Firewall and root password

Thanks. For the future, I think it's quite important that the leadership takes on board the necessity to instate/re-instate, by default, a good bi-directional firewall, hardening (perhaps apparmor with some sensible profiles that do enough without getting in the way), better system monitors & intrus...

Re: insecure

yes Please take a look at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=148021 .. for some unexplained reason, the out of the box Mint has poor security (IMO), not even ufw (gufw) firewall, no password on root, let alone apparmor, and control of file-sharing seems obfuscated, also I get a "Cannot...

Re: Mouse cursor vanishes betimes - worse now mint 16

Thanks, HarzVieh I do believe, as you suggest, it is in fact a faulty usb socket (or whatever lies behind). syslog dmesg.0 was not particularly helpful. Re-plugging the mouse always cured the problem - cleaning the socket slightly lessened the frequency of failure - plugging to a different socket ha...

Mouse cursor vanishes betimes - worse now mint 16

For some time, I've noticed now and again the mouse cursor goes AWOL. (Vanishes) I shuffle the mouse about in hopes of noticing it; sometimes it comes back (probably in its own time, as if the machine has taken control away from me). This seems to happen less with the on-board laptop touchpad, but o...

Re: How to recover from a Frozen System

I see this is rather an old post, but I thought it might save some people puzzlement & angst if I add an update. Firstly NOTE: for 'magic keys', recent versions of Mint no longer use SysRq with Alt (left) , they use: SysRq with Alt (right) plus whatever (lower case) A while back, some joker decided ...

Re: Security and Privacy Forum

Thanks, FreedomOfTheOpenCode - useful but I think we need more in depth, more about why the common misconception that Linux is invulnerable is plain wrong, more simple tutorials, and some place for helping people who have a problem. {And maybe even some moral/political philosophy about freedoms & pr...

Months ago (Wed Nov 13, 2013 3:45) monkeyboy asked Post by monkeyboy on Wed Nov 13, 2013 3:45 pm Can someone please tell me a form of communication that governments haven't mined for information? Bottom line I never expect privacy on a public channel. A direct answer might be contemplative prayer ,...

Re: stop/kill iwlwifi please

Thanks, wavespot , that was close enough to follow through. This is to stop & get rid of iwlwifi in a mint 15 set-up using a wired eth0 connection, not needing wifi.. To /etc/modprobe.d./blacklist.conf I appended (by 'open as root', then edit & save) # no need for wifi, but see also /etc/modprobe.d....

stop/kill iwlwifi please

Looking through sys mon (the Firefox 25.0.1 is sadly more like fireslug at times ), I found iwlwifi sitting there. Now doing much, but since I don't use wifi I don't want it right now. However, it refuses requests to end, stop or be sudo pkilled or kill-15 or: mint@mint ~ $ sudo /bin/kill -9 2793 ; ...

Thanks, MishaSherpa. Completely agree! (You've seen my independent post http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=146357&p=777586 - apologies for missing this when I posted.) I am astounded that the standard Mint comes without AppArmor (easy) SELinux (not quite so easy) or any such...

Re: Magic SysRq REISUB reacts but does not work

It seems that someone (and their committee) thought is was a good idea to disable many of the useful things that one might use to recover from difficult situations. It's the same crass mindset that had someone else remove the ability to switch off JavaScript easily in current Firefox (24.0). So, fir...

Re: Forum search ignores important words

I completely agree with Emerson Prado - at times I have been very frustrated at being unable to find an answer here because of words "too common", or astoundingly just not returning results. Am I the only person that is surprised that there are zero results for "System Monitor" (system-monitor), whe...

new forum section? - security & admin

From time to time I have concerns about security in Mint; I feel it might be helpful if there were a section covering security concerns. I'm thinking about how to track down data leaks, how to monitor what is going on in the system, how to find out if one being misled by reporting programs, how to l...

Re: Can't set keyboard layout

Ah well, after going round in circles & finding a number of other things that don't work, I realised the answer was not to try to set languages (doesn't works), but to go to System Tools -> System Settings (the logo with the broken gear-train)-> under Preferences, "Regional settings" (the logo of a ...

Same problem, on Acer with English English keyboard (often described as UK), after attempting to set locale & lang to en-GB. Re: Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon - No Sound after Login

First install & update alsamixer if it's not there. You can use Admin>software manager. I have alsamixergui, alsa-utils, alsa-base installed. in terminal sudo alsamixer Which generally comes up as a coloured panel with Master selected use up-arrow to up the volume of the Master control. Now scroll a...

Re: open icons with single click in linux mint 12

An old post,I realise, but there's quite a lot wrong here, so this is for those that land here looking for the one-click solution. This applies to a KDE version of Mint 13 Maya (Now,January '13). I note that one can change to single-click behaviour in the file-manager Dolphin (only), but not as state...
