Clean install won't update

I just did a clean install of LMDE 201403 but it won't update. It fails with the following: W: Failed to fetch http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/dists/testing/InRelease W: Failed to fetch http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security/dists/testing/updates/InRelease W: Failed to fetch http://debian.li...

Re: Mint 16 boot time

I don't understand how people can have a boot time of 7 seconds. But at least I fixed my 20 seconds delay. Turned out to be some compatibility issue with legacy boot mode on an UEFI system. Boot time is still ~20 seconds from grub to the actual GUI login screen which I think is acceptable. I have a ...

Re: Mint 16 boot time

Thanks guys, appreciate the help.

I'm going to give it some thought and see where I want to go with this. To be honest I'm not sure I want to go through so much trouble.

Re: Mint 16 boot time

What is sdc on PC2? It seems to have totally confused bootinfoscript. It might be confusing Grub. Perhaps disconnect sdc temporarily? Also, check the smart data on sdb where Grub's MBR code is installed. Try installing Grub to sda instead and tell the BIOS to boot sda. EDIT: Sorry, sdb is your 128G...

Re: Mint 16 boot time

My Mint16 system uses LVM and it takes 7 seconds between choosing the Grub menu entry and the login prompt. The 21 second delay sounds like Grub having problems finding or loading the initial filesystem. 7 seconds? Even my Debian barebones netinstall takes longer than that. How did you manage that?...

Re: Mint 16 boot time

A typical user probably wouldn't even notice the difference so let's not dwell on this shall we? I apologize for bringing it up. You obviously are aware of it and have it taken care of. And the typical user would not notice any difference at all right up until the point where he drops his SS...

Re: Mint 16 boot time

I made the partitions manually before I installed using fdisk utility on the Linux rescuecd. It automatically aligns partitions properly, so all partitions are aligned. But really guys, that is not the issue. 22 seconds delay and then it boots fast ... does that sound like an alignment issue? If any...

Re: Mint 16 boot time

I'm beginning to suspect there might be something in grub.cfg or something with initramfs, but I'm not exactly an expert on those.

My grub.cfg can be found here.

Re: Mint 16 boot time

Thanks. The 830 is several years old and has been running with several versions of Windows (7, 8), Debian (7, 8), Fedora (19, 20), recent versions of Mint and now finally Mint 16. It is not a performance issue though, I'm aware of partition allignment and I don't think this is the issue. It's simply...

Re: Mint 16 boot time

I just tried unplugging everything from the pc except 1 monitor and boot. I opened the case and unplugged the DVD and all other harddisks. I booted several dozen times trying different ports and switched a few cables. Sometimes it booted fast (happened twice). Each time it booted fast I just reboote...

Re: Mint 16 boot time

I would really appreciate some expert help here. I just finished backing up, repartitioning and restoring my system, completely removed LVM and setup 4 primary partitions on sda: sda1 ext2 /boot sda2 ext4 /root sda3 ext4 /home sda4 swap sdb and sdc are now also single ext4 partitions without LVM. Bo...

Re: Mint 16 boot time

It must be the way i setup LVM, I just installed my HTPC with Mint 16 as well and it shows the same ~22s delay when booting.

Previously both machines ran Debian wheezy and jessie, neither of those machines had this delay at booting.

Re: Mint 16 boot time

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. I did a complete reinstall of Mint as the only OS on the system. I had some other issues as well and I wanted to make certain it isn't a combination of things. Your assessment was correct. Mints /boot was on an LVM volume. This time, boot is a separate partition...

Re: Mint 16 boot time

I disabled the logo and reverted the grub and boot to plain text. After the grub selection, I have a blinking cursor for 21 seconds in the upper left corner, with nothing happening. After that, I see some text flying by and I can login. What is that 21 seconds delay? How can I find this out? Its dou...

[solved] Mint 16 boot time

Hey folks, Booting takes a full 45 seconds from grub selection to login screen, on an i7 with Samsung 830 SSD. My 10 year old laptop boots faster than that :? . Dmesg with timestamps can be found here: http://pastebin.com/8Bu4E9z0 I think most of the delay is before that though; it takes like 24 sec...

Re: nobody 4294967294 as owner on nfs mounted shares?

THanks for the tips bob. I'm not using windows, everything is Linux, either Debian Wheezy or Mint 16. UID and GUID are synced and setting/taking ownership should work over NFS shares. With Debian as client this works as expected, with Mint 16 this doesn't work as everything is squashed to nobody:nob...

Re: nobody 4294967294 as owner on nfs mounted shares?

No, client is Mint 16, server is Debian Wheezy. Thanks for the link but unless I misread that there's no solution offered?

Using IP doesn't change anything.

Thing is, when reboot my client back to Debian, it works fine. The issue arises with Mint 16 as a client.
