Not really amazing that Synaptic and Software Manager agree: they both query the same software repositories. So it would be more amazing if they disagreed.

Re: OpenSource Intel-microcode - is it safe?
Hello, AZgl1500 I have already accepted the two updates since the scare a few weeks ago, why this one now Answer: First micrcode update in January against Spectre & Meltdown. - Turned out to be faulty. Intel withdrew it. Second update of microcode actually was a rollback to the July 2017 microcode. ...

Re: Cannot elevate to root in GUI/desktop
Hello, jelabarre59. I just checked here on my Ubuntu 16.04.4. The application menu item "GParted" launches the command gparted-pkexec . I.e. the user id switch to root is not done by gksudo, but by pkexec. What you could try in order to find out whether it is this pkexec which causes the problem to ...

Hello, kaosports.
Welcome to the Linux Mint forum.
You will have to explain in more detail what the symptoms of your shutdown problems are. Else no-one will be able to give any helpful answers.
Best regards,
Karl

Re: xubuntu desktop installation error
The sentence from the forum rule which Moem might have quoted is this one: Do not resurrect support topics older than 6 months, outdated information can cause issues with newer releases. Yet, in this particular case, no outdated information is involved. So the quoted rule does not really apply to th...

Re: xubuntu desktop installation error
Hi, JBrock. Not quite sure why a thread had to be resurrected which had been resting in peace for 2 years. Anyway. We all know Ubuntu and Linux Mint are closely related, because Linux Mint 17.x and 18.x are based on Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 respectively. As a consequence Xubuntu and Linux Mint xfce ar...

Hi, Bara-Bus. On which of the 2 operating systems did you create the password protected ZIP files(s)? On Windows or on Linux Mint? Which software did you use to create the ZIP-file(s)? Which software did you use when you tried to unzip file ZIP-file(s)? You are absolutely sure that you entered the r...

Re: Midnight Commander closes immediately after start in Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia (KDE) via desktop menu
Hi, tekord.
So far I have not found out a paramter which can be added to a .desktop file, which would create a logfile. Neither have I found a way of manually launching a .desktop file and make this commandline create a logfile.
Regards,
Karl

Hello, mint1248. You might like to read the Total Commander Wiki article on what all to backup when migrating your Total Commander configuration to a new system (Linux Mint with Wine in this case): Total Commander - configuration - What to backup Note: On the Linux side, you may have to go through y...

Re: Installation of Total Commander in Wine
Hello, mint1248. The environment variable %COMMANDER_PATH% is only available inside the running Total Commander instance. It will expand to the fully qualified pathname (in Windows notation) of the Total Commander programme folder. You can e.g. enter cd %COMMANDER_PATH% in the T.C. commandline in or...

Re: Installation of Total Commander in Wine
Hi, trytip. why would you use total commander/wine when there are other commanders made the same way for linux. To state quite bluntly: None of the genuine Linux two-panel file-managers offer all of the features, which can be found in Total Commander. Not even Krusader comes near Total Commander. (N...

Re: Installation of Total Commander in Wine
Hello, mint1248. I wonder how to make it "registered" in Linux Mint - so I can use my settings... Total Commander will save your settings, irrespective of your registration status. In order to make Total Commander display your license key and that it is a registered version, you proceed in exactly t...

Re: Midnight Commander closes immediately after start in Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia (KDE) via desktop menu
Hi, tekord. OK. There is the systemwide launcher file /usr/share/applications/mc.desktop . Is there by any chance also a user specific launcher file $HOME/.local/share/applications/mc.desktop ? In this case the user specific file would be used instead of the systemwide file for your account. A few d...

Re: Midnight Commander closes immediately after start in Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia (KDE) via desktop menu
Hello, tekord. The relevant lines in the file mc.desktop should be these : Exec=mc Icon=MidnightCommander Terminal=true Actually, the icon line is not important for launching it. This leaves Exec=mc and Terminal=true So what is tried is launching a terminal window and inside the terminal window exec...

Re: Midnight Commander closes immediately after start in Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia (KDE) via desktop menu
Hi, tekord. Hi, Moem. As far as I know, Midnight Commander is a terminal application, not a graphical application (comparable to the old Norton Commander on Windows). So using kdesudo in order to invoke Midnight Commander may not work correctly, because the MC configuration will be searched inside u...
