the virtualbox-guest softwware packages you have to query for the presence of the 3 packages
virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-guest-x11.

Code: Select all

dpkg --list virtualbox-guest-*

Re: Midnight Commander closes immediately after start in Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia (KDE) via desktop menu

Hi, tekord.

So far I have not found out a paramter which can be added to a .desktop file, which would create a logfile. Neither have I found a way of manually launching a .desktop file and make this commandline create a logfile.

Re: Installation of Total Commander in Wine

Hello, mint1248. The environment variable %COMMANDER_PATH% is only available inside the running Total Commander instance. It will expand to the fully qualified pathname (in Windows notation) of the Total Commander programme folder. You can e.g. enter cd %COMMANDER_PATH% in the T.C. commandline in or...
