Re: A more appropriate Mint screen-shot

Hi, Vilsen. You told that you used the Mate desktop . Unless I remember incorrectly, by default, Mate brings along mate-screenshot . This should be the name of the executable behind the screenshot application. Therefore, the terminal command mate-screenshot --help should display the commandline opti...

Re: Graphics Driver Failure - nouveau?

Hello, bardfast. The trouble with the Nvidia driver might be that both are getting loaded: nvidia and nouveau. And even fbdev is loaded. This is a no-go. The terminal commands to uninstall nvidia and re-install nouveau have been posted in several forum threads in the course of time. Perhaps a forum ...

Re: Graphics Driver Failure - nouveau?

Hello, bardfast. Could you perhaps post a complete inxi -Fxz report as well? - Will as a side effect also tell us which inxi version created the report, because some of the older inxi versions tended to report incorrectly that nouveau or nvidia had failed, although that had not failed loading. Regar...

Re: How to change XFCE to KDE?

Hi,

as this is about Linux Mint 19, there is no way of installing Linux Mint 19 KDE directly from a live system, because there is no Linux Mint 19 KDE ISO image file. :(

Cheers,

Re: update output

Hello, shoio. All the warnings, which you posted, point to one single file: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list This sources list file holds one or more duplicated lines, i.e. lines having identical content. The software management system does not like duplicates. Please, open a ter...

Hello, Tony. Does inxi still tell this about the wifi interface? Card-2: Broadcom Limited BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller bus-ID: 06:02.0 IF: N/A state: N/A mac: N/A You can inspect the network cards using the terminal command inxi -Nnz This will only check the network int...

Re: Sudo is not known on line 1 in source list Help Please

Hello, Lunabelle. Note: The word sudo must occur in any software sources list file. sudo is a terminal command, which permits you to execute other commands with the privileges of user root . (comparable to "Run as administrator" on Windows.) Finding the offensive sources list file: Please, open a te...

Re: Slow boot after logging in, and so on

I still suspect that the long duration for the userpsace startup might be related to the 2 graphics drivers in use, modeseting for Intel and nvidia-390 for NVidia. I suggest checking the 2 logfiles /var/log/syslog /var/log/Xorg.0.log and checking for errors and delays. Delays can be found by paying ...

Re: Remove / Enable WiFi driver module every boot time

Removed the "[Solved]" from the title, because disabling and re-enabling the wifi card after each reboot is a workaround, not a solution.
Yet, as long as the thread is marked as "[solved]", other readers may not notice so.
(OK, thread bumped to top again. )

Re: Slow boot after logging in, and so on

Hello, Mornagest. I upgraded from 18.3 to 19 (Tara) this morning. Please, explain how precisely you executed the upgrade from Mint 18.3 to Mint 19. Did you boot your machine from the Mint 19 live system and did a clean installation of Mint 19, overwriting the previous OS? Did you do an in-place upgr...

Hi, Bob. I am glad to learn that switching from the proprietary nvidia-340 driver to the nouveau driver really solved your problem. :D I think other users, who experience a similar situation, might find this thread useful. So I do not see any reason to delete anything. It really is a tricky situatio...

Hello, avi8tor.

Please, execute the terminal command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Mark the complete screen output and paste it in your next reply. This will give us a concise overview on your hardware, including the network interfaces, which Mint sees.

Re: mint-screenshot autosave + no dialogue-box !

Hello, Vilsen. Which desktop environment do you use? Mate? xfce? KDE? I ask, because Cinnamon brings along gnome-screenshot. Its default behaviour is exactly as you want to have it. Your press <PrtScr>, and gnome-screenshot will capture the whole screen and write it to a .png image file in the direc...

Hello, Chris White. Please, post the screen output of the terminal command inxi -Fxz We need to see the technical details of your system in order to give any meaningful answer. I suspect the reason for the black screen, when booting a 4.15.0 kernel, might be the same as in this recent thread: Why so...

Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.

Hm. As I understand the old NVidia card will not like the new Nvidia driver nvidia-390, used on Mint 19. NVIDIA 390 does not support OP's GT 210 graphics card. He is stuck with the legacy 340 driver while using the GT 210. This might return us to the option of switching to the "nouveau" driver, prov...

Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.

According to Driver Manager I'm running the latest driver...nvidia-340.104-oubuntu 0.16.04.1 But, Bob, your problem is not the microcode. Your problem is, as JeremyB had pointed out, that kernel 4.15.0-xx does no longer support Nvidia driver nvidia-340. So, either you find a newer Nvidia driver, wh...

Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.

If you want to switch over to the HWE meta packages and not just the kernel you'll still have to run that command. Once you did that, Update Manager will then keep those packages up to date in the future. Last time when I had to switch to a newer kernel series on Mint, because my hardware was too n...

Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.

Hi, JeremyB.

This might explain Bob's problems. Indeed. In case nvidia-340 is not supported by kernel series 4.15.0, then every kernel 4.15.0-xx will look "bad" to Bob.
Glad I have switched to nouveau completely. :)
