Peculiarity installing LM18 in Vbox+EFI

I've never had issues installing LM in Virtualbox 5.1.34 in the default 'BIOS' mode on a virtual disk with a DOS partition table. I decided to familiarize myself with EFI installs, so I set up a VM in EFI mode with a GPT virtual disk. Installation proceeded with no issues, but upon reboot I got the ...

Keystrokes being dropped after suspend

Long time user of LM 18 - this very strange behavior surfaced within the last few months on my desktop installation. After resuming from Suspend, almost all applications will start dropping keystrokes. I can't correllate this behavior with any recently installed application, and BTW rkhunter doesn't...

Re: Community website / mintinstall issues

Just tried submitting a review to the Community from within mintinstall , still get the 'Invalid Username' message. It would be nice if someone would fit this. While they're at it, how about changing the Review input field from a line to a rectangle used since the dawn of 'dumb terminals'. Perhaps t...

Re: Wireless USB dongle not working

Just tested the Stretch RC4 iso and the "unofficial" one that contains "firmware for awkward hardware" . The latter ISO is here: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/ and it detected the dongle! The Debian web site is not very clear on what else is done to load...

Re: Wireless USB dongle not working

I did Not update 'Intel firmware' as this is an external USB, non-Intel device. One thing at a time .... After some futzing with conflicts (linux-base) I was able to get a 4.9 kernel installed. This also made no difference - the dongle is found by lsusb but apparently no driver is loaded. I'll have ...

Re: Wireless USB dongle not working

Does the Driver Manager show anything of interest? Not at all. :( It only shows some 'Intel firmware' as being available. Here on LMDE, we (usually) have to update our kernel to get a newer driver, since there's no Driver Manager. Let's try installing the 4.8 kernel from the Debian stable backports...

Wireless USB dongle not working <SOLVED>

I have a very commonly available Ralink MT7601U USB wireless dongle (ID 148f:7601). It does not appear in Network Manager for use under LMDE 2 or SolydX. The firmware-ralink package is installed; kernel version is 3.16 :-( and no newer kernels are available AFAIK. It IS recognized under LM 18 and Ub...

Re: Vitual Box AMD-V disabled error installing WinXP

Thanks for the reply. my system is AMD quad core x2, with 4x4gb Ram ...snip... It would help to know what vendor and model motherboard is used in your system, and perhaps someone has a similar system. Looking up the user manual (if available) might reveal some information, but in recent years some ...

Re: MintBox Mini Pro and Airtop Preview

if the buyer knows in advance that 120GB will be too small. I wouldn't worry about it too much. IMO if you are creating / storing critical data on a system I recommend adding a traditional 'rotating rust' HDD. Use the SSD for boot partitions. The failure modes of consumer grade SSDs are not well kn...

Re: Alternative to DVDfab <SOLVED>

@phd21 , Thank you for the info on the k9copy-reloaded PPA. I just installed it on LM 18 and it works. One annoying but not fatal error is the error string 'i18n argument missing' appears in chapter titles. Both k3b and k9copy will backup most commercial DVDs IF you have the libdvdcss2 package inst...

Clamtk not working

Periodically I use clamav to scan my Windows and shared data partitions from LM. I finally finished moving to LM 18 and found that No functions from the clamtk gui work! The UI just seems to lock up with no progress messages. The clamtk version is 5.20. BTW clamscan from the command line works just ...

Re: Any VOIP More Reliable Than Skype?

I don't like getting microwaved by talking on cell phones for over a few minutes at a time, that's why I like to use VOIP. Is there a user friendly application available that doesn't require hours of debugging or a degree in computer science to configure and use? If you're not averse to using the G...

Re: Suggestions please: MP3 tag editor?

And what do you guys use for ripping CDs? I use k3b for almost everything involving optical media. Note that you can add or remove task buttons to the bottom panel, just to make your experience that much nicer. One function that k3b doesn't have is DVD shrinking, useful for producing a single layer...

Re: It's a gift from God

Probably a Life Lesson in there some where. Lesson #2 (after #1 - Backup, Backup and Backup again) is Dual Boot! - Create another Linux boot partition using Gparted Live or the Mint install CD/USB. - Install the new O/S version in the 'alternate' partition. - If needed run 'update-grub'. Your Grub ...

Please post more details of your computer model and configuration. It is usually possible to replace laptop drives and RAM yourself through access panels (see YouTube). Desktop upgrades are rarely difficult. Some random thoughts: - Why move from a larger to a smaller drive? Is it for more speed or l...

Very odd Firefox 48 glitch

I rarely have problems with application updates in Linux Mint, but I can't find any reason for this one. My 32 bit laptop has been running Mint 18 Xfce with my usual FF prefs and extensions since 'day two'. I run mintupdate about every other day manually with no issues so far. Upon launching it yest...

Extremely biased tagger here :D .

After slogging through many apps, I prefer kid3-qt for my purposes. It has a straightforward interface, but I honestly haven't tried it for bulk changes yet.

Community website / mintinstall issues

After encountering some issues with my Mint 18 Xfce install, I decided to post some reviews from the Software Manager (mintinstall). - First issue, it kept telling me I had a 'Invalid Username'. Login with the same username & pw directly to the community website was successful. - Second issue, attem...
